I'm actually impressed by how many cult leaders seem fundamentally unlikable and despicable. Thinking, especially, of Keith Raniere, (Nxivm), and really BOTH of the Twin Flames leaders, although especially the guy. I have no idea how they managed to appeal to so many people. I've felt nothing but instinctual revulsion, upon watching footage of them. Although of course I get that they used ample manipulation strategies, gained people's adoration gradually, likely love bombed them at first, etc. But still.. EWWWWW!! Obvious narcissists, who do a SERIOUSLY bad job of hiding their narcissism, to the point that it is easily detectable, and turns me off IMMEDIATELY. Those are just my own sensitivities, though. I do get it more with someone like Teal Swan, (she seemed to me very interesting and knowledgeable, at first glance), and even someone like Marshall Applewhite, who did indeed seem STRANGE, and possibly not completely human, which was exactly how he sold himself, and what his cult members wanted. I also don't get it with the Jehovah's Witnesses governing body. They all seem SO smugly condescending! Like they think all their followers are stupid, and they are superiors, talking to mere children! I get offended, just looking at them.

As the adult child of an SDA, I appreciate how you worded your description and that it’s a breeding ground for cults. As I’ve been deconstructing over the past 5 years, I’ve come to believe that it’s a prime ground for victimization. I’ve been in a healthy marriage for several years now and in retrospect I can see how my childhood training made me believe that I deserved what happened to me, and that the man in my life was always correct. I appreciate how Kris always emphasizes that it’s never the victim’s fault and it’s a great reminder even decades later. It’s sad what people can justify under the name of religion. Great deep dive!

43:50 those poor babies! Is it just me or does it seem like i can’t ever go too long without hearing some friend, acquaintance, family, or internet stranger or someone on the internet talking about some kids getting SA’d and 89% the time the person either completely gets away with it or gets a slap on the wrist for their crimes?

I moved in with a friend who's Dad SA'd her on a regular basis and got me once, I reported it to VT state police, they grilled me for 8hrs refusing to feed or release me and then decided that because I didn't scream(in the woods at the end of a 20mi country rd with 0 neighbors )for his 7yr old son to save me that I was unworthy of assistance. Thanks VSP! The POS then moved to MA with his daughter/wife and son & never answered for anything. He was also a widower, TWICE, not sus at all.

Totally true. I was a victim of CSA for years and no one ever believed me because “I would have told them sooner” (I was too young to talk), or “you didn’t scream” (freeze/fawn are also trauma responses to the threat of death or harm), etc. No one believed that my ex husband was either until I had to call my therapist from a locked bathroom with my toddler and baby with me and a chair under the door that it got worse and I didn’t know how to get out because I’d literally been beaten to the point of struggling to breathe. He notified authorities and my parents drove all the way to come get us and take us away and protect us. He came back once and beat my friend and told me he’d do it again if I ever pressed charges, so it took me years to.

Yet this story was truly one of the most heartbreaking and revolting tales I have ever heard in my life. I feel sick to my stomach and am praying for the victims and their families. God bless Kris for always reminding the world it is never the victims fault.

Love the video and your content, however, I grew up in the SDA and have genuine fond memories that had a positive effect on who I am today. As a child I helped to feed the homeless every week, at the weekend we held a free social gathering with skating, games and food for ALL kids to keep them off the streets. Instead of boring the children during Sabbath we would bask in the beauty of the Earth respectfully, understanding the importance of conservation and care for nature. They were some of the best experiences of my life and I carry those beautiful values with me to this day. All were welcome and none were shunned, despite their beliefs or orientation. Bad people can come from anywhere.

I did not grow up as SDA but have recently become part of the SDA community, and I agree. The people that I have met are genuinely nice and have never seemed judgey, unlike my southern Baptist community that I grew up in. I can see how it could seem cult like based on the nontraditional beliefs, but I just wish she had not straight up bashed the SDA as a whole. I've heard others that have spoken about SDA and they would basically say how a person is from a certain faith such as SDA but that they were monsters and should not be associated with that faith as a whole. That's how I feel this fella should be thought of. As a monster who happened to use a particular denomination to gain followers.
