14:29 buffy was arguably the catalyst for most modern vampire media. without it, we wouldn’t have twilight, true blood, the vampire diaries, as well as many others. it popularized the concept of “love triangles” in supernatural tv and also introduced“slay” and other terms into modern lingo (it was the first piece of media to use the word“google” as a verb!) it’s my favourite tv show of all time. i think you’d really like it.

Hungarian historian here - most of the accusations against Elisabeth Báthory is most probably made up, the governor of Hungary was after her wealth and influence. She did not evade trial because of her wealth, but because the accusations would not have standed in front of a proper judge. She was actually a very formidable lady, who looked after her subjects, even founded a hospital on her estate.

It can also be from trying to place some sort of "feminine" (looks-focus) intention for her gruesome homicides. Seeing as (not trying to act like I'm a professional, this is MY understanding) violent crimes like this TEND to be done more by males, and females are usually driven by money, escape from abuse, or general violence against their children, and most females tend to use poison, while males are more prone to physical attack. I listened to another podcast about Báthory, and they made sure to mention that the myths, in addition to what you mentioned, were likely inspired to keep her feminine and "vain." Just my understanding, I could totally be wrong.

Fun fact from my teacher (im in massage therapy) - a person cannot drink blood and keep it down. Your body will throw it up because of the amount of iron. She also spoke about the disorder you brought up in the beginning, turns out people who are so low on iron can want blood, and they feel like they're a vampire. She said this could have been the start of the whole vamp thing forever ago. Idk how we got on this topic in class (we were learning about the urinary system) but i thought it was interesting lol

Vlad the impaler, Vlad "Tepes" Dracula was what his enemies called him. Romanians to this day idolize him. From what I have heard. There was a semi documentary movie about him. He reduced crime to basically zero, recaptured most his Romania which had been taken by the ottomans, the people were wealthier and happier thanks to corruption being stomped out and his one mistake was marrying protestant. The catholic church not only withdrew their support but possibly ended him for it. The portrait which connected him to vampirism was one depicting him eating chicken and drinking red wine in front of a field of impaled enemy soldiers and corrupt Romanian officials. Likewise only his enemies and their descendants use the demon meaning for Dracul. So his name means Vlad son of the dragon. He was reportedly one of the best rulers they ever had.

Concerning Erszebeth Bathory. The other Side is: The Hapsburgs wanted her to pay higher taxes for the "privilege" of letting her own army, which she had to sustain, fight for them. She didn't want to pay and obey. She inherited the army from her husband and the Habsburgs didn't want a woman to have that kind of Military Power and wealth. They captured her Servants and Tortured them and their testimony was the "evidence". So while she probably was cruel to servants, she was just on the crueller side of normal for that time. Everything else told about her comes from people who had a vested interest in taking her Power. She most likely was a bit of a sadist, but probably not a serial killer.

@chrysaliscreation86503 ай бұрын
Thank you for putting this in there. Bathory happens to be a hyper focus for me and there is a LOT of misinformation about her - predominantly due to the amount of power she inherited during her time and her struggle between keeping HER people safe while the Hapsburgs and Ottomans waged war (which she was caught in the middle of). Most of the “horrific” evidence that they found was common place medical treatments at the time (bloodletting, the dead being kept in cellars during the winter until the ground defrosted for burial) as well as traditional disciplinary consequences for legal infractions (splinters under nails, etc.) Cachtice (where her castle is located and where she inevitably died) considers her a hero for everything she did for the Slovakian people. I doubt a whole city would honor her if she was such a monster.
@i.b.6403 ай бұрын

Fun fact, I am related to Erzsébet Báthory . She was actually innocent and framed, she was in control of the money and estates after her husbands death and had more money than the crown, the king owed her a lot of money that he had borrowed to fund his wars and didn't want to repay it. A lot of 'witnesses' were bought off, threatened, and tortured, for their testimony and a lot of testimonies were second-hand rumors. They used Erzsébet's medical knowledge as proof that she was a vampire/witch, however she had medical knowledge because she lost several babies and almost died so she studied medicine to help others never go through what she went through.

Hi! I'm an academic folklorist. I gotta say, you did a pretty good job! Solid A on history and analysis. I would just add that a lot of "vampires" came out of Hungary because of the vampire legends. People who reenact legends as reality participate in forms of ostension. So they probably grew up hearing these stories and decided to reenact them as criminals. Vampires were also big in the 90s because of Interview with a Vampire, which is why you have people like Don (Dom?) in the spotlight. I had a group of friends who were VERY into IwaV and gave themselves names and roles...everything. This was in high school in the late 90s. I'd never read them so I was very weirded out by it. That series/film are also why vampire culture is so big in New Orleans, as it's one of the settings. Vampire obsession came back years later because of True Blood, which then directly inspired Twilight. So you can see how the vampire craze came and went in waves. It's going out of fashion again, but I'm quite certain it will return.

Kris! The Buffy series and Angel spin off are amazing you should give it a chance! if you want to watch a spooky episode for Halloween I recommend BTVS Season 4 episode 4 “Fear Itself”. Campy and fun! I give it a rewatch this time of year.

Another good one off episode for spooky season is “Hush”.

As a Hungarian it was interesting to hear how many "vampires" were from my country (I did not know them about) - luckily many-many of years ago. Great video as always, thank you!
@szilviabarany5133 ай бұрын
Yes, I didn't know about the "newer" people linking to Hungary either, and I grew up not far from Cinkota 👀 Btw, Kris, it's pronounced like how you say tsunami, try to say 'Tsin-ko-ta', that's how you get the correct name :)

There is an amazing, full cast (including David Tennant), audiobook of Carmilla. I'm not sure if it's an Audible exclusive, but I HIGHLY recommend finding it!
@KayleighWalters-uw5ng3 ай бұрын
There's also a youtube webseries on the channel KindaTV based on Carmilla, called Carmilla. It was successful enough to have 3 seasons, plus a pre-season, and a full length movie!

Being from New Orleans, I have always heard about the vampire, witch, and occult. Always been fascinating, and I love that you went into it-- only downside is I cringed every time you said New Orleans wrong. New Or-lins is how it should be said. Much love though

22:06 I visited that castle actually. The staff there will tell you the myth, but they also add that it´s most likely not true. The thing is that at that time for a woman to look good through decades and take care of castle and lands was unheard of. So people started rumours until it became this horrific story.

My last words were “I love vampires!” Seriously, though, you paint this as though it were something horrible, some kind of evil or bizarre cult, but in actuality, the real vampire community actually highly prioritise consent and respect. I have interacted with them online, and they are ordinary people with just different beliefs and a different lifestyle…
