The indian bit has to do with Jim and his family coming up on a group of people that were killed in a car crash when he was four. He always thought one of the people dyiing's soul lept into his body.

The spoken lines, "Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding. Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind," are about when he was a child, and his parents, maybe his grandparents, and him were driving through the desert and they came across an accident where native Americans had been in a bad accident. Jim saw this, and he swore the spirit(s) of one/some of them jumped into his mind. It could be that this is what gave him the shaman persona.

its literal indeed re NM childhood wreck occurance.... but he scales out to a broader symbolic meaning wh/ ties to the theme of other parts of this song. that amer was borne in violence. its infancy (childhood) & dawn (creation) was partly acquired thru the clashing of the indian tribes & its own conquest out west. in turn, that past violence in its early stages still haunts it like ghosts until its resolved, it will cyclically reoccur.

One of the poems the lyrics came from was called something like An American Abortion. The line about the river running red down the legs of the city makes me think of that. But generally, yeah, it's about the unrest of the time. The violence in Chicago at the Democratic convention in 1968. Also, Jim Morrison wss arrested onstage in New Haven for swearing. More background.

You guys didn't like The End which is common if you can't understand Psychedelia. Peace Frog is the same as well as most every Doors song so if you can't understand it why comment negatively.

New Haven, CT gets a mention in this song because that is where Jim was arrested for indecent exposure, abruptly ending their concert. He possibly showed the audience his junk. I've never heard a definitive answer on whether it happened or not.

The New Haven arrest was for inciting a riot because a cop cockblocked him backstage. The indecent exposure one was in Miami.

I thought they were about the assassination of MLK. A number of people, mainly blacks, were killed. There were other riots in some other cities, too, and people were killed in them, also.

whats cool about morrison's best stuff (& I'd place this on that level) is its broad view of the arc of the entire culture. its underpinnings, its birth, its ghosts & its cylical reoccurances.... this song in turn has eternal themes or at the very least the period of western civl influences on n amer shores to present republic or empire. its relevant now as we enter seemingly another period of possible unrest.

wasp and riders touch on many of the same themes as here. & also done in a poetic symbolist method wh/ looks back, to the present or where its going forward down the curvy road, river or hiway.

The engine of the song is Morrison reflecting on an abortion he paid for. He told the woman that he wouldn't make a good father.

I Just found your Channel and , so far all good. There are soo many songs from the 1960's and 70's that have deep Christian foundations. These are Artist that grew up with Christian foundations but their lyrics find a balance with their new secular world. Tons of sarcastic expressions and, as for the Doors, utter disdain for their audience. Please do; Jethro Tull, Virtually anything off his greatest hits but should really check out Locomotive Breath, It's about Darwinian evolution and the cultural ramifications as well as Bungle in the Jungle. Also, check out Suzanne by Leonard Cohen There's so much more. Into the late 1980's or so, Live, Lighting Crashes Better yet I alone God Bless

Not a very good adaptation of Jim or the band. The band was very much against this film. Watch the documentary "When You're Strange" a film the band endorsed.

your not giving yourself enough credit re poetry. your right, this is poetic & though the rhyme pattern isnt convential, it nevertheless connects & draws out a theme & form... I'll add another thing about morrison & poetry. he was big into symbolist poetry. a style used by william blake who he was really into. so the body of a woman isnt literal but symbolic of a greater body of the culture. by using a woman he gives a meaning too of fertile creativity (wh/ is part of the amer ethos). but as you guys point out, violence is always the other side of amer pulling at her ankles to try to make her (freedom) fall. amer yields hope, but it is also a nation borne in bloody violence & the use of violence.... also religion is a big part of amer creation & evolvement. & the blood & suffering of Christ holds resonance here.... finally, it is about the violent period of upheaval of the late '60s w/ riots in chicago & other towns. but it also broadens out to a bigger cyclical theme of where the idea of freedom will go. will it sustain? must it sacrifice to move forward?... the idea of her (freedom) driving into town w/ hope (sunlit hair) but driving away, implies more suffering must occur until new light can be found... the child's eggshell mind on dawns hiway, is referencing his own experience as a child seeing a horrible wreck in NM w/ indian dead on the streets. but its also metaphorically pointing out that amer was borne in conquest and blood as tribes fought the euros & americans on the native n amer soil. these ghosts in a sense still haunt and shape our future to some degree.... you should listen to WASP. its poetically similar.
