Poor Lillie Johnson, here she is thinking that she is going to have a nice carriage ride with a friend just to have it escalate into witnessing a murder. Not necessarily, I was under the impression that they kept any correspondence from Alice from her, as well as forbidding Freda to correspond in return. This wouldn't be unexpected and wouldn't be difficult to manage.

I think they came across the reality of their situation at that time. Freda decided that there was no hope in continuing like they had, and changed her course for one that was possible in society's eyes. @@mystic_tacos I think something like a podcast would better fit his style. It would have been interesting to have known how Alice and Freda's relationship would have turned out if they would have ended up together. This was a sad and horrific story about a forbidden love and society's moral standpoints of the day, and mental health issues, as well. Great investigation work of this case.

You know, I'm going to guess it wouldn't have been great? The whole "if I can't have you noone can" thing really points to Alice likely being a controlling and abusive partner. Maybe she would have been a better person if society had been more accepting but also, maybe not. Certainly people whose relationships were accepted by society have done that sort of thing in the face of rejection before. My guess? Even with complete societal acceptance, this relationship would have ended in an ugly way.

No difference most probably. There are people nowdays (both straight and homosexual) that don't deal good with refusal or with someone breaking up with them. The problem was Freda refusing to be with her anymore, not the fact that the society didn't approve. It seems that Alice had no idea that Freda broke up due to her family's disapproval. Alice thought that Freda just didn't want to stay with her anymore and that was enough for her to kill Freda.

I'm not sure why Alice thought she needed to dress as a man if they lived in St. Louis. It wasn't at all unusual for two unmarried women to live together -- it was actually considered more respectable than a woman living on her own, since in theory they acted as chaperones for one another. There was even a term for it: Boston Marriage.

Merry Christmas to everyone! Another case of love gone wrong. It's not ok to kill someone because you can't have them! That's not real love. These two ladies didn't have much of a chance for their relationship to be a success. If you want to read about another couple of well known ladies that lived around the same time, look up Gertrude Stein and her friend Alice b. Toklas. They didn't kill anyone but they knew many of the famous artists of the time, had quite a fascinating life and beat the odds. There are quite a few books written about Gertrude Stein.

@Nicole Perron - I love Gertrude and Alice's relationship. Sadly, Gertrude's family ended up taking many of the items that Gertrude wanted Alice to have after her death, including many valuable paintings. Since they weren't allowed to legally marry, Alice didn't have much recourse to get the items back. She wrote a couple of books, but eventually died impoverished. At least she was buried next to Gertrude.

Alice killed that girl because her family shut down their communication. I’m sure that after Frieda’s sister discovered those letters, her family took swift action to cut the relationship off. Frieda was probably closely watched and monitored with everything being examined and scrutinized. Just because Alice’s mother didn’t seem concerned, it was very clear that Frieda’s family was the complete opposite. She probably never even got a chance to even set eyes on the last letter Alice sent to her. The fact Frieda wasn’t able to understand that the lack of communication was most likely not by Frieda’s choice, and chose to attack her besides say a family member withholding Frieda from her, really led me to believe that she was crazy. Or should I say, driven crazy by what I would call an obsession, not love 😳

She "stumbled" across the letters...or, she rooted through her sister's private belongings until she found them???
I remember watching this case on "Deadly Women" a few years back.

This was a simple case of jealousy and if I carnt have her nobody will she was not insane she knew what she was doing its a shame as they both could of gone there separate ways and lived a good life. I thought Alice's mother took the news of her daughter been a lesbian realy well for that time sad case all around but if you kill some one the results aren't going to be good great story love everyone of your stories come join brief case people you will enjoy the different but interesting stories. Merry Christmas and to all people who subscribe a merry Christmas to you all. 🇬🇧🎅🌲⛄♥️

I love listening to your narrations. Are you an Aussie (or Kiwi)? People can let go of the idea of "the good old days." They don't exist.

Fascinating story. I am a Memphis native and now live very close to Gold Dust. It's always interesting to hear of cases that happened in areas I am familiar with. Great narration as always.

I feel sorry for Alice. She was clearly unbalanced, and obsessively in love with Frieda. Having their love letters read out in court must have been so hard for her. Good morning, happy Solstice & happy Xmas, Brief Case! See you soon.

You know, I think you're the Edward Gorey of KZbin. I thoroughly enjoy your diligently researched presentations with the charmingly quirky narrative: "Mulva, as a child was prone to hyperventilation and heavy sweating. Not good at her studies she was mesmerized by fish. Her mother coddled her and fed her macaroons which caused her weight to balloon and made her a risible figure. In the spring of 1894, her father stumbled into a wood chipper which had a negative effect on the family's fortunes. They lived outdoors for several years which had an effect on Mulva". You strive to be respectful to victims and as understanding as possible of your fiends. I thoroughly enjoy the result. Happy Holidays.

You have a talent as well turning an ordinary, hard-luck story of knuckle-draggers into one of refined, breezy elegance with class and social distinction. You've turned the sow's ear into a silk purse.
