People talk shit about "filler" but that was genuinely one of the best episodes of Dragon Ball in it's entirety. Toriyama and his team have such a unique sense of humor, and it barely comes through at all post-King Piccolo. The Super anime in general seemed to have a lot of fun with the production despite it's problems, the idea of bringing Brian Drummond back for stupid purple goo vegeta is really cool, I'm sure he loved doing it.

I always viewed Goku as less of a "good person/hero for the sake of justice" and more of "I just want to have fun and I don't want bad things to happen to my friends"

This is pretty much exactly what Toriyama means. The translation is a bit off, but from especially from a Japanese perspective a Hero(tm) is traditionally selfless person who doesn't seek conflict except to help others, and thinks deeply and is conflicted about doing so. Trunks or especially post-Cell Saga Gohan are way closer to that traditional view of classic shounen heroes. This doesn't make Goku is a BAD person morally -- he's more a Fool-type character, in the literary sense, not wishing ill will on people and takes life as it comes -- but he's too innocent and not very thoughtful or proactive to the future (hence why Chichi has to boss him around) in a lot of ways. Most of his friends get he never MEANS to sound like an asshole, but he can be frustrating. Think in the way a little kid can be annoying to an adult without intending to.

Among them was "canal cino" they show dragon ball in its entirety. I remember seeing goku taking blumas panties off and I was like 8 years old at the time. Actually the series ending at the Cell saga was a myth. Akira Toriyama never confirmed that. My theory is that it was made by butthurt fans that either didn’t like the Buu saga or wanted Gohan to remain the hero. But Toriyama didn’t make Gohan the hero again because Gohan doesn’t like fighting. He only does it in defense of himself and others. Cell saga/Gohan fanboys really need to get over it.

Being French, I'm used to the AB dub and the French dub isn't that bad, like Piccolo is named Petit Cœur (which mean little heart) but it actually makes sense, especially for French people as Piccolo doesn't mean anything in French, and the pronunciation is different but not that far from Piccolo as it is pronounced puh-tee cuh-r but it is quite weird that they went with warrior instead of saiyen. But as you can see there are no good reasons, even with that, to explain why the Portuguese dub chose to go with Big Green 💀

Something you said about the Big Green dub sounds quite familiar. "Every single attack that Goku does is a kamehameha" and "saiyans are now just warriors, and super saiyans are super warriors". For some reason, some European dubs shared either one or both of those traits. In Spain, for example, the kamehameha was renamed as "onda vital" (lifeforce wave), and every fucking thing became a lifeforce wave unless an even more stupid name was used for a single instance (like Infinite Light lol). I think we got that from the Italian dub (which called it Onda energetica)? But I'm not too sure. We also got saiyans renamed as "guerreros del espacio" (warriors from space), with super saiyans becoming "súper guerreros" (super warriors). Sounds familiar? That shit came from the French dub, with the Galician dub adding more mistakes between the Spanish and French ones. Anime/cartoon dubbing wasn't taken seriously in the 80's and 90's in Spain, so DB and DBZ got treated quite badly, just like in some English dubs. It's said that scripts were translated each from a different language, so translation and localization must have been a nightmare.

Goku is surely not a good father when compared to human society standard, but he is not the worst father either. His saiyan biology plays a huge role in this. He loves to train and fight strong enemies, to the point he can hardly focus on other things, but since he was raised by humans he learned how to show some affection in his own personal way. (For example, he NEVER disrespected his friends and gladly helped them when needed) ...which compared to Saiyans who used to send away their newborns when they were born "lowclass"...it's something! Actually Toei did push to try to have Gohan made the main focus of DBZ, with the studio even pitching titles that included Gohan's name in the title. Due to wanting a kid hero because "The first show had a kid hero!" Toriyama refused, but Toei still tried to advertise it as "The Gohan Show" in Japan, and the original run (as well as some latter dubbings) had various shorts placed in many of the earlier episodes of Gohan in a chibi style going off on musical adventures with Piccolo and his pet dragon Icarus. Most dubs removed these segments as they're pointless, contribute nothing to the plot, and are just downright confusing... Though Funimations "DBZ Uncut" dub added them back in. Personally I think removing them was the right call as I tried to watch the Frieza Saga this way, and it's just so painful to be in this serious moment of Frieza killing people and talking shit, and then suddenly we have this weird Chinese music video of Gohan and Icarus marching around, and then we're back to Namek as if nothing happened... It's also worth nothing The character of Icarus from these shorts was never an actual character in the show, just a cute little mascot for Gohan to play off of for these segments, but the movies "Lord Slug" "Return of Cooler" and "Tree of Might" do feature appearances from Icarus outside of the shorts, and in the Buu Saga there is a filler episode where Gohan as Saiyaman saves a small dinosaur from performing in a circus where he comments that the dinosaur "reminds him of Icarus", complete with a flashback of movie stock footage. I do not know if these Gohan/Piccolo/Icarus shorts are in Kai as I stick with the uncut dub in most rewatches of the show, as there's quite a few filler arcs I actually enjoy, namely Fake Namek (yes, I LIKE Fake Namek), and the Otherworld Tournament. This might be what the "Gohan was the lead character" part of the iceberg meant.

My dude, I get that you have nostalgia for it, but the Ocean Dub was ... it really dumbed down the storyline of early DBZ, and I don't miss it that much. I grew up with the FUNimation dub because that's the one Australia screened from Freeza to the end of the series. That's nostalgia for me. Yes, I know it wasn't always great, but I liked it. They're literally one of the reasons I'm still a Dragon Ball fan twenty years later. Freeza's chilling cackle still makes me shudder to this day.
