Regarding the question about tolerance against heat, I can confirm that I have a much better tolerance to the heat in southern Spain (where I live part time) after switching to an exclusive whole plants diet. The difference is HUGE. I think my significant weight loss plays a big role in this phenomen.

Yes I have gotten very thin and the heat doesn't bother me as much! I live in South Carolina and can go without air conditioning almost all the summer. If it gets over 90 I turn on the air a few hours but turn off at night! My husband is the same and we really don't care for air conditioning. So cold in the stores! Thank you this has been a great show!

Very interesting and educating hour with the McDougalls, as usual. Thank you. I have some recent experience with changing diets which you might find interesting. I am a 54y male living in Stockholm, Sweden. I was on the low carb high fat (LCHF) diet for about 13 years, almost everyday with less than 50 grams of carbs per day. But I realized that my glucose tolerance, or should I say insulin resistance?, has become very bad after such a long time on a low carb diet. So, I switched to a WFPB low fat diet in January to test if it will fix the root cause to insulin resistance, which is claimed to be the fat in the diet. And yes, testing with a CGM clearly shows a MUCH better tolerance of glucose, I would say it's a normal rise after a high carb meal nowadays, compared to sky high levels when on a low carb high fat diet. I also noticed after switching diets that my tolerance to cold became worse, when the weather is cold I'm freezing considerably more. On the other hand, my heat tolerance seems better in the warm summer. I guess getting your energy from fat (ketones) is practical in winter to keep you warm, and getting energy mainly from sugar is best in the summer to be more heat tolerant. So, besides a high fat diet allegedly making you sick in the long run it's quite practical when living in a cold country as Sweden :-) But I choose to freeze in winter (or use warmer clothes...) and be well in the long run.

Insulin resistance normally occurs in people as a result normally of excess fat/lipid levels in the cells and blood. One of the jobs of insulin is fat storage (necessary, although usually secondary in the moment to glucose metabolism and uptake, it's still important). Insulin resistance will happen though if too much fat over time is stored, to stop obesity and fat satiation in cells beyond their natural capacity to store it. Ketosis, long term, is a state normally reflecting metabolic sickness and/or starvation amelioration: throughout the animal kingdom. It's got little to do with seasons or weather, except in as much as glucose and sometimes secondarily, plant protein sources have been much scarcer in places where humans have not traditionally lived in our early history - e.g. the excessively very cold or very hot places. (Wonderful and beautiful as it can be, I lived there for a period in my youth - I think we could put Sweden for most of its history in the former camp... :)) Sounds like you've been misinformed sadly a long time about this? Have you been, or are, type 2 diabetic? That is normally 100% reversible, with excess fat coming out of cells via a healthy starch based diet. Feel free to check out Dr M's presentations on YT for diabetes, and the website materials. Best to you.

@@JohnDoe-xk1dv I am not (and have not been) a diabetic. But I'm interested in health and diets and trying to figure out what is best in the long run. Trying to have an open mind. But it's quite confusing to say the least, because the low carb high fat camp can show a bunch of studies showing good results with the diet, and a lot of positive testimonials from people. When looking at the opposite, the high carb low fat camp, there's also studies showing good results and positive testimonials. But there are a couple of things I think is strong evidence, in the favor of WFPB low fat: * Angiograms clearly showing a reversal of heart disease (Esselstyn and Ornish). I have not seen this type of evidence with the LCHF diet. * People with diabetes type 1 increasing the carb intake dramatically, at the same time decreasing their insulin doses. They know exactly how much insulin they use each day so this is good proof. I have seen videos explaining this at the "Mastering Diabetes" YT channel with Cyrus and Robby. It's consistent with what you say, the problem is the fat.
@JohnDoe-xk1dv Жыл бұрын
@@TimoRajala bear in mind what Dr M has said about bias in research here - and where money and industry get involved. People that sell animal products and oil are desperate to see weight loss and reduced calories for temporary blood number gains they can publish, by getting people into ketosis. That can create confusion, but those numbers are temporary,(as are the testimonials). And that's the problem Many folk I've also noticed with the McD program and similar found health after trying and failing with low carb and ketogenic, after realising these are not sustainable. It's not then a surprise that several credible meta reviews now suggest increased all cause mortality and reduced life span from low carb and ketogenic diets. Otherwise, you're spot on with your points. And the Mastering Diabetes channel is indeed terrific from what I've seen of it :))

@courag1 Жыл бұрын
@@jenny-leighparmley6094 As I am post menopausal, some soy is good for me. I likely finish a container of Soy milk in more than a month. The amount of 2 Tbsp of the Soy milk is negligible. Since eating potatoes for breakfast, I don’t use the Soy milk on cereal any longer. The lowest plant-based milk which is readily available is cashew and rice milk but quinoa but have not seen this milk in stores but it is by far the lowest. I am burning more fat as I am walking 10,000 Steps which amounts to 4.8 miles. This raises the amount of calories burned throughout the day also. I never drink a glass of milk. I drink water or herbal teas and in the summer it is all with ice. We burn more calories to restore our temperature to normal also.

@@jenny-leighparmley6094bear in mind, in commercial plant milks the amount of oil is very small (literally a handful of drops for mouthfeel in a carton as I understand). If you have heart disease or risk of it, avoid; or any allergies to any binders or thickeners used - but, unsweetened commercial plant milks are far, far superior to the animal milk the majority of the population is drinking. If you can find minimally processed plant milk, or make your own, even better - but don't make the perfect the enemy of the good here! May not want to OD on it, but so much better than the dairy alternatives...

Thank you for this video and all your work you are doing! Unfortunately Dr McDougall did not update his knowledge on Vitamin D … There are a lot of RCT demonstrating the importance of Vitamin d in preventing cancer, autoimmune diseases (diabetes 1 , multiple sclerosis etc) and many other diseases (COVID19)etc… Elderly should all take vitamin D as their capabilities to produce vitamin d is very low…
@JohnDoe-xk1dv Жыл бұрын
I think you (a) kindly need to cite your sources here (Dr M has, and also explained in this presentation why sometimes not all research may be equally as valid, often based on commercial and pharmaceutical interests). Related to that point (b) Not all RCT's either are designed equally or ethically - which sadly Dr M didn't mention here, but is important. I used to teach research methods, and spoke with a student on this point to illustrate: you could design an RCT say that looks at people's blood sugar and fat levels with a Jello control group, compared to an experimental Twinkie group, and Herschey groups. Oh, the Jello group works out much better, you say? That's dishonest, as we know that the best control is not necessarily Jello. However, incredibly and sadly, this is essentially the biased logic researchers can use to select groups (e.g. the egg industry Dr Greger has covered as being guilty of this type of trickery time and again for instance, to try and fool the public into thinking eggs are healthy). If you know how to look for it, you can then start to understand what RCTs are worth paying attention to, and which are not. Biased RCTs exist, but I've seen even high level people fooled by them, because they don't understand how they can manipulated, or trust that biased (usually paid by industry) researchers won't do it. But beware: they have, and they do. That vitamin D via sunlight has been restricted at all, because of sedentary and indoor living, is the real issue here. Possible side effects of vit D in pill form in excess ironically shouldn't even be an issue as it shouldn't even be considered as healthy in comparison. But here we are.

He's using old studies and their methods are breathtakingly bad. They all dose huge, toxic boluses in either monthly or semi-annually doses. And then they look for stupid outcomes such as falls or bone health? Good studies always dose once per day and in amounts between 2000 and 5000 international units. Today I'm looking at a study in the _American Heart Journal_ called, "The effect of vitamin D3 supplementation on atrial fibrillation in generally healthy men and women: The Finnish Vitamin D Trial" and shows excellent results from daily supplementation.

Was surprised how much it grossed me out, which I never imagined would be the case before I started. People can live on just about anything in an emergency, and at the extremes thanks to our body's design - but the robust science supports that a whole plant foods, starch based diet is king and queen for long term health.
