They should have started a new trilogy with Black Beard as the villain throughout and just have him be a regular pirate. Black Beard is actually a character that we have information on from real life so why not build off of that? Have him be towering over the other pirates, lighting his beard on fire, being a savvy business man and maybe even stabbing the pirate council in the back, blowing them all up (except our heroes of course). Instead we got a guy with a magical sword and a zombie crew

Elizabeth had 3 men fighting for her in the 3 way battle with norrignton on the water wheel, I think that’s what makes pirates 2 so memorable and my favorite, that 3 way battle is so creative

The shortest answer to the 'why' is 'Hollywood studios (all of them) are controlled by the finance advisors and they want the safe option, which is to stay with IPs that have proven financially successful in the past.' That is why we get loads of Marvel each year and Disney keeps doing their live-action remakes of their animation catalogue. Hollywood is not taking the risk that would be making something new - they leave that to small studios and buy the IP if it proves to be good.

Its also because, new films use almost exclusively CGI, where these used the actors face blended into the CGI as references. Also the fact that the characters is basically designed to look good in CGI, non-Human wet and shiny is all of CGI’s strengths.

I too love the first three films, and I always liked the 4th one as well. But 5 was so disappointing that I’m still not over it. Though I guess when you’re a long time fan that might seem normal for most people.

As for me, I've personally liked 4 of the pirates of the Caribbean movies, but i really love pirates of the Caribbean at worlds end. I still have all 5 on Blu-ray.

At world's end is a masterpiece. I had dead man's chest on Dvd and used to watch it all the time genuinely a Masterpiece. They should do a prequel involving younger versions of all the characters.

The films had pretty long gaps. 2003 - 2006 - 2007 original trilogy 2011 - 2017 the later films.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is definitely the worst one in the Pirates franchise for me (and that hurts, since i've been a fan of the PotC since 2006), and it goes beyond just Johnny Depp's off-portrayal of Jack Sparrow, since the film isn't even written by either Ted Elliot or Terry Rossio. Rossio wrote a completely different script for the film back in 2012 (which i've read several times by this point, and man, does it feel like a better movie in comparison), but it was rejected mainly because it featured a female villain, and another film Depp was starring in at that time, Dark Shadows, also had a female villain in it, and he thought it would be redundant. Jeff Nathanson, the guy who wrote the final version of the film, basically made a soft-reboot film that ended up retconing much of the franchise's lore

I disliked what Jeff Nathanson did for this movie. He seems like a nice guy, but I’ve struggled to forgive him for what he did to Jack Sparrow, and his entire script just felt like one big parody with no real purpose but to mock and insult the franchise, and even worse, its fans. And it didn’t help that the directors did just as poorly with making this movie, and the whole cast just looked like they didn’t want to be there. It’s so incredibly frustrating. But hey, at least we have the first four right?

I've watched the original 4 films dozens of times over the years, and i can always pretend we live in a world where Rossio's script was turned into a film, and we got Dead Men Tell No Tales we should have. Nathanson does seem like a nice guy, but it seems like he's generally the guy hired to write a reboot of a film or something, since he also wrote the Lion King live-action remake

I think if the 4th and 5th Pirates films didn't exist people would be looking back on this franchise a lot more fondly. Those first three films really were fantastic, and it should've just stayed a trilogy. People seem to forget these days that this franchise basically singlehandedly rekindled public interest in the pirate genre during the 2000s, all on its own. It was a big deal. ...This might sound like a weird idea (and I know it'll never happen) but I think this franchise would actually lend itself really well to animation. Disney doesn't really dabble much in animation aimed at a PG-14 audience, but I think something like that could breathe new life into a franchise that's no longer working in its current state.

The compass doesn’t point to Jack because he’s what Elizabeth wants, it points to Jack to reaffirm to her and the audience that he’s the way to get back to Will.

I read something online that may or may not be true regarding Gore Verbinski the director of pirates 1 thru 3 that he stated after the 3rd instalment that was it for his story. Disney of course who is a money hungry juggernaut wanted the franchise to keep going but verbinski didn’t want to return as director, thus showing that pirates 4 and 5 were complete downfalls, Altho I have rewatched them a couple times in recent years cuz it’s pirates and I like the action, but the trilogy will always be goated and my favourite of them all

For me, 5 easily is the worst of the entire franchise. Yes 4 has a lot of problems and feels like a side quest, but at least it does understand its characters. 5's complete misunderstanding of Jack Sparrow as a character is just baffling, especially coming from one of the original writers. As you said about the first film, Jack's core character trait is his ability to think out of any situation he finds himself in. Jack in the 5th movie couldn't think his way out of a paper back. Jack always played the fool in the first 4 movies in order to disarm the people around him and manipulate them to do what he wants. The 3rd movie being the pinnacle of his manipulations getting everyone exactly where he wants them when he wants them there. The 5th movie Jack is a drunk that relies on sheer dumb luck to get his way, the only way he survives the guillotine scene is through Disney's Goofy's levels of dumb luck. The Jack of the first 4 movies would never have gotten into the guillotine in the first place.

It would've been nice if they took On Stranger Tides & stretched it out to be a trilogy, focusing on Ian McShane as the antagonist & building Blackbeard and Angelica up over the 3 films, and as part of that maybe use Will & Elizabeth's son as one of the characters in a similar role as Will was initially. If you did it this way you could also build up the Spanish more as they were incredibly powerful in the Caribbean for much of the age of exploration but the first 3 films focused entirely on the British navy. I don't have any specific ideas for how to execute this, but with something as significant as the Fountain of Youth I think you could justify 2 movies of build up to finding it, and maybe you could justify using its power as a way to free Will from the Flying Dutchman as the power of eternal youth might off-set the death that would be caused by him quitting the Dutchman or something, I ain't a writer but I think you could make something happen there pretty convincingly.

I actually saw Get Him to the Greek pop-up in reference somewhere, and I totally forgot that movie existed, but I was like, "Holy shit, that was a whole cast of trash."

Most filmsshould just stop as trilogies, and pirates is a prime example of that. 1,2 and 3 connect up together pretty nicely, and by the time the 4th comes around, it's almost like they tried to reset. Not everything needs a fourth and fifth, star wars certainly didn't need another trilogy, and rumours of another? Oh dear

I never grew up with these movies but I recently watched them with my family and I became obssessed with the trilogy!! I absolutely adore them, it's such a shame the direction it went after them....... I'm biased because I am an animator, but I'm surprised there hasn't yet been an animated series!! (well, not so surprising with the state the animation industry is right now) I would absolutely love to see one! It doesn't have to have the same characters as always, they could be new but based in the same universe..... Wasted opportunity in my opinion!

I'd say some of the reasons why 4 and 5 failed is because it's missing our Goofy Goobers, Pintel and Raggetti! I'm so glad that in the Lego game, I can play as them in Stranger Tides as I please. I found it kind of sweet that Barbossa had a daughter and probably other kids that he's not aware of, but his sacrifice was like a symbol of the death of the POTC movies. And I don't know if it irks anyone else, but I feel like the Black Pearl looked smaller in part 5. And it really annoyed me as I watched it that one time only. Seeing Jack hold The Pearl up like a model ship is like me with my Mega Bloks Black Pearl (Which I still Have). And having it thrown into the sea didn't make it as big as the OG ship. It's really sad to see this happen to my favorite franchise. POTC was probably my first movie I ever saw when I was a child and it shaped me into the young man I am now. They need to apologize to Depp and fix this now.

I actually quite like On Stranger Tides but I do hate the mermaid romance side plot. I'd rank them: 1. Curse of the Black Pearl 2. Dead Man's Chest 3. On Stranger Tides 4. At World's End 5. Dead Men Tell No Tales (this one is a massive jump down from the others)

Unpopular opinions: 1. I hated the trilogy finale. While the maelstorm was nice - 2 fleets showing up to the battle to do nothing at all but a staredown was disapointing at least. 2. I cant remember anything from 4. And I still hate everything about it. 3. The first time I saw 5 I was so into Salazar, because I liked the Idea that getting cursed wasnt a pirate previledge. Imo it really was innovative to the story overall and added depth to the worldbuilding. But on a second view I couldnt oversee salazars weak motivation and the whole children problem from being unlikeable to not fitting into the cast at all.

The first 2 are amazing in my opinion, the third film is kinda a downgrade but still enjoyable (i mainly liked any scene with jack and Barbossa and davy jones), thr 4th one is enjoyable but feels slightly off....at least it felt like a pirates of the caribbean film, where the 5th film was so abysmal that i never want Disney to continue this franchise

Forgive me but I really liked parts of the 5th one. They needed much better casting for the main leads. The villian was terrifying but somehow still funny loved the back story and to see consequences of Jack being Jack. Though yes Barbossa and Jack felt off. I also liked the final act setting way too much. I had no clue where they were going with that one but to me it felt so much like a Pirates mid act finale. Hated that the killed off Barbossa tho, there was no need for that. I also really like the idea of Barbossa’s kid and Elizabeth’s kid getting together. Mostly because I was always touched how Elizabeth was almost a protege of Barbossa’s in a way.

I did not care for the Davy Jones and the East India Company storyline. 4 and 5 I found more enjoyable because they were more simple pirate adventures. Blackbeard was really good and I have a soft spot for 5 for giving Barbosa so much spotlight

Unfortunately, while the CGI is incredible in these films, especially Davy Jones, it was the start of severe crunch culture in the animation industry. Many animators cite the 2nd film as causing so much distress based on the terrible deadlines forced on them by supervisors. This has directly continued into today’s films, which leads to shorter deadlines and shoddier final products, which explains why so many modernly look flat.

19:13 im not really sure whats being implied here. JD won the AH vs JD case and i followed it quite closely since it was livestreamed and it was proved that AH was defamining JD all this time. The article you showed is about JD vs sun newspaper, not AH. Disney just believed AH and decided to boot him out, and JD has stated that no matter how much or what ever Disney would offer he would not be returning to Pirates of the caribbean.

@@cainvarner its only "ruined" among a vocal minority of terminally online people who made the AH v JD case into some sort of "me too" hill to die on. A lot of hollywood big wigs were begging him to return to projects they removed him from and he basically told them to fuck off. Since then a lot of writers and directors have been trying to work with him but he has been refusing work where people involved knowingly spread lies and talked shit about him during that case.

but there are still lots of people who do not believe him and so yes. his reputation is most definitely ruined. as much as we loved him in his previous films, he’s not ever coming back. it’s been years since he’s had a hit anyway and so that paired with the UK trial finding him guilty of being a wife beater means no one’s willing to chance it at this point.

I genuinely hate the fifth film. The it is shocking, the script is so awful theres over the top humour thrown into scenes with the crew that just make it feel like its some parady film and makes them all look stupid. Jack is just not jack hes an idiot he just stumbles around after everyone, imagine if you showed someone this film first then the first film they wouldnt beleive it was the same character. It disregards the established backstory from other films and henry and carrina are just boring with nothing between them

Okay, so, here are two pieces of (hopefully) constructive criticism: Firstly, you really need to run a find-and-replace for at least like 2/3 of the uses of the word "film" in this script. It's way too much as it is and would only help to spice up the wording more. Secondly, you don't need to say "in my opinion" so much (see "subjectivity is implied"). Besides that, great video. I'm definitely subscribing. :)

If they were to do another one. Honestly I would rather have a spin off instead of a continuation of the story we know. I love Jack Sparrow and especially Johnny. But that story is done and so (IMO) is Jacks.

well yeah…his career has been permanently ruined because of 2 very high profile cases, of which, one found him guilty of being a wife beater… i’d say his public image isn’t clean after that

@saltywater5097 i’m no law student, but he was found guilty in the UK, many will see that and the very messy case, plus shared texts with other actors and still believe johnny is a wife beater. even though he “proved” that she had lied about some things, the first court case in the UK still proved him to be a wife beater. i don’t really care as much as everyone else though, so i wasn’t exactly paying that close of attention, could be wrong. but the point is, him claiming that she lied doesn’t inherently prove that he’s not a wife beater

the only thing i liked about the 4th film was penelope cruz that’s about it, the rest is not that great so i didn’t even bother watching the 5th but the first 3 films will always be iconic even if i no longer support johnny depp

I hated the 5th film and will always consider the original trilogy to be the canon. The rest are just bad fanfics. Also, WHY would you put the PIRATE KING *back* in a dress??? Absolutely preposterous. Edited to fix typo.

Major Problems started with 3 not 4, the third act goes off the rails, a marriage ceremony in the middle of a bloated 1 hour long third act of to much action
