Did anyone else notice the parallels between Viren turning to stone and Avizandum? The out stretched arm, the slow, creeping stone, the last teardrop as the spell completes. That can’t be accidental, it has to be foreshadowing something. Perhaps Viren will betray Aaravos to save Soren (or try to convince him to come back to their side) and Aaravos will destroy him once he’s no longer useful.

Maybe he's the one who originally invented the spell that did the stone transformation? Or set things in motion to murder the dragon? Maybe he's even the one who taught dark magic to the humans and was imprisoned for it? Given that he was there and took magic from the prince, I'd bet the caterpillar is his way of getting free from the place he was held in for so long. I bet he'll turn out to be a genocidal madman with a calm, calculating mind, which are the most dangerous kind.

He also expressed a vested interest in keeping her onboard (i.e. he cautioned viren not to tell her to the truth or he would lose her, and commented that she was a “valuable asset”). Edit: on second thought, having read “patience,” I think aaravos will probably go for Callum next (maybe Claudia will be his backup option)

I think it's reflection of his character he turned the dragon king into stone needlessly and manipulated his friend for ages even using his dead wife(which HE got killed) as an excuse he also corrupted his body and soul with dark magic and having his own family so divided in a way he is receiving the full debt of using dark magic for so long so often and seeing that the dragons were right and that it always costs more than it's worth

Here are my predictions: There will be a time skip of at least three or four years and the first few episodes will alternate between bringing the audience up to speed on what's been happening during those years and filling in the back story of Aaravos and possibly Callum's birth father. Zym will have grown to the size where he can fly carrying an averaged sized, unarmored person for several miles and summon small storms. Rayla will spend much of season four looking for her parents, possibly with the help of Ethari who realized that Runaar's lotus hadn't sunk all of the way and Janai who wants Viren's hide. She'll also be dealing with blow back from other elves for becoming friendly with humans, including the families of those who were killed fighting the Crown Guard. Ezran will be dealing with hostile reactions to his plans for peaceful relations with Xadia, both from within Katolis and the three kingdoms who don't want to believe that it was Viren who sent those smoke assassins to kill their rulers. Anyan will also be having problems because of her decision to aid Xadia. Callumn will spend his time between aiding Ezran, perfecting his mastery of Sky Magic, possibly improving his fighting skills and figuring out how to teach other humans how to connect his Primal Sources with which they have affinities. I'd also like one of his first students to be Ellis who Lugane discovers, much to own surprise, has an affinity with the Moon Arcanum. Seeing what Dark Magic does to Claudia will force Viren to realize just how dangerous it is and what it's been doing to him. He may also learn, possibly from Soren, how humanity is starting to benefit from Ezran's and Callum's vision for the future. He will probably end up freeing the elves he's imprisoned and give his life to defend Soren, the princes, possibly even Zym or Rayla, and his sacrifice will end up driving Claudia deeper into Aaravos's grip.

Considering the way that Viren was represented by turning into stone, indicating fixed in place, and having a tear run down his face, indicating regret or perhaps pain, I suspect that the viewers may yet take on a more sympathetic perspective on the character. What intrigues me is the fact that Aaravos isn't looking menacing at Viren as some antagonist might, he's looking at Viren... almost lovingly or compassionately.

I also noticed Aaravos's expression and thought it was interesting! This entire sequence is packed full of symbolism, so I'm wondering what significance that might have. The main theory going around is that Aaravos originally taught humans dark magic. So I have to wonder if his expression in this scene is supposed to signify that his initial actions toward the humans were out of compassion. If there's a double meaning in this sequence, it could be that Viren reaching up to the stars and being picked up by Aaravos suggests he's not only being played as a pawn in present day, but also that Aaravos helped the humans when they were at their lowest point in the past. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it's fun to speculate.

The star-touched elf was merely examining Viren in closer detail. Although I noticed someone posting a comment made by one of the creators of the show that Aaravos picking up Viren was a reference to the new board game with figurines that was coming out or already has come out. The posting is somewhere on a facebook group fans talk about the show on.

I do think at the very least it might signify that Viren's going to be paying a hefty price for his actions --- especially since we see him in the same position he left Avizandum in during season 3's flashback. I was hoping to see Viren start to come to his senses this season while watching his daughter descend further into darkness and ultimately turn against Aaravos... but this make me think that MIGHT not happen. At least maybe not as soon as this season. We'll see, I guess.

This is probably my favorite animated show ever, and I'm so glad it's coming back soon after so long suffering through the TDP drought lol and for me, a million rewatches. Like pretty much everyone else, I'm definitely intrigued by Aaravos and his backstory (as well as learning more about Startouch elves in general). Its good to see that the next season will touch on that, as I hoped it might! I wonder if Viren turning to stone here as an obvious callback to Avizandum's death might potentially be foreshadowing his fate soon?

OMG i am so happy. The video gave me goosebumps. I mean what do we see in this video. The background music is beautiful, mystical, but also sad and ominous. The Dragon Prince has done a pretty good job so far of creating well-written characters who are not completely good or completely evil. We know so little about Aaravos so far, but I'm convinced that he isn't really "evil" so much as angry and bitter after being locked away for centuries. He's had a lot of time to let his hatred stew, and now he's out for vengeance against Xadia. The big question is --- whatever he did --- which I'm guessing at this point was to teach the humans dark magic, were his intentions in doing so decent? Or were they motivated by some other vendetta/desire for power?

Viren says he cares about humanity and probably tells himself that as well, but everything he's done for 'humanity' has been things that give him more power and get other people hurt. Claudia seems 'innocent' but if anything I get Anakin Skywalker vibes, a possessive control freak who will trample all over the wishes and happiness of everyone around her to get what she wants.

I think this scene means that Aaravos is making some kind of big elaborate plan for some grand scheme. And he sees Viren a just a pawn in his game. I think that’s what it means when he turns to stone and gets picked up by Aaravos. He probably sees the return of the dragon prince and all of the things that he did with Viren as just a game. I hope Callum, Ezran, Rayla, and Zym are clever enough to beat Aaravos at his own game. Hopefully this next season could give us some insight into what Aaravos is planning. Viren's pose being the same as Avizandum is definitely not a coincidence. I see multiple scenarios playing out: -Claudia realizes her father is actually evil and joins Soren. Viren is turned to stone as Claudia leaves. -Aaravos realizes Viren has served his purpose and moves on to his next puppet, Claudia. Viren, realizing what he is doing, tries to reach out for Claudia, but is turned to stone. -Similar to the first scenario, but Viren doesn't turn to stone right away. Rather, Aaravos wait until he is alone to turn him to stone. In his final moments, he sees Pip flying over, which people have speculated holds Harrow soul, meaning the last thing he sees is his former friend.

my theory viren found out what the roof did and knows that there is no return for him and he will try to save claudia who fell more under aaravos influence. maybe it will be more than just a pawn on an aaravos board.

$100 the reason Aarqvos was imprisoned is that he gave humans dark magic just to be a shit kicker, took the hostilities between the two races to a new level( the humans actually had ways to beat the elves now, never mind the cruelty involved) and he was viewed as the devil for creating a new kind of magic based solely on stealing life from other beings.
