Thanks for the review of this new Doors box set by Rhino High Fidelity. I personally think it's fantastic that Rhino has gone back and released these historically AND musically significant albums by the Doors and they have obviously spent a lot of time and expense in getting most of not all of the details right. We can debate until the "cows come home" if this is a "cash grab". Well, my answer simply is, "if you think so, then DON'T buy it". Simple enough, right?! However, we must remember that artists and record companies make money buy selling "product" and I want to encourage the record companies to please continue to release "product" that has been thoughtfully curated and manufactured and this box set seems to check off every box! Well done once again Rhino!!

Nice review. All other things being equal, it's not easy to compare 33 and 45 cuts of the same album. But given different cutting engineers as is the case here all other things aren't equal, so it's interesting to hear your take on subtle differences. My copy should arrive in the next few days, and I'm looking forward to hearing these.

As always, your commentary is informative and interesting. The box set is a lot more than I would usually spend, but it sounds like a great set. There will be a discussion of the Doors on the "Royce in the House" channel on Sunday evening. I'm sure you would have a lot of interesting things to say if you were to join in on the discussion. They stick to the music, and don't talk politics or KZbinrs' personalities, so they have some really good and positive discussions of classic rock.

I love The Doors, Strange days is the first I heard and my favourite, though I don't like the AP 45's, on my system; it lacks the coherence of the other versions I have? mono included. "These guys burned brightly." I love that! They did indeed.

Great review. I love Morrison Hotel. Though I love Soft Parade I much rather listen to Morrison Hotel. I feel like Soft Parade is their weakest. But different strokes for different folks. Rock on! Curious why the Rhino Soft Parade includes a replica inner sleeve but none of the others do? Strange, would have LOVED to see replicas of the original brown Elektra inner sleeves. I do love the inside of gatefold for the Rhino S/T album, very nice!

Thank you for the in depth review Mazzy! I enjoyed it. I received my box set just this afternoon. While I could have bought the AP reissues I am not a fan of the 45rpm version of any audiophile recording. But sometimes you don't have a choice. I am glad that they did these Rhino HiFi's on 33rpm.

I have all the AP 45s but I’m definitely selling or trading them off when this box comes in. The APs sound great but all that flipping is not only just plain annoying to have to get up to flip every 8 minutes or so, but most importantly it really kills the vibe and sequencing of the album for me. Whenever I want to listen to a Doors album, I find myself grumbling a bit at the thought of having to “deal with” the 45 cut, so I just end up spinning a 1-LP 33 instead… which then makes me feeel like I wasted money on the APs because I never pull them out 😅 Problem solved now! 😊

Mazzy - you are always thinking and commenting outside the box!! I bought just (1) 45 rpm LP. Music From Big Pink - The Band. That was it - what a pain in the ass 2 LP's and the constant 'flip'. Biggest marketing/audio mistake (in my humble opinion) for a minimal gain and not mentioning the addl. cost! Rhino /Warner Doors box set has proven that point. Great Vid!

having owned a bunch of doors albums for a long time, a box set would mean little to me. I was glad to replace my Strange Days with an audiophile copy, because my original suffered from back in the day room mate abuse, it was often in heavy rotation. the album cover always reminds me of Venice Beach from that period, where they played the leopard club, and being the best band in Venice was a very big deal in the community.

The AP 45 of Morrison Hotel really upped my appreciation of the album - it was such an improvement. I haven't had a chance to listen to the new Rhino version yet. The recent 33 rpm version of L.A. Woman by AP has the cellophane on the front cover. I was so bummed when Morrison checked out after this album. It's just tough all the way around - Manzarek updated his keyboard sound and the band just locked in with bass player Jerry Scheff on board. It felt like a new day for them to my ears.

Great video on this Rhino box compared to the 45 AP! I have all the 45 AP albums. I bought the Rhino box for my dad. I think he’s going to love it! I was a bit worried about the difference! For the first album, Robby has said a few times, that Elektra actually reused the tape, because they didn’t know the Doors would be such a hit. Back in those days, tapes were taped over. He said it wasn’t because the tape was damaged, but because it was taped over. Also, for Indian Summer, that song was recorded for the first album. They didn’t want to have that song and “The End” because of the eastern influence on both. They would be too similar. So when Morrison Hotel came along, they had Jim re-record his vocals for the song. Robby has one of those Dan Electro sitars, but didn’t use one on any album because the sympathetic strings were too difficult to tune back then. Jimi Hendrix had three of those, but I don’t think he used them as well. They are fun, I’ve never messed with tuning the sympathetic strings myself.

The only comparison I can do is the originals red orange and butterfly labels with the new Rhino’s. “Waiting For The Sun” track list was initially very different. Jim wanted and fought for “Celebration of the Lizard” to be Side 2.But was out vetoed by the group, and of course Paul Rothschild.It was recorded in the studio, but omitted.Much to Jim’s annoyance. I think it appears on a 2007 “Best of…” compilation? So they apparently scrambled around to find songs to fill Side2. Hence the shorter songs filled the second side. They even added “Summer’s Almost Gone”.Which originally was a Jim song they recorded as a demo back in ‘65? According to John Densmore, “The Soft Parade” was their answer to “Sgt Pepper …” Adding horns and strings.Apparently himself, and Ray being jazz nuts, wanted to add the strings, and horns at some point.So they got their wish on this album. This was the first album, that Jim insisted upon the credits being credited to the individual. Certain lyrics he didn’t want to sing, or be credited as writing. e.g. “Tell All the People” He didn’t want to sing about “get your guns”.Especially considering he wasn’t for many “Mr Popularity”around this time. Also “Touch Me” again which was Robby’s song.Was originally called “Hit Me”. Again Jim felt that someone could come up to him and literally punch, or worse.Assault him! After singing these lyrics. Anyway enjoyed your extensive review Mazzy.👍🏻

I found this to be a good honest review of the latest the doors repackaging. However, I also find these modern day remastering deals to be the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig. I find the originals, or even the re-issues on elektra to be most true to what was meant to be. Sure, there are limitations... but it is what it is. I'll leave the re-imaginations to Disney. I saw them (at The Cow Palace in '65), and Hendrix, and the doors, but never saw The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield (though my teenage band did open for Dewey Martin's late BS lineup in '69 at a High School in San Jose. By the way, the second time I saw the doors live (at The Santa Clara County Folk-Rock Festival in '68), they unfortunately had to follow The Electric Flag on stage. Unfortunately because The Flag---with Harvey Brooks on bass, Buddy Miles on drums, and Mike Bloomfield on guitar, along with four saxes!---were SO awesome. Following them, the doors sounded lightweight, anemic. Like boys, not men.

As with all these reissues ,the original version has the vision of the people making the music at the time. Anything after the fact is always going to be a compromise . Where possible I always end up returning to the original (when affordable) Or accepting the fact that it will never improve on the original .Can anyone honestly think of a repress that comfortably improves on an original mini or near mint copy. That said a very interesting comparison as with all your posts Mr Maslov.

Same way artists choose a 15ips over a 30ips , or 1/4 inch over a 1/2 inch! Because there's benefits and differences to each, maybe the bass is better on the 15ips whereas the treble is tighter on the 30 and so on and so fourth! Just depends on what the artist or the listener wants! Sound is always subjective!😊

I mention them; not as good as either of these sets. They were digital and decent but not great.

@ I may pick up new mastering of the debut, but I have really nice, mostly Monarch pressings of the original albums, plus all the 45 AP’s and multiple CD box sets and remasters, so I think I’m good with the Doors catalogue. A favorite band no doubt. Thanks for another great review, Mazzy.
