This is an awesome book. "Dragon Warrior" was my first proper rpg ever, and the series has always been close to my heart. And yes, I'd love to see more Japanese books

Do you know from which game/remake the art for each monster is from, especially the older monsters
@ObscuritiesinMiniature
@ObscuritiesinMiniature 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it states which game each monster was from originally.

@@ObscuritiesinMiniature yeah but that's not what i'm asking, the art used for the monsters in the book is definitely not from the NES/Famicom era seems to be from the DS era but i could be wrong

if i had to guess... probably the first time we see the updated art (that you see in the encyclopedia) would be from the DS remake of Dragon Quest IV but it's really hard to tell honestly

Hey if you know what is the difference between those Oathmark goblin wolf riders in the blister packs from the ones that come in the kit you built?
@ObscuritiesinMiniature
@ObscuritiesinMiniature 4 жыл бұрын
The blister models are all metal. They make the heroes of each race in metal in case you want more unique looking versions than the ones you can make with the included parts.

Like you, I also love me a good monster book (I've got way to many Monstrous manuals, beastiaries, and other RPG monster books weighing down my shelves to prove it), so I had picked this up in Japan when I came out. I've never been a huge fan of the Dragon Quest games, but I do like the Toriyama Art, and this is some of his finest work. I'm guessing you already have them, but when I stumbled upon this book, I also found a series of books on all the different monsters from all the different Ultra man Kaiju shows. Some really fun designs there, and all rendered as costumes! Crazy how off the wall some of those are. What are your holy grail japanese books you'd like to find?

We've owned a variety of Ultraman books like you describe over the years, but my son destroyed most of them when he was little from constantly rereading them. I think the furthest they went was up to Mebius or Cosmos, so they would have been pretty out of date nowadays. Those drugged out mid 70s designs are things I crave for the tabletop! Holy Grail books... hmm. Currently it's the Metal Hero Design Works: メタルヒーロー怪人デザイン大鑑 奇怪千蛮. Had a chance to get it before, but it's pricey, big, and heavy, so I passed when I had the opportunity. Another one I missed my opportunity on was Dougal Dixon's "Man After Man." It's prohibitively expensive these days and didn't get reprinted with his other speculative future works. We found a copy in Japan before and my wife didn't believe me how expensive it was (in the days before smart phones, otherwise I would have proven it to her), so we didn't get it. I have a few Holy Grails I no longer own I regret selling off over the years, like classic editions of Go Nagai works I got him to autograph at Comic Con (and got yelled at by Danzig while I was at it!), or an early Yasushi Nirasawa book, "Creature Core," which was basically a Japanese monster manual based on all his wild designs, with D&D stat blocks and everything. Book was signed and had a crazy sketch on the interior frontispiece. Sad I let it go.

ok so doing some research on the artwork and it seems all of the main artwork you see in the encyclopedia originates from Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and all games released after this use that artwork
@Moonboy65
@Moonboy65 2 жыл бұрын
of course some of the monsters did not appear in Monsters: Jokers, so their artwork would use the one from the DS remake that they appear in if that makes sense for example the Cyclown does not appear Joker or Joker 2 so his artwork would be from the DS remake of DQIV
