While living in the Philippines I went on a trip to the sea side for four of us. When the day came 25 people turned up. I had to feed and pay for them all for two days. You live and learn eh. On the way back to the house I stopped and bought a Ham burger which turned out to be a BIG mistake too. Some things are best kept secret.

I am a Brit living with my family in the Philippines. I agree with most of your points except 1) sarcasm - I don't have many non-Filipino friends, and my sarcasm tends to be self-deprecating in that I take the piss out of myself and they recognise this and now do the same. 2) My wife has a daughter from her first marriage. Her husband deserted her. I have no issue with looking after her daughter, who is doing well at school, nor do I have a problem with supporting our niece who is doing her best to get ahead in life. She is at university and I fund her so she does not have to worry about money while she is studying for a better life. I met my wife in HK where we lived for 5 years before coming here and that has been an advantage. While we provide her family with employment we don't simply dish out cash and she made that very clear to her family. That may be my personal experience. Everything else you say, though, is pretty much on point.

Absolutely Joshua. My intention wasn't to make it seem like all women in the Philippines are gold diggers (baby mommas was probably not the best term to use). What you and your wife have going on is great - making it clear that you won't dish out money. The point I mentioned were for those that purely come to the Philippines to have multiple girlfriends, not for already married couples. Because, as you know, some guys will take on multiple girlfriends without knowing the repercussions I mentioned in the video 💯 Thanks for sharing Joshua.

​@@TheSavvyExpat My wife pretty much decided we were going to relocate to the Philippines after our son was born. I wasn't exactly averse to the idea, but I just needed a push. I was comfortable in HK, but not exactly happy so she gave me the kick in the butt I needed! Interestingly, we have provided her sisters/family with the money required so they can make cash for themselves. That is all they needed. To me it is an investment since, in true capitalist style, they make a profit from their work and we get a dividend from our investment. Everybody wins, so who can complain. And, I get to drink San Mig and sleep late.

Brooooo spot on with the topic about sarcasm. Most people don't mention it as part of the experience in videos even though its pretty well understood as a foreigner that knows Filipino culture. We should play tennis when I visit the Philippines haha. I played tennis all my life and just a year ago finished playing college tennis for George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

Filipino humor includes sarcasm too. The thing is jokes, whether sarcastic or in any other form, sometimes don't really translate or come across well regardless of who you are giving the jokes to, it really depends on how successfully you can get the joke across and how successfully other people will receive it.

Great advice!! I guess to each their own. Filipinos have been a blessing to me and I have a deep set love and appreciation for the culture. The fun of traveling for me is to experience and navigate new cultures. There’s just so much to learn. If one keeps their expectations in check and tries not to get offended, I think it can be a great experience. Just like you shouldn’t use sarcasm, don’t use snark either. In fact, don’t use snark anywhere, lol. Snark is mean, disrespectful and cowardly. One needs to up their humility and respect to match the local culture. Try not to act like you own the place and realized that you are a foreign guest with guest-like responsibilities. Appreciate the hospitality that you receive because that’s a #1 strength of this culture along with the connectedness.

All very good advice , I have been travel and spending my winters in the Philippines for the last 17 yrs , all I can say it is by far one of the best countries I have spent time in. Here is a tip they give 20% off to senior's on the bus , hotels and restraints you do have to ask , for me that's amazing . Good luck to anyone thats going there you will love the people , I have never had a bad experience there with anything.

When you carry cash, try to avoid overloading on larger 1,000 peso bills. Many places will struggle to cash those, especially if you're buying something low cost. If you are out shopping at SM or the malls that's not a real problem, but local stores really do appreciate the smaller denominations.

Spot on Rick but I find it hard when you go to the foreign exchange and they only give it to you in 1,000 bills then you are going around big shops trying to use them to get small bills to use in local shops

Try to withdraw a number that ends in 900 from an ATM e.g. 4900. Hide the 500 and the 4 100's in your wallet and keep the 1000. Purchase only with the 1000's and keep hiding the change. Start to use the change once you have broken all the 1000's. If anyone asks if you have a smaller, lie and say no. Exception is Jeeps and smaller places, but if at a mall any store should be able to get change. Banks will usually make change for you, but it will involve a line and some waiting.

Will, if you're an expat living in the Philippines, you should be the one to adjust with Filipino culture, don't expect the host country with adjust for you. Even if you are a Balikbayan growing up in other country. Though Filipinos are naturally flexible and they really the one adjusting to foreign visitors but don't expect and please respect Filipino culture.

In my case as a Filipino living in the Philippines, this country is really embarrassing to any foreigners, the problems surpass the advantages. So I am willing to listen to the complaints of those foreigners because I face reality, not sugar-coated. The foolish family culture here really stucks, like foreigners that are in-laws are relied on for monetary aspects, so nakakahiya. So in my case I rather stay single for the rest of my life, because I will pity my partner as relatives here think that way. No wonder the Philippines is getting poorer as time goes by and absolutely surpassed by its neighboring countries in Asia, because this country has many bad values that are really embarrassing, like foolish family values, procrastination, corruption, poor healthcare system, poor infrastructure, gossipy environment, laziness and political immaturity. I have experienced living and working abroad so I can really compare. This is the truth, all Filipinos should accept this and try to remove these bad values, only then this country will get better.

I see a clip of you playing tennis. My favorite things to do during the summer in Canada is playing tennis and golf. I'm wondering if I'll be able to find a place to play tennis or golf if I retire in the Philippines? I checked Google maps and it looks like the quality of the tennis courts are not the same as in Canada. As long as the ball bounces true I'll be happy with the courts or golf course.

One comment about the foreigner picking up the tab. In Asian countries I've lived in the oldest/wealthiest person is expected to pay the tab in restaurants. Would be a loss of face for them if they didn't. The Western idea of splitting the bill is perceived as horrible.

We should all decide to be blind, except for the the enablers of corruption & those powerless to affect it. I'm not totally sure Devon. From our experience, we got pulled over in Subic and the officer said that our American license isn't valid here. He still let us off. So I believe you need to be registered and licensed. I'll research it.

@@devonferris If your renting a car I would make you sure you get insurance or you're covered through your CC. My AMEX platinum I have a premium car rental policy through my CC whenever I rent a car. Now if your driving a private car make sure it's properly registered and insured and you have legal permission to drive. When I get there next week one of 1st things I am getting my Philippine DL. I personally already have a vehicle that is mine waiting for me. It's already registered and insured, just needs me in the seat. 😎

Filipinos love pets, especially dogs. Just don't hurt them and you'll be fine. If you hurt a dog here, you'll be exposed in social media. Tho be careful, lots of free roaming dogs especially in the province and rabies does exist here, so make sure they are vaccinated.

I'm Filipino living in the Philippines. I went to mang inasal SM davao, davao city, they don't accept cards or e-wallet. But no worry, marami kang pwedeng kainan doon. Firstly, bago ka pumila ng mahaba ay magtanong ka muna sa casher kung tumatanggap sila ng cards or e-wallets. I am open talking with the real situation here in our country specially the poverty, government services, and a lot more socio-economic problem that I know. But a lot of people here in the Philippines, prepare and make them selves believe in lies than truth, because life is already hard. There is no more space for truth, truth hurts. I remember the one thing I am offended with, when I read a page in a book that says: Philippines has a lot of prostitute. Hello? I hear a lot of foreigners say filipinos don't understand sarcasm. Filipinos do sarcastic jokes...in FILIPINO! Or in their native language (filipinos call them dialects) like ilocano, cebuano. pangasinense, etc.. If you do sarcasm in english, filipinos will have to think and decide if you're being serious or not, that is except those who are fully exposed to the west.

This is my reply to your episode: Ten reasons why expats leave the Philippines. This is my opinion about your thoughts savvy. After reading all the exchanges of replies you and readers of comments on display (because replies needed click first to show up). You live in the Philippines and you enjoyed it in some degree..however, of course there must be some negatives anywhere in the world including the Philippines. But would you take responsibily ...to appease/minimize the many extreme negative thought about this country they are trying to imply generally? Because you are the one they ask!! ...Not all the Filipinos are expecting/waiting all the time for a 'hand out' from any foreigner their family member/relative involved with, you can oftenly see relatives feed by their foreign partners but mostly only on special occations/celebrations. More often they're just having curiousity & wanting to be friend to you. Many of us are farmers, fishers, sellers, drivers, mechanics, artist/painters, carpenters, decorators, beautician, technicians, musicians etc. Of course there are some lazy individuals everywhere, you even have machines even on simple dishwashings.. there are some do always thought of money in their minds, gamblers, drunkards, addicted to dangerous drugs, psychopaths, Godless..Now tell us, where in the world not having some individuals like these? America? Nope. You are the one to correct them because you started all these..but instead, you allow them to mock Filipinos and adds futher points in agreement to their saying. Be true to your conscience and experience! Do you really a witness or actually witnessing, that generally as I read all your exchanges of thoughts.. Filipinos are robbers/ lazy?.. if you are unsure, Say it to them. I know you are still young but you started this. You even suggested go ahead signal to a query to take Filipina fiance/wife just to spare them the hassles of life here in Ph.. that's Ridiculous. You victimized us with Asian hate crimes in your country not to mention other difficulties.. still you'll pursue us in our own land? And still we treat you right and respect you. Of course we know Government has issues of corruption and mismanagements! And that sincere/voluntary/unconditional love/help to needy.. that is the thing what we welcome from anyone, thank you. I haven't been to place where I'd hear yo mama jokes as often as in the Philippines, especially in like 2016, 2017. Also some points from my experience living there. Some people expect you to behave like a filipino, they feel offended if you want to express your own way, some think it just that they charge you more for stuff because you're a foreigner, some will always bother you wanting money. There are surely reasons to be happy there, but especially if you're not that rich, just be careful pls, it can become a nightmare. Thanks for this video also pointing out the important things.

Hello here are some insights from a local: 1) Agree. Asking a foreigner personal questions such as "are you single?" "Where are you from?" and such are for locals to get to know you. To find a common ground. Sarcastic jokes are a bit tricky to navigate. Your example was at a restaurant and you threw a sarcastic joke at a waiter who does not know you personally and did not know that you were joking. That server.may have erred on the side of caution to not offended therefore, professional reaction instead of laughter. If it was thrown to a friend then maybe your joke just bombed? Or maybe they are responding sarcastically to your sarcastic joke thus the straight face? 😊 2) Agree - carry cash but hide most well. Isn't this a general rule when traveling? 3) Agree. Filipinos have high regard for their.mothers. The worst swear word is "Putang ina mo" which translates to "Your mother is a b!tch" 4) Agree. Be careful with your money where ever you are or whom ever you are with. I suggest you talk it out with your GF and come to an agreement. Just remember that family is very important to most Filipinos. 5) Agree. If you are too flashy, you will come across as ignorantly arrogant. Easy pickings for those with bad intentions. Isn't it the same in most countries? 6) Agree. isn't this supposed to be an international rule. Don't be jerk. If you are.one everyone will know it and they will be forewarned. I believe no one likes jerks. 7) Agree. No bashing of the country or its citizens. You haven't been in our shoes so you do not have the right. If you wish to suggest something for the betterment of the sociery, do it in a respectful way. Don't whiney about it. No one likes that. 8) Agree. No additional comment as he explained it well. As a whole, humily and respect goes a long way where ever you visit. Look at it this way, if you have a visitor at your house would you appreciate it if they criticize your home? Or be disrespectful to a loved one? Or was a jerk to you? Or judge you without knowing you first? Or trash your home? Or was whiney? If you answered yes to any of the above, pleace stay out of the Philippines. We already have a lot of problems and we do not wish for you to add to it. 😊
