The Downfall of Fortnite's Art Style

That's exactly what I was thinking. Every time someone tells me that "You don't miss old fortnite, it was always that trashy" I just watch some older footage of the game and think to myself that it did look better, it actually was better. It had a unique look and feel to it, and yet it went from being cartoonish to a wannabe semi-realistic graphics that at best has cartoonish accents that don't really make up the majority.

Yea i can tell from experience when i played old fortnite again on project era i found out why i fallen in love with this game, most people were saying i was blinded by nostalgia but the original ui, hud, graphics style and everything was so unique and appealing to me that it was the only game i would like to play but nowadays its just... Correct, but the game didn't dwindle down because of the change in artstlyle though, I think that's an idiotic take, the game went down simply because, it was a bubble, for how many days can Drake play a videogame for that to become not interesting anymore? The game started had a decreasing player count since Season 4 ended and hit it's current average pace in Season X, before any major change to artstyle came, you can check google trends by yourself.

Yes exactly. Some of the original references like the original John Wick did fall into that collaboration content area, but they were stylized to fit within Fortnite. They still kept the charm of Fortnites art.

Bro fortnite chapter 1 season 2 with the christmas lobby and og music with the small item shop that switched every 2/3 days and hopping on a game with amazing graphics and just a slow but anticipating gameplay where everyone wanted the victory royal so bad so they had to play the most secure possible way to obtain it depending on the person... oh and when finding good loot actually did matter and made you feel something surreal that some games can rarely captivate in you... man this is the real fortnite I want and the one that was supposed to stick by in some level, now its just a big old mess that is weird to look at or to attach some emotions to because shit doesnt look or feel authentic anymore

Fortnite is a game i recently got into solely to play with friends, and i have to say, as someone who's primarily played team fortress 2 for most of my life as a gamer, it's very refreshing to see the same sentiment i feel regarding that game in fortnite's own community as well. I won't lie, it is absolutely cool to play as Goku, but, he just doesn't and should not be in fortnite, especially with how he looks, cel shading and all, it's one thing if he was only a character dressed as goku, but for it just straight up BE Goku is ill-fitting not only for the game, but also for goku as a character.

Fortnite’s lack of a modern mascot also hurts it very much. Any kind of advertising or trailer for Fortnite today is either generic and boring or heavily relies on using characters outside of Epics copyright. Iconic Fortnite mascots such as Fishstick, Raven, or Brite bomber are still the face of Fortnite despite being years old. Fortnite’s inability to make recognizable characters today have really hurt the game. Fortnite only makes either boring uninteresting skins, 3rd party characters, or reskins of popular skins. I’ve played this game since season 4 and I’ve noticed the heavy degrading with quality of Fortnite skins and gameplay. Fortnite’s tactic of quantity over quality and lack of originality won’t immediately kill the game but will hurt its longevity.

@@Birds_In_Crime Most appropriate were any that were stylized to fit into Fortnite. Like the original John Wick skin in the Season 3 battlepass. Not necessarily a collab but clearly inspired. I would say all the anime collabs are the most egregious, they clash so hard with the games art style. Anime collab items also always break competitive for the whole season.

I think the primary reason for the massive change in Fortnite's art style to a more generic boring one was because of UE5 since Epic wants to show off the engine to their shareholders and other companies they had to essentially make it as graphically detailed as possible which sacrificed what made the game popular to begin with

I disagree HEAVILY. It has ALWAYS had its own Art Style. Donald Mustard said he wanted Fortnite to sort of like a sandbox where ANYONE and EVERYONE can interact. I also don’t think Fortnite is making the game more realistic so the Collabs “fit in” but more to show off the capabilities of Unreal Engine. And finally, I know they WILL eventually ditch the more realistic style for a more cartoony style, since it reminds players of OG Fortnite, and people EAT UP OG Fortnite.

I still love Fortnite but a strong part if me still misses that unique aesthetic and artsyle which the game had. Chapter 2 season 3 end atleast for me had marked the end of an era of this unique and so loved style after that which each passing season it just felt like the realism took over and in turn it not only made Fortnite into a bildboard for collaborations but also the Unreal Engines capabilitys. This is in turn ruined skin, map and PIO ideas because they all had to be adapted to this new style and you can see how much the artists are struggling to make any good out of this my evidence? Every battlepass original skin after chapter 2 season 3 theyre all an overcomplicated mess with barely no artistic vision in mind they look almost AI generated to me. I loved Fortnites artstyle and I want it to return however Epic is more focused with taking it away like how they recently did with the movement animations theyre was nothing wrong with them originally in fact people liked them however the style has changed from iconic to just a parody of realism which nobody likes

I've been saying and fearing this ever since Chapter 2 Season 5 which I still consider one of the worst seasons since content was non-existent and sacrificed for item shop collabs. I was okay with the Marvel season, since it still kept a balance of identity and collab and I thought it would've been a one time thing. After that I just came to terms that the game would be a collab ridden nonsense and I was okay with that until Chapter 5 when the whole metaverse slop kicked into overdrive, now it just makes me sad to see how detached of its identity the game has become.

This video was great! Many people like to shrug off the criticism surrounding the hyper-realistic push with their art style as simply nostalgia. Many of the current changes with the game no longer feature the same cartoonish aesthetic. While it certainly allows them to create a wider variety of content, it lacks much of the individuality, uniqueness, and creativity that comes with the design of an IP.

i disagree A. The graphics have not become more realistic they have become more detailed, that is the difference, and chapter 4 was incredibly stylized more so then chapter 3 was, and ch5 is based off of European countries, and is of course more detailed but if you look at it, like actually look at it the only truly realistic thing is the lighting which simply adds to the detail of the structures the grass and buildings. it is still very cartoonish the characters are very cartoonish looking my dad who does not play Fortnite still looks at Fortnite and wont play because the graphics are still too cartoonish. B. the collabs ruining or influencing the art style to be more detailed is downright a stupid take in my opinion. almost every single collab skin is redone into Fortnite's style with a few exceptions which usually means significantly less detail on t the skins themselves compared to how they look in other media also i just want everyone to know that even in chapter 1 the amount of collabs it had was unheard of in the gaming industry aside from one other game known as super smash brothers. C. the reason Fortnite has added so much detail to the graphics is primarily because it is the posterchild game of unreal engine. it was originally being developed in ue3 but they switched it over to ue4 to show off ue4 and its capabilities with more dynamic lighting and shading and easier to work with tools chapter one of battle royale is a testament to this since it was made in 2 months initially and Fortnite in ch2 updated to newer versions of ue4 to update the graphics ch3 swapped to ue5 and ch4 finally implemented the ue5 features adding lumen and nanite and virtual shadow maps because of this they decided to increase the amount of detail the graphics had to structures textures and just the geometry in general. also the collabs ruining the art style really goes out the window when you realize half of them are cel shaded anime skins that have absolutely zero impact on Fortnite's art style and direction and the realistic skins are not any more realistic then any ch2 skin aside from like Tom Hollands spider man and Alan wake and again most skins usually are simplified to the Fortnite art style like every single marvel skin in existence except tom hollands spider man, that was a weird skin. 4. if Fortnite didn't change its graphics and didn't change its art direction people would get bored of how it looked the reason Fortnite is still as popular as it is is because of how it changes. don't let the success of a map in a month long season that hadn't been in the game for several years keep you from realizing that nostalgia is a hard as heck drug it can literally bring vigor back into old people and make them feel younger. i have played this game since ch1 early season 2 before tilted was in the game and i was watching content of it since the pre season i have played every season since then with the exception of season 9 and X due to personal life issues and i can safely say that ch1 while amazing in its own right and visually gorgeous wasn't inherently better in terms of art direction than any other chapter of Fortnite and i say this as its still my favorite style. but every version of Fortnite i watch and play is still Fortnite it still plays like Fortnite it still looks like Fortnite and it still feels like Fortnite just a different Fortnite that has changed and continues to change for worse or for better.

First off amazing video, it makes valid points on gaming and how losing it's art style can significantly damage a games reputation. However, I have to disagree. While I think I would have agreed in the past, jumping into reload the textures of everything just kind of looked dull and boring to me. With each new chapter we have gotten insane new updates that overhauled the lighting and made everything look more bright and vibrant. Biome's like the mushroom biome in the vibin' season wouldn't have had the same effect if it weren't for the improvements they have made to the games style and lighting overtime. I think I am enjoying Fortnite more now more than I ever did in chapter one. Also, the cartoony nature of the game is still very present in modern Fortnite. I mean look at skins such as Tex Flamingo or even safety shark. Those are cartoony in nature and really fun skins to play as. Also collaborations can be fun too. I get why people aren't fans of them but it means a lot to people like me when we get to play as ip that we have attached ourselves too and get to show off our fandom to other players. That is just my take on it though.

Disagree on most things but the collaboration skins, Some collabs were fun and cool like the doom skin, the spiderman web tool and Gwen skin, I enjoyed those stuff, but making a whole ass battlepass and season off of marvel??? That was too much, no idea what Donald was thinking. But thankfully it looks like epic is calming down, keeping it to one collab skin per battlepass, I honestly don't mind that and think it's cool, it's a good way to keep things fresh and keep people guessing what the next collab would be. I also disagree with you on the graphics. I think the mend of realistic but cartoony style they have is really a beauty, sometimes I would crank the settings up for a game or two despite the performance drop at the start of every season just to really appreciate how beautiful the game looks.

Let's hope that's still the case when they go full on UE5 and some players are forced to buy a new graphics card just to play what used to be a very simple approach. They're also planning on increasing the player lobbies to 200 players. I personally think a lot of people will move on at this point. Just my two cents.

I’ve been saying this omg. So glad people are picking up on this. Why do we need so much photo realism, and realistic (projectile+bullet drop) guns?? Like I downloaded this game in season five was because it looked fun and it WAS. Chapter 1 and early 2 were way better than the gigaslop we get now. Tim Sweeney wants Oasis, but the people want fortnite. He just doesn’t get that. Reload is like a slap in the face to me. They saw Og’s success and instead of taking it to heart for future content in the MAIN game, they just said “oh you like chapter one? Look, you can have this bastardized version of it! Just keep playing our game so the investors will think people like what we’re doing!” If chapter 6 isn’t more simplistic, (which based on leaks it definitely won’t be) there’s a small chance it’ll get better, but the chances are low. Fortnite will die, and I think Donald Mustard knew. If you believe that Geno’s last words were meant to be Donald’s to Tim, he really did hope Tim was right, because he knew it could all fail otherwise. 4:58 This is just blatantly misinformed. Chapter 2 Season 4 and Chapter 5 Season 4 are the only Fortnite seasons to have ever been themed around a crossover with another IP. The rest have indeed included collaborations, but in most instances, they never played a prominent role in the season or in the storyline. The closest we've got to that was the appearance of Marvel characters in C3:S2 and Optimus Prime in C4:S3. No hate towards you or the video, I just think the way you phrased this made the issue sound worse than it actually is to get a point across.

I do respect your opinion, but my own thoughts are that chapter 1, 2 and 3 were great, chapter 4 wasn't the best, and chapter 5 is pretty good. I agree on the art style, but some collabs are cool and bring both myself and many to the game.

Fortnite has lost it's indentity Reload and OG are the only parts of Fortnite's cartoonish style left I hope ch6 solves the issues of ch5 ch5 has brought some things we didn't like first it brought realistic graphics, next bad movement, next cluttered shops, and next removing cosmetic rarities oh and the end of ch4 s4 brought a new UI for the lobby and the new UI is very bad but also in Fortnite OG age ratings began and it affected cosmetics many skins with weapons on them couldn't be used in E for everyone experiences and Fortnite made 2 tweets about the age rating and the 2nd tweet they listened you could use any skin in the Big Bang event and in ch5 all skins that had weapons on them could be used in all experiences as in E for everyone experiences the weapons on the skins were removed and also now Fortnite can't represent guns in their keyart when loading up the game the Metaverse is a good idea its just I wish Fortnite did it Donald Mustard's way cause Donald came up with the Metaverse and Donald was speaking facts when he said live events are the magic of Fortnite but now we only get mini live events every season and yes they are exciting but not as exciting as actual story live events and we only get 1 real live event every year which is probably just an advertisement for the Metaverse now Charlie Wen has done a great job on ch5's story but the real story events are lacking like we could have had an actual live event in ch5 s1 to save Peely, ch5 s2 we could have had an epic fight against Zeus, ch5 s3 the current season we could have had an epic fight against Megalo Don, and next season being Fortnite's 2nd Marvel season we could have an epic fight against Dr. Doom and most likely the Wanderer and then ch2 OG we have another fight with The Last Reality and the Nothing makes his appearance and then after that the island flips and shows ch6 and then after that the Metaverse can then be advertised

The only collab related thing on the islands during those seasons were a poi and one or two mythics also can you please tell me WHEN THE FUCK DID A SECRET SKIN CHANGED OR DID SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT IN THE LORE? Just because it is bright and stylized doesn't mean it is childish. Team Fortress 2 is also bright and stylized. These games are unique and have much more character than all of these CoD clones.
