Wouldn't call it a downfall, their profits were increasing massively before the pandemic, and are recovering from that now too. Maybe downfall in terms of service quality but business wise they are a very profitable company. But Lufthansa definitely isn't the pride of Germany, that's true. The one thing I am really mad about is how they treat their staff. Instead of paying them more, they just found new companies in Malta with less pay and benefits and then just move their employees to there (simplified explanation). Eurowings Europe and Discover are examples for such companies created with the only purpose to cut employee wages.

I was a flight instructor for Lufthansa in the 1970s at their Phoenix-Litchfield operation. it was all first class, no cutting corners. Easiest job I ever had because new pilots were always well prepared and organized. Lufthansa’s Frankfurt operations was very impressive...a currency exchange for every country they served. ..stewardesses from all major countries so they could speak their native language to passengers to all destinations..... I flew on Lufthansa many times and had great experiences so this is discouraging news. some managers have no understanding of customer service oriented businesses. They are clueless/ruthless bean counters. Scum like Frank Lorenzo back in the 1980s. After deregulation and the start up of discount carriers the industry changed for the worse. I retired from American Airlines.

I’ve flown American Airlines for my vacations while growing up and while I was an adult, the staff are always polite, friendly, and professional, delay or not I always enjoyed the flights on that airline, the free drinks, the comfortable haeco seats, and of course the free carry on bags. I as a german am ashamed of Lufthansa and a lot of German friends of mine are ashamed of them aswell! They were the beloved star in the sky of European Airlines, and one of the best in the world. Not only do they have the staff shortages but they lack in service nowadays. I remember flying from Dusseldorf to Vienna (1:10 h duration) with them a few years ago and I remember having the choice between two sandwiches and a desert. In Economy class! Today you can hope to get atleast a bottle of water an a chocolate! On long haul flights it is the same. You only have the choice of one meal and one cold sandwich upon landing. Five years ago they still served hot meals after takeoff, a cold snack during the flight and another hot meal before landing. You even had two choices every time! Also the cabins are outdated especially the business class product. Everytime I see a video from a renowned aviation reviewer (NonstopDan, WinginIt Paul Lucas…) it is certainly always negative and that is of course for a reason! Also for the price they are charging this is even more unacceptable. I mean Lufthansa is among the most expensive airline in Europe and with that one of the worst. Nothing, like really nothing when flying Lufthansa rectifies for the staggering price you paid! KLM for example is as expensive as Lufthansa aswell but they still offer amazing service and they are my favorite airline and now my first choice when flying. Lufthansa once had that spot…

To reply to your tweet, me as a person who has flown Austrian, which is also a part of the Lufthansa Group, is also ashamed all because of Lufthansa. On Austrian flying long haul you could pay extra with their DO and CO catering service for a better meal. They were worth it, but ever since the beginning of 2021 it all stopped. Since then both Austrian and Lufthansa had gone belly up. I mean you could pay extra for big meals even on routes around Europe, now you pay the same price for barely half the DO and CO portion. Honestly I have lost my respect to the Lufthansa Group all together. Still, SWISS still runs strong for me.

@@yxmiavia767 I have flown on Austrian a few times in the past aswell and I enjoyed them. Sadly, indeed the entire Lufthansa group has experienced a downfall in Quality. There are a few ones who are still trying to maintain that beloved quality like you mentioned SWISS although they all suck nowadays… I don’t know if I would call the Lufthansa Group premium anymore, but TAP Air Portugal is quite good on long haul, with good quality meals and one of the newest cabin products on their A330neo‘s and A321lr‘s… I think flying with anything but the „European Star Alliance Partners“ is a good option here especially considering that although some of these airlines also lost some of the quality they once had OneWorld and SkyTeam „premium“ airlines in europe have more reasonable prices and often better service especially the Airfrance&KLM group wich is still going strong and in my opinion the best airline-duo in europe by far!

I appreciate this video very much. I have a long gripe with Lufthansa at this point, which is why I don't fly them. I worked for two international divisions of LH at some point, but not in positions that really interested me. During my time in those positions, even though I had dreamed for a long time to work for this airline, I found, after I got the position that the company felt really dead. There was absolutely nothing there after I got in. It was just a corporation. On the other hand, there was one position (or two) within Germany that I had interviewed for for years, but always was turned down for. What I found extreme was the level of difficulty at these interviews for these (rather simple) positions. When interviewing with them and or doing research about working for them, I was faced with really strange backward attitudes and expectations that were always at least 10 years behind any of its US counterparts. I don't really want to go into too many details, but culturally speaking, Lufthansa has always been way behind in social awareness matters involving gay and women's rights. One particular example that disturbed me, was their attitude that they kept towards HIV positive people. When US carries dropped discrimination against HIV positive people, I assume about the middle of the 90's, Lufthansa vehemently defended its decision to stand by a NO-HIV new-hires, well into the 2000s. The backwardness of the actual corporation is something that I find interesting. It permeates til this day in their day to day operation. The next thing that disturbed me was comments made during the interviews regarding language capabilities. This I experienced in the early 2000, when I was already working for a US carrier and living in the US, yet still, just for the fun of it, giving it a try to see what happens. My impression is that if you didn't speak 110% German, at a C2 level, you were not qualified for the job. They didn't take into consideration that the person in front of them didn't reside in Germany for over 20 years. The comments really were out of line and offensive, with them telling me in my face that my German sounded street-like. In my estimation, my German gravitates between B2 and C1 - but still not enough for LH. It was for example expected that you know that a white horse is called a Schimmel. I was completely baffled though about the prospects of running into a situation at the airport or on the plane where I would have to know that I was dealing with a Schimmel (a white horse). But going back even further, back to the 90s, I recall also the following: They used to call the interview process (and actually still refer to it in writing on their website) as a PSYCHOLOGISCHE EIGNUNGSUNTERSUCHUNG. A process where, in the end, they decide if you are psychologically inept to work for an airline. In their subsequent rejection letters they did not mince words and actually wrote exactly that in the text - that you were psychologically inept for the applied position. Yikes Ya gotta love that direct punch in the gut German finesse. In some of the interviews, they used to line up the psychologists and psychiatrists that were about to do the interview with you, with one after another introducing themselves as a highly qualified crazy-people-identifier. They really put a lot of emphasis in letting you know that if you were "CRAZY" that they were going to find out about it and not let you into the company. It made me feel in the end, that maybe I was really crazy for continuing to subject myself to their insanity. Luckily I was still hired by other airlines that they did not deem me crazy, and yet, they still managed to hire that Andreas Lubitz guy, twice, once as a flight attendant and the second time as a pilot who flew a plane into the mountain. The final straw came for me in 2018 where they made a huge fuss at the MUC airport over my American crew member carry-on bag. The level of psychopathy that I personally experienced made me completely abandon LH as a paying customer. The only other carrier that I have refused to purchase tickets on successfully for over 25 years is UNITED. They were the first one on my boycott list. Lufthansa is the second one - given all the aforementioned reasons.

Even though this is an older video, I decided to post my most recent experience with them. I am a German and was supposed to take a flight from munich to luxemburg that was annulled last minute due to weather conditions, which is a good thing and all the passangers were helped to hotel stays and transport was continued the following day. But that day, instead of just putting me on another flight to Luxemburg they made me go there via Amsterdam and I missed the connection because the first plane they choose was late. There wasn't even an hour between both flights from the beginning and I wasn't able to check the second flight in online, so even on time this choice would have been difficult for any traveller, but the second flight was already of the ground when the first landed, so it didn' matter either way. They have not a single person to talk to and solve things with on the ground in Amsterdam and I had 5! talks with different hotline people with no solution, 3 talks where interrupted without anyone ever calling me back and I got stuck in Amsterdam because they wanted to fly me to Luxemburg via another 1 stop flight and an in the middle of the night arrival. I missed the first part of my seminar, that I have to start over now, even though there where several direct flights from Munich AND later from Amsterdam and they just kept wasting my time and left me stuck in Amsterdam in the middle of high tourist season. I told them that I couldn't even travel home (I live on an island on the coast of Germany, no more boats for the day if I would have travelled there I would have had to find a hotel for the night as well). Luckily I found a hotel room that was clean and I will go home today, but they completely neglected our contract just "because". I have high costs because of the unneccessary delays, lost 3 whole vacation days for nothing, have to do the modul of the seminar again, had to pay for part of my already paid hotel at my actual destination and had to rebook other travel parts twice and than cancel them anyways. Just because what, they tried to find the cheapest option for themselves with no concern for my time and our actual contract? One of the call center people actually said it was my fault for taking the plane to Amsterdam that THEY rebooked me on. Well Lufthansa, I apologize for assuming that you are in fact trustworthy and that I would be in good hands, I lived in another country for 17 years, to me you were still that. Thanks for teaching me the hard way that you are not worthy of your own name anymore. Unbelievable. This could have totally worked out okay for me and Lufthansa, I would have been a little late to my destination but could have made up the time, now it all is just an expensive waste for no output at all. It seems that the entire airline industry is in a race to the bottom, and has been for quite awhile now. If every airline becomes a low-cost carrier, the industry will devolve into large fleets of cattle cars with almost no service - and not every airlines can operate effectively as a low-cost carrier. In Lufthansa's and Quantas' cases, they seem to be run by management that is disconnected from what their customers want and have valued in the past, and they have made some stupid decisions that are now biting them in the backside. It won't be the first time that clueless, profit-focused management have ruined a company and flown it right into the ground, and it certainly isn't limited to airlines. The only way to right faltering ships like this is to GET RID of the clueless management en masse, and replace it with management that knows what it's doing and will run the company in a solid, responsible manner. But, that often is not done in time to save the company, and in many cases is never done at all. Very sad.

It seems like some large airline companies have chosen to “cut corners” to increase their bottom line in profits and think that their customers will not notice or just accept these regretful decisions. You would understand that direction with companies like Air Asia, Cebu Pacific, etc...but not with organisations of the likes of Philippine Airlines. I recently had an unfortunate experience with them and can see things going “pear shaped” in the future unless they change their attitude and pull their “ heads out of their arses“ to fix and consider their customers first when making changes to “ flight times including cancellation of those” /“seating arrangements”/“boarding times and location of boarding gates being advertised”/ “food being of sub standard quality”/“staff not listening to customers requests or complaints” and just smiling and nodding their heads stupidly......I could go on endlessly. Let’s hope someone with understanding fixes these areas of issues and others before they crash and burn out of existence.

They get too scared by the morons that take to social media that demand ULCC carriers, not realizing their bread and butter business travellers stay quiet because they were satisfied, all along. They make these stupid changes, thinking they were making “all the right moves”, only to find out they listened too closely to the riff raff. Lufthansa is not the only airline making these rookie mistakes, you could replace “Lufthansa” with a number of different airlines in this video and it applies the same. Too many people came out of the stupid, destructive lockdowns, forgetting how to airline.

I have a colleague who works at Lufthansa Technik, his position is jr mech. He started working about last quarter of 2018, so for almost 4 yrs he is still jr mech. He told me that him and his team are very frustrated of the lack of trainings, recognitions or promotions for the service and dedication they proved for the company for all this years. As for me I'm one of those employees who have been lay off cause of "cutting cost operation" 😔.

A bit over ambitious, but that's normal with big airlines... On the other hand lots deoended on the trade unions with their high wages etc.
@jamesau4296 Жыл бұрын
over ambitious---true, wanted to compete with ME3 or Asian Airlines with a higher overhead burden than theirs. You can't blame flight attendants in Germany(Perhaps all of Europe and the USA) for not being willing to work harder or accept lower salaries when they have much better employment opportunities than working as a fast food restaurant waitress in the sky. While ME3 is allowed to take migrant workers from developing countries in their countries.

This is really quite sad, especially for a retired LH employee like me. The management has put profits ahead of good service and the people who pay a lot to fly with LH. We all know that profit is important, but not to the point where it makes your employees and passengers unhappy. They had better get back to basics over this winter if they expect a busy summer in 2023.

Alongside Lufthansa taking the brunt, Eurowings (the low cost airline which operates under the Lufthansa) is ridiculously expensive. A 90 minute return trip to Düsseldorf can cost in excess of £300 for two pax. It’s ridiculous.

@@johniii8147 Agree. After all it took around six years for BA to fit those flat Club World seats from year 2000. Consolation with LH is that it has that superior J class seating on a number of 787s (from Hainan) and ex-PAL A350s.

I was proud to fly Lufthansa before pandemic. now they are so stingy. in figuht snacks are gone, everyone gets pasta in economy. if you don't like it you can buy a tiny pretzel bag for 2€. I prefer now to fly United. and that says it all. MUC to LAX is flown by Lufthansa and sucks. you get a shitty meal at take off and a bottle of water and then a muffin before landing. that's it. united from MUC to SFO is letter in economy than Lufthansa premium economy. during the entire flights the united crew came and brought refreshments and snacks. I'm now trying to book all my intercontinental flight with United even with a layover. Lufthansa sucks

What a lurid and lousy „analysis“. „Loyal travellers“ are not those who fly airlines as KZbinrs but the millions of passengers like me who use airlines like Lufthansa on a regular basis, especially for flights within Europe. I won't say Lufthansa is the number 1 luxirious airline in Europe - but which airline nowadays does not have to face problems?Thus, I can only laugh being told by a busybody Australian that Lufthansa experiences a „downfall“.
