What's really sad is that the Met Gala is actually for funding historical fashion preservation because the fashion arm of the Met has to get funds each year to keep going. It's relevant work that has historical and cultural importance, as well as celebrating an art form that we all engage with every day, ie. fashion. They've relied on the celebrity angle so people donate, but the problem is that it's become so about that that most people have no idea what it actually funds and many celebrities use it for less than great purposes. It's one of the reasons that Kim wearing the Monroe dress was extremely insulting both artistically and historically.

Its started long before 2020. Celebrities and the whole industry has been exposed for doing nasty things. From Weinstein to Cosby and Diddy. So many rappers killed in the music industry for decades, and gang/criminal activity. So many child stars and celebrities are destroyed by drug addiction, the crazy plastic surgery turning women into weirdos.. The other thing is the standards/quality of Hollywood and music is very low. Most singers these days mime their "live" concerts. then use twerking asses and softporn to get noticed. Nobody watches TV anymore. Movies are full of woke propaganda, The celebrities who are always talking about diversity and acceptance turn out to treat their own staff like tyrants, like Lizzo or Ellen. The whole industry seems toxic.

I think social media killed celebrity culture. Reasons are 1) it exposes a lot of them because they do a lot of dumb stuff online where as before social media everything was filtered by the media and 2) it created an entire culture of fame hungry influencers that have cheapened the meaning of what it means to be famous because most of them also have no talent just like the Kardashians.

I think the K's just woke a few people up because the sham was so blatant. Many neurodivergent people don't understand the worship of anyone - celebrity, royalty, religious figures etc - it makes absolutely no sense, it's all pretend titles, costume and construct. So we do a lot of observing of human behaviour. I honestly think the celebrity backlash is due to the economic and sociopolitical environment, our loss of hope and fear of the future. If society was to recover it's equilibrium, the worship would be back as well. But that's just a personal opinion.

Yeah, I never cared for Oprah either, or any celebrities who act so entitled or live in a bubble of privilege. Oprah just seems to espouse some pseudo spirituality or pseudo psychology that lacks depth, is shallow and superficial, and promotes kind of a materialistic, consumerist view of life. There are a few celebrities out there who donate much of their wealth to worthy causes, and volunteer their time, energy and talent to help people, and don't forget where they came from and their fans, and show empathy and concern in various ways toward the working class and those who are struggling. Keanu Reeves comes to mind. And Bruce Springsteen. Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Pete Seeger, etc.

More like stifled. Progress could have begun earlier, perhaps even decades ago, but it has been thwarted at every turn by La-La-Land’s cronies in the legal system, press, mayoral offices, state and federal governments. And this massive influence is only possible because they have deep pockets. What’s more, the extent of it is so entrenched that removing all of it will be no simple task. That’s not to say that there is no hope. The fact that people are waking up to it is a good sign. However, cutting out this rot in its entirety is going to be a long uphill battle.

Plus, half the designer items are sold at designer prices while being made in a sweatshop in a poor country by workers who work in inhumane conditions and are paid next to nothing. That's how they are getting richer. The higher-ups have stagnated the salary rise for everyone except the CEOs and board members of companies. This is forcing the majority to buy stuff like homes, cars, etc., in bank installments, which cost double the actual price. It's appalling and disgusting. Then they're giving holier-than-thou advice about environmental destruction, oh we are not providing a phone charger because it'll make the box smaller and less weighty; what do you mean? Buying the charger which comes in a different box, and extra packing, is that not "harming the environment"??? And don't even get me started on planned obsolescence. I feel like gwyneth paltrow didn’t get as much backlash and was even praised in her ski court case because it wasn’t exactly the poor vs the rich, but it was a rich white guy vs rich white woman. It also helped that gwyneth paltrow was authentically herself. She has always branded herself as a rich white woman with goop. It would’ve been disingenuous if she randomly started dressing badly or answered different.

True, but my understanding is that it's generally not the celebrities themselves who pay the ticket price. They are invited by different fashion brands to display their designs. I think it's important to note that the Met Gala is a charity event. It didn't always involve celebrities, that is a fairly recent development. It's a highly publicized event and the optics around the timing were horrible, but it's not the most egregious example, in my opinion. It's just possibly one of the most mediatized. And while we direct most of our ire toward influencers/celebrities, we pay much less attention to the billionaires who do far greater damage (very few artists have that kind of wealth). The ones that can afford to keep a low profile (while maintaining the same standard of living).

Even as a kid, I thought it was ridiculous how that was a scandal. She stole, paid for the items, and went to treatment. Also, the shoplifting only became a thing after she refused Weinstein. They had that dirt on her and pushed it to the news to ruin her. Besides, it is well documented that kleptomania is a form of trying to feel in control. I don’t doubt she was already dealing with the toxic industry and acted out that way.

I think you really hit the nail on the head with the point about celebrities' private lives being overly exposed as a contribution to their downfall. What this made me think of though, is the Kpop industry and how that's defied the trend and continues to foster celebrity worship of its artists among the Western world (and the artists are quite literally called "idols" lol). This is all an aside but IMO, the Kpop industry shows what the American celebrity culture lacks. For one thing, it's very visible that being a Kpop idol requires hard work considering the physical demands of their choreography alone. That's one aspect of the profession that garners them admiration. In contrast, being an actor doesn't really have an immediate visual representation of the level of hard work it takes to do the job. Most effective though, is the sheer amount of extra content showing Kpop idols being normal people, both at work and outside of work. We get to see them learning dances and making mistakes, fooling around in the studio, getting nervous backstage before performances, along with seeing them just talking about random things with each other. We see them stay at AirBnB type places as a group, watching them cook, play board games, eating dinner, walking outside, having life talks... It really makes fans think, "they're like me after all."

Huh, I'm also INFJ but Aries. Seriously, I never fell into that trap much, and that's not intended to humble brag, as a sci-fi nerd it just wasn't my thing. But it's impossible for it to not be on my radar these days, as Kait mentions in her excellent video, and your comment among others here that have said the same, is an attitude toward this celebrity nonsense that I hope spreads. Cheers.

My friend loved Jlo. She got tix to her meet n' greet in N.Y.C. she was treated so badly -( they all were ) standing in the rain for 2 hrs. to meet her...she was 2 hrs .late, refused to meet anyone, and then had an assistant hand- out pre- signed 8×10 glossy's. My friend paid alot. I don't know how much? But she is not a fan anymore. 😢 She tried to get me to go. I'm not a Jlo fan, different genre of music.

I stopped giving 2 shots about what celebrities said or did in my teens when I realized that my life was nothing like theirs. So just because they could pretend really well to care about my wellbeing, it didn’t mean they do. Anyone with an IQ over 5 would never care what they say about anything.

I don’t believe that in the past disparity between celebrities and ordinary people very smaller than today. Back in the 30s ,even in US majority of people didn’t have access to indoor plumbing etc. the major difference was that people didn’t know what Clark Gable has inside his mansion and were he goes on holidays

Totally. Our awareness has changed, so at the very least, it *feels* like there’s a wider gap. Certainly more than when I was growing up in the 90’s. I’d have to really look into economics to determine what the wealth disparity was throughout the 1900’s.

AWWWWW THUMPER SO EEEPY!!!!!! You know it’s hard to be positive in today’s age. As 22yo gen z I feel like my future is looking bleak with how things are going. I want to be able to help everyone and everything but there’s only so much I can do right now. I’m sure that’s how millennials felt or are feeling too. I feel hopeless a lot of the time but it’s moments like these where I see dogs like Thumper that remind me that things will be okay. Something about animals simply just being shows me that there are things to look forward to in life. Thank you for this video Kait*, your video essays are always something that gets me thinking and it helps me feel like I have a lot of purpose to make things right.

I feel terrible for Gen Alpha and Gen Z who have had to grow up in the age of social media, with so much divisiveness and judgment at every corner. On days when I feel hopeless about the future, I remember the work of the civil rights movement and women’s suffragette. Progress is not linear, and it often feels like one step forward, two steps back. While we may not see the changes that we want in our lifetime, the fight is worth staying in, as generations have done before us and will continue to do after us. We have to take it day by day, hug our loved ones and our animals, find gratitude in the little things like reality tv or a great meal, and build community. Focusing on the macro level of federal policies is overwhelming and hopeless, so I’m starting to get involved in local politics, I signed up to volunteer at the humane society, and am looking into ways to directly help the people in my community where I can actually make a difference. One step at a time 💙

Meaning, a president now has the same standing as a king (like Denmark)and will never be held accountable for any of the horrible ish that he does. We're not moving toward it; we're already there! @@katieharris7219 Not well. I oscillate between sadness, numbness, rage, and hyperfixating on election data and political commentary. I'm trying to find where I fit in moving forward. I've been more politically outspoken on Instagram, but it inevitably comes with hate and it's taking a huge toll on my mental health. My partner Jon and I decided that instead of focusing on federal issues, we're going to get involved on the local level by supporting local politics and campaigns, becoming active in our community, and volunteering. I signed up to volunteer at the Humane Society and am looking for a job where I can make some kind of positive impact. I think it will help to affect change in a small way VS screaming into the void on social media and feeling like I'm not actually doing anything to help. How are you doing?

I am so frustrated with the Dems for the lack of foresight and staying in office far too long. (For example, why didn’t they pressure Ginsberg to step down when she had cancer during Obama’s time in office?) The conservative power in the Supreme Court is such a big blow! There needs to be an age limit on how long you can serve. Kamala stepping in because of political pressure against Biden was so last minute. Obviously this country is not ready to vote in a woman, because misogyny seems to be intrinsic in our culture. So not having strong candidates to run against Trump was a huge fail. Sorry but Biden screwed us over because no one wanted to run against an incumbent. Dems need to seriously get their s**t together because I fear conservatives worse than Trump are waiting in the shadows.

As a basic middle class family, whose entire house can fit in the kitchen of many homes in my town, I don’t begrudge how others spend their money, if they WORK for it. The celebrities create films that we watch, the music artists create music, that we listen to. Those are actual jobs. I do think these KZbin/instagram/tik tok people are on a different level. They get FREE items from companies, read a given script, then make millions. They also get lavish FREE vacations, that we can’t even dream of going on. The influencer obsession needs to come to an end.

There is problematic content creators on YT and other platforms but as a culture we are liking the new way of doing things better than the old. Hollywood is continuing to burn while YT creators rise in subscriber numbers, likes, and views. Celebrities are out-of-touch millionaire elitists whereas Jane/John Doe uploading content from their homes while their dog is barking, the phone is ringing, Mom shows up with overbaked cookies, and the new shirt you bought at Target has a stain on it, WE HEART IT! It is relatable in every way. I don't think we are going back to the way things were. We like it here. It's comfy, chill, and a kind of contentment one can't get from heavily edited programming for television.

'Imagine' was never a beautiful song. It is about dystopian mysery and the denial of individuality. As for blaming idols for idolising them, the responsibility lies in quiet cessation of the idoliser. Envy is an ugly thing. Nobody is to blame, just stop doing it. It is a nothing thing. As for Rikki Gervais, he's one of them and they hire him to show that they have self deprecating humour.
