It was not a surprise that the young lady was killed, but how long it took for her body to be found. For her to be placed under the front stairs was shocking! I hope the police who didn't want to help the aunt of this young lady were punished for their actions. What a story!!

To me it sounded as if they never really kidnapped anyone, without they simply lured their victims somewhere, killed them, and then in various ways tried to get as much money out of what they'd done as possible. Can't imagine how frustrating it must've been for De Koven's poor relatives to have to go back home to the USA, with the knowledge that the police refused to take their concerns seriously.

It is so easy to become a victim to people who befriend you in a strange city. I went to Paris by myself because my boyfriend wanted to visit somewhere he felt was too dangerous for me to come with him. I was approached by a lot of men who wanted to take me on an exciting drive through the Bois de Boulogne. I looked kind of scruffy, so men would actually wave money at me and gesture for me to come to them. Really scary experiences, but to balance it out I got to see paintings I'd only read about up close. They were huge and the Mona Lisa was tiny. I always thought I'd cry when I saw Ingres' the Bathers of Valpincon but instead I started crying in front of The Raft of the Medusa. And I hate Delacroix. But the next foreign trip I take I think I'll sign up for a group trip!
@haplessasshole9615
@haplessasshole9615 Жыл бұрын
Some pictures have a visceral impact whether we "like" them or not -- whatever "like" means to any given viewer. The Baroque is a favorite period of mine for art and music, and I think of the Romantics, especially Delacroix, as Baroque with more angst and a cast of thousands. When you cried over "The Raft of the Medusa," Delacroix was somewhere hugging himself with delight. The Romantics were all about evoking emotional responses to the sublime. The picture succeeded in its aim, even with a viewer who was predisposed to resist it. There's a lesson there, but I'll be danged if I know exactly what it is. I'd recommend against a group trip unless you're simply interested in seeing lots of things, and less interested in spending time experiencing them.

Great work Brief Case! It's officially Monday! That is so tragic. WHY do police think that every young woman/girl has just run away for attention? This still happens today! I'm not surprised that poor Jean De Koven was taken in by "Siegfried". He looked a lot like an up and coming Hollywood actor of the time, a young Englishman by the name of George Sanders. As for their other victims, a nice educated tone and manner has taken many a person in. But why they felt the need to kill them as well is beyond me. Many a successful conman and thief blended seamlessly away after their crimes. And as for their murdered compatriot, they were probably right. It is one thing to flee your country with next to nothing, to avoid political persecution, robbing those who you feel can afford to lose some money. It is quite another to murder people. I am glad that there was one positive outcome from that string of horrible events. No more public executions.

I think public executions need to be brought back. People have NO SHAME. These people didn't sit there and babysit and pay for serial killers to eat, drink, have a "home", medical coverage, etc. All paid for by taxes. Sorry, not sorry. Do the crime. You know the penalty! You think they didn't know they faced death? It was no fuss, no muss. Took care of the problem. Rolled them right into a coffin and buried them. Done.

These crimes sound like the mean and cruel crimes that go on today. In fact, if I didn't know otherwise, these criminals and their dastardly intensions and deeds sound like the goings on in Oakland or San Francisco, California, or any other high crime city. Jean De Koven was trusting and very pretty and was probably hoping the creep she met up with was a possible "Mr. Right", but he was quite the opposite. What a bastard.

The smarter/well educated the man the more suspicious you have to be of him 😔 the biggest red flag is not seeing any. It’s more common knowledge nowadays because of many historic cases like this to never meet up at private/secluded places with people you don’t know well. It’s awful how the police treated her family when they reported her missing, but I’m glad they at least eventually found her body along with all the other victims. Equally glad the perpetrators got fitting punishments!

As he started his criminal behavior so young, it seems he was just a "bad egg:" something wrong in his brain that made him unable to feel empathy or remorse. What he did to his accomplices only proves that running with a rabid dog is gamble with only one sure outcome. Also, I wonder how frequently ladies or gentlemen faked their kidnapping for publicity, such that the police felt it was an obvious conclusion in Mile De Koven's case. I mean, was it a huge trend, or were the police humiliated one or two times in the past, and so didn't want to repeat the experience?

In case anyone else is wondering, that $430 in traveler's checks in 1937 would be equivalent to $8,413.65 in April, 2022. That's some heavy-duty walkin'-around money.

Hi I have a couple of suggestions for videos. Mary Ann Cotton and Jane jameson. Mary Ann is believed to be England's first female serial killer and Jane was the last female to be hanged in newcastle. I know about these stories because they are both on my family tree and are quite interesting.

A couple points of interest. Weidmann's execution was filmed. I've seen it, it's available on KZbin. It's not too gruesome being filmed from the rear. I believe the crime or at least the killer was the inspiration for the 1950 film The Man on the Eiffel Tower starring Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone and Burgess Meredith shot mostly on location in Paris. The story in turn was based on a Georges Simenon / Inspector Maigret novel.
