I love Dr. B! Finally a doctor who understands the microbiome in detail. I have been dealing with IBS since my 20s and was „floxed“ (injured by levafloxacin antibiotic) years ago. I was in pain for months and doctors had no idea what could be the cause. I started researching and found thousands of other people who’s health was damaged by antibiotics. Eating a plantbased diet helped me to get better but I still have a lot of food sensitivities since then. I bought Dr. B‘s book and hope to get some more clarity.

After some extensive dental work my dentist said I'm going to give you a prescription for antibiotics. As I have been a healthy vegan for almost 5 years now, I decided to refuse them and put it to the test. Two weeks later I went back for a check up. She was amazed that I was healing so well without antibiotics. I didn't need them!

I think we should all avoid antibiotics as much as possible, but modern surgery is possible because we have antibiotics, dont fall to the extremes. Most people are fine with doing interventions without antibiotics, its a preventive measure that should be taken serious because the dangerous of infection outweigh the dangerous of antibiotics.
@sectionalsofa7 ай бұрын
@@JoaoRelego I just had a dental implant and hesitatingly agreed to take antibiotics as a precautionary measure. Having had a life threatening post op infection years ago, I understand the benefits of antibiotics but Inflammatory Bowel Disease resulted from the massive amount of antibiotics that were required to cure that infection. Hard to walk that fine line of risk/benefits but the concept requires accepting that this is not an exact equation. All that said, I'm here to continue to control what is in my control: what I eat. I'm relieved to know that my varied high fiber diet will tip the equation in my favor.

Supposedly, if you have a plant dominant diet, your body can recover its microbiome much better than someone who doesn't have a plant dominant diet.

I was on immunotherapy for my breast cancer and had to take antibiotics for a UTI. Entered a state of dysbiosis, and the immunotherapy caused my body to go into overdrive, attacking my pituitary and adrenal functions. Dysbiosis is no joke. I'm desperately trying to restore the gut as soon as I can to heal the brain/adrenals.

I would be interested in an episode with someone who focuses on microbiome development from birth to 3 years. I had 3 different antibiotics when I delivered my son 6 weeks ago. I had a round due to group b strep then two more as I needed an emergency c section (baby flipped to breech the night before). My son started struggling with reflux and difficulty passing gas/pooping shortly after my milk came in. I eliminated a few things from my diet which helped reduce the severity of the reflux. We started a probiotic 4 days ago to try to help with the gas/poop.

29:00 I got C. difficile in November for the first time. I was given 2 rounds of Clindamycin for root canal treatments that had become abscessed. That ruined my gut. I now have IBS and I was so healthy before the C Diff. I had never had any gut issues before the root canal treatments. I finally decided to remove this tooth that ruined my life. Now I’m trying to eat perfectly and take a probiotic daily. (Also educate myself because I am now colonized with the C Diff spores) I am terrified of needing another antibiotic and getting C Diff again!

I think I heard him once say that he'd rather see people eating fermented foods daily because they contain a greater assortment of probiotics and have a better chance of getting through the gastric acids, alive. I don't have a link, but I'm pretty sure I've heard him say that. Good luck with your healing.

One more fermented food that is an absolute superstar is natto. If people can eat broccoli sprouts, they can eat this. I eat my natto doused with kimchi. I’m not a big fan in terms of flavor and consistency. However, the health benefits my husband and I had experienced eating natto is something I cannot afford to pass up. Homemade natto tastes milder than store-bought. Using black soybeans are even milder.

Hi Simon, I love your podcasts! I have a question. How do we know that we are not feeding possible harmful bacteria in our microbiome? How do we diminish harmful bacteria while increasing the beneficial bacteria?
@ellefrizzell5263 Жыл бұрын
Hi I’m a BSc nutritional therapy student, and this is a great question. 1. How do we know that we are not feeding possible harmful bacteria in our microbiome? Harmful/ pathogenic bacteria feed on: alcohol (when drunk in excess), sugar, processed foods, saturated fats (particularly palm/ vegetable oils), trans fat (often in margarine/ spreads), processed meats (sausages, bacon, ham, salami, corned beef). Overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria/ yeast/ fungi, and thus dysbiosis, is associated with a typical Western diet. In other words, a diet high in processed/ ultra processed foods, high in animal fats, high in sugar, low in fibre, and beige (lacking colourful fruit and vegetables). 2. How do we diminish harmful bacteria? To naturally reduce pathogenic bacteria, you can eat antimicrobial foods including: garlic, honey, herbs and spices (especially rosemary, oregano, sage, thyme, fennel, lemongrass, cardamon, clove, turmeric, cinnamon), pumpkin seeds, unrefined coconut oil (consume sparingly), fruit peels (pomegranate or orange peel can be used to make a tea, simply add the peel to hot water), papaya seeds (blend into a smoothie). There are also many antimicrobial supplements with ingredient like: oregano oil, uva ursi (bearberry), black walnut, woodworm, garlic, barberry bark, olive leaf. 3. How to increase the beneficial bacteria? Simply improving your levels of beneficial bacteria will help to crowd out the pathogenic bacteria. Eat a wide variety of plant-based foods (fruit, vegetables, wholegrain, nuts, seeds, legumes, beans, herbs, spices) in all the colours of the rainbow to ensure you are getting plant of fibre in the form of: prebiotics, polyphenols, and resistance starch. Hope this helps, Elle.

I can’t find the daily micro biome nutrition ..does it currently exist?
@AM-wg4ii Жыл бұрын
How do these researches quantify the microbiome? Around the 1hr mark, Dr. B talks about a study where they measure the recovery of the microbiome. Wondering what tests they used to measure the microbiome and degree of recovery. I have heard stool tests are unreliable/a predatory money grab by functional doctors. Also wondering - is there any info on spore based probiotics? Are they better? Or are they dangerous because they’re so long lasting?

Will check for research myself now I'm thinking about it... but would love an expert take on if there's anything about the effect of losing ones teeth on the oral and ultimately gut microbiome. Also if there's any specific measures those who've lost their teeth can take to aid the restoration and maintenance of a healthy gut microbiome (accounting for the fact the oral microbiome is altered). I've live a whole food plant based lifestyle for over a year now, I eat a wide variety of plants from my own food forest - but still... discomfort via wind! 😊

Why are docs still prescribing antibiotics for viral respiratory infections? I know patients demand them because they think that will help them feel better sooner. Wouldn't educating patients rather than pacifying them with an antibiotic Rx be the more prudent response ?

Why do sugar and fried foods affect the colon micro biome? I’d think those foods would be absorbed in the small intestine and wouldn’t even make it to the colon. Or is it just a colon micro biome starvation effect?

I m really confused in hearing about antibiotics usage. I ve got 2 boys of 12 and 7 years old. Older son had plenty of antibiotics and really bad health problems. So, we changed our diet. Whole plant based without junk food, no sugar. We added herbal teas, infusions, dried berry based infusions, healing spices. Prophylactic activities with herbs and berries all the year round. 7 years old son has never had any antibiotics. Also, he was on breast feeding till 2,6y. If any virus or immune system provocation, we don t need any medical help. We use berries and herbs. If something really dangerous happens, we can use systemic enzyme therapy. Never any antibiotics. There is no need in antibiotics. But we all need to be closer to Nature and incorporate its strength into our everyday routine. Herbs, spices, berries.
