The Doors were an exceptionally talented and eccentric group. The late Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist, wrote this song. I saw a KZbin video where he explained the intricacies of composing this masterpiece. He used many musical influences including J.S. Bach. He was a genius at musical theory, and he met the singer, Jim Morrison while the attended UCLA. Jim Morrison's primary interest was writing until Ray Manzarek influenced him to become a rock singer. Robby Kreiger, the guitarist, was a flamenco (Spanish) guitarist until he joined the Doors. The drummer, John Densmore, was a jazz drummer until he joined the Doors. Robby and John still jam in the LA area. This was a fascinating melding of great talent! Jim Morrison was buried in Paris at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in 1971. My wife and I visited Paris last year (my first time) and I made a point to see Jim Morrison's grave while we were there (it is not easy to find!).

If I remember correctly, the lyrics were mostly written by Robbie Krieger with Jim Morrison finishing it off; typically - Jim added the bit about the "funeral pyre" !

"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite." -- William Blake. The name of the band comes from Aldous Huxley's book THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION and that title came from the Blake quote.

The band’s name arose from a quote by William Blake in his book, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” They were going to name themselves “The Doors of Perception,” but decided to shorten it. “The Doors” sounds like a cool name and it has an intriguing meaning. You have no idea what a multi-dimensional rabbit hole you’ve stepped into here with The Doors! You don’t need to understand them; you just need to feel them. "Release control. We're breaking through." OH, MY!! I GOTTA GO!! I'm Late! I'm late! I'm very, very late!

Glad you appreciate their musicianship and especially the drummer, John Densmore, a very accomplished drummer who had lots of jazz influence in his drumming. The name Doors came from an autobiographical book, ‘Doors of Perception,’ by the famous author Aldous Huxley who recounts in it his experiences with psychedelics and its mystical insights. So many great Doors songs to react to such as "The End", "Crystal Ship" "Touch Me" and the epic "Riders on the Storm".
@tonyharmon851210 ай бұрын
The name of the band "The Doors" is a shortening of the name of a book "The Doors of Perception" by Aldus Huxley. Jim was first and foremost a poet, his singing was secondary in his mind. You also have to know that when the band formed and for a couple more years LSD was still legal and they partook of it liberally. It is where some of the lyrics get their very vivid imagery but it all still turns back into the song as good poetry does. You would almost have to go back to the 'Beat' poets of the late 50's and earliest 60's to connect to the poetic styles.

Jim Morrison was a member of the 27 Club which are the rock stars who passed away at the age of 27. Hi Ola, this brings back so many memories. My Dad and uncle used to sing this when we went on camping trips. Unfortunately, they both had terrible voices. 😩 Jim Morrison was a pretty strange dude, but he was extremely talented. He passed away in 1971. An autopsy was not performed, so the cause of his death was never confirmed, though many people believe it was a drug overdose. After Morrison's death, Manzarek and Krieger took over the lead vocals.
@susieq980110 ай бұрын
He had congestive heart failure but that was very likely due to excessive drug use. Something similar happened to Andy Gibb (from previous cocaine use) whose heart was weakened as a result and he died from myocarditis, a heart inflammation caused by a virus that most people would survive.

Mick Jagger was in the front row and Jim's girlfriend was sitting on his lap. Jim was not too happy about that but in this he smiles at her. It is pretty bad other than Ray the organ player and John the drummer. Robby had issues with his amp and they were playing outdoors so he was pissed off. The Doors paid a fortune to self finance this show to be filmed and sad to say while it looks great it is lackluster. There tour of Europe early the same year, 68, was far better but in black and white. They also had major issues with Jim's mic cutting out and had to fly in vocals from other shows to fix it. While very cool not what I would recommend to a new fan.
