The Doobie Brothers have the one of, if not the most, feel good vibes from any band I've covered on this channel so far. Really enjoyed this song.

The Doobie Brothers music has stood the test of time. It's worth it to explore their catalog. Like other have said, "Black Water" is a gem.

Black Water was originally the b side of one of their 45's. Deejays flipped the record and made it a national hit!

The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "Black Water", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "China Grove", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.

My fav of the Doobies is by far "Black Water", but I would listen to a couple others of theirs first, because to me this is their best. Can't go wrong listening to the Doobie Bros.

For my money the Doobies are America's rock band. For over 50 years this band has stood the test of time, producing great music and iconic songs that are hummed, sung and danced to my millions. BTW, these greats are still rocking and still sound damned good, even in their early 70s!

Watch "use me" live by Bill Withers and then listen to the record version. There are some really great live performances but you never know what you are gonna get! Also Van Halens version of the Best of both Worlds " live is phenomenal and I can't listen to the studio version anymore bc Eddie just gets his flare going and the whole part gets a little more feel! Highly recommend

With just a handful of exceptions, always always ALWAYS make your first listen of a song the original studio/radio edit. On this one, in particular, you would've been able to hear an aspect of sound travel predominantly from one ear to the other (I'm sure there's a technical name for this effect, but I don't know it), among other subtleties, not present in this live version. I'm not mad at ya, just some food for thought.

When I first heard LTTM on the radio, it sounded like rock music w a country flair. The added banjo on the studio version will take you there. Overall it's a feel good song... If you give a listen to their song "Black Water" they dive deeper into the country sound w a fiddle solo and barber shop quartet harmonies/vocals.

My favorite of the Doobie Brothers is this song ("Listen to the Music") and "What a Fool Believes". Both are awesome. Many good songs from them. They did a good job keeping this live version close to the studio version. I always like when bands keep the song sounding like the studio version since that's what we expect to hear. Great review.

Ya ! well i love the studio version ! that one was to promote themselves ! seems like they don t hear themselves as good here ! but they did it and they really didn t need to do that to make themselves popular ! really the original that we all know is an instant hit !

The Midnight Special was the shower all stayed up on Friday night to watch our favorite bands of that era. The sound was typically terrible and most of them would come on and be a little flat. But we didn’t care because anyone who had a hit we could see on that show!!

Black water & Long Train Running are must listens & would recommend the studio versions first. Blackwater is my go to song to put me in a happy place! Hear it once & you’ll be able to sing along! Great reaction, as always welcome to a new rabbit hole. As others have said, Three Dog Night (Joy to The World…and that’s not the Christmas song…and Momma Told Me Not To Come) are also worth a listen.

Love these guys, and glad you enjoyed them … but I agree with others here and prefer the studio version. They do live very well (they’re still touring, I believe), but the studio version really rocks. This sounded a little flat - and the absence of the banjo is very noticeable. Black Water is another excellent choice. As a side note (and since I’m a Home Fry and can’t help myself), you might check out Home Free’s version of this song. It’s (as always) amazing!

I’ve seen them perform this live and they had a few extra people up there with them and it was absolutely amazing. Much better than this appearance on the midnight special. This version is good but it’s a little stripped down so it doesn’t have the effect that it has when I’ve seen them appear live in other appearances or venues. There’s a few other videos out there as well Of this song with them performing it and I hope you get a chance to see if you more. I saw them tour a few years back with the group Chicago. Both bands have been performing for over 50 years now. And they sounded just as good live as they did when they were youngsters.

The guitarist on the left is Patrick Simmons who played the banjo on the studio version. Almost all their songs, at least in the early years, were written by Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston (the lead singer here). Both of them wrote songs that were big hits. Personally, I always like Pat Simmons compositions a little better but both musicians are excellent. Later, Michael McDonald would join the Doobies and his songs had a very different feel compared to the earlier work.

The Doobie Brothers are very good. On a little heavier note, another California band you should give a listen to is Spirit. Either the Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (When I Touch You) or the Family That Plays Together (either Aren't You Glad or It's All the Same). Very hot minimalist lead guitar solo by Randy on Aren't You Glad. Maybe 3 notes but excellently played.
