Also... could you please - at least for now - stick to 2014 5e? I know, it's a lot to ask, but no one I know will switch the system (myself and my players included). And even so, almost no one will switch while their campaign is still running. Or - alternatively: Could you give us a guide how we can translate 5.5 material back to 5.e? I bet, the reactions would just be neat legendary actions? Anyhow - it's nice to have you back! I wish you all the best

Tales have long been told of a monster of polished glass that stalks the forest at the base of the nearby mountain. No bounty has been placed because no creature has been found, and no trace remains of the dozens of travelers who have vanished in the area in recent years. Still, the party is on edge as they walk the forest trail, pursuing their fortunes three towns over. There are no birds in this forest, a state believed by many to be the product of some ancient curse, but it is never _quite_ silent. The sounds of creatures shifting in the underbrush and canopy means the party's hands are never far from their weapons as they follow the trail away from the mountain. Eventually they find the forest's edge. Sunlight meets their path, clear and undappled for the first time since daybreak, and their spirits start to lift. Even so, the air is tinged with unease. Glancing back, the party's ranger catches a glimpse of the wide, blue horizon through the trees. Nothing follows them out of the forest. It's not until they're making camp for the evening that the creeping sense of dread they've been feeling crystalizes: the forest bordered a mountain. _There was no horizon behind them._

I realized "They pretend to be Silvers" before it was even said, and the sheer horror that went with the realization actually rocked me in my chair. I blame adoring Silvers the most out of the various dragon types, but also the simple horror of believing the impossibly powerful creature you've been interacting with is benevolent, only to find out it is as far from that as possible, is the kind of emotional kick usually reserved for the Favorite NPC's sudden but inevitable betrayal. Or the consequences of really, *really* unsettling Enchantment magic. I know it's autumn and all as I write this, but *brrr* .

They could also raid other dragon or beings hoards to make special exhibits. If they are feeling especially evil they mislabel the artifacts. Example: Old rival's favorite childhood toy is labeled as object believed to be used in "fertility rights". Then publishes numerous papers on the subject so that it is never able to be corrected.

I see Chromium Dragons as being the Resource Managers of the draconic empire. They have to own everything so that the citizens of their nation aren’t wasteful. When the empire fell apart, this mindset never went away. That being said, you really dropped the ball with their ice breath. The cone created ice crystals that hampered enemy movement (- to dex), and the line was described as a literal ’block of solid ice’. That’s like getting hit by a flying ice sculpture!
@gratuitouslurking86102 ай бұрын
That's kinda neat. I imagine in the line's case it'd be like getting hit with a mix of Cold + Bludgeon damage, and if it hits someone it leaves a piece of half-cover in a square nearby if you're a big enough Chromium dragon.

If I'm being honest, every DM I know, including me, are still actively running campaigns in 2014 5e that aren't going to end for a while, and many don't plan on ever going to 2024 rules. I definitely understand why you want to support DMs who are going to be using the new rules, but I think a lot of people would appreciate if you still had 5e statblocks too. Maybe you could have two separate docs, one for each edition? I know that's a lot more work and this is free content, but that would, in my opinion, be very helpful for many DMs.

Looking good, DD! It's good to see your face again, and I'm glad things are on the mend. Also, your slight break at 5:46 had me rolling 😂 I really like these dudes. I'm wondering if their breath weapon should actually be more strategic or unusual: what if their breath is actually a reflective trap or reaction? e.g. the party sees the dragon breathe, but nothing visible comes out...and when one of them casts a projectile spell later in combat it reflects off the invisible breath wall back at the caster. Maybe that's too much of a spellcaster shutdown, but it feels like that fits this dragon's theming better. Also, I'd love to have one of these guys in a dystopian cyberpunk setting as a megacorpo suit or CEO: everything you own is actually on-loan from Chromium, Inc. 😅 Also also, I wrote a Warlock patron and pact based off your old Time Elemental video, and it was a (n Eldritch) blast to make. personally, i find some of the stuff for their new statblock design kinda weird. I do like that they added spellcasting into it again, but some of the other stuff is kinda strange. for example the emphasis on reactions instead of legendary actions. i feel with legendary actions were fine to begin with, but changing it to reactions brings with it some weird stuff, like being able to shut down legendary actions with something like a slow effect or a tasha's mind whip, as well as leaving as giving legendary actions up for oppertunity attacks. sure, you could prevent legendary actions with the incapacitated condition with 2014 rules, but a lot of things take away reactions in the rules, (at least in the 2014 edition, idk about 2024), and incapacitated takes reactions away anyway so you added now more ways to prevent to lessen the moveset of the monsters, so it becomes a bit more of an isssue. Also legendary actions are a bit less interuptive, for example the statblock of the green dragon shows that you can interupt a turn of an creature to make a rend attack when it gets hit, instead in between turns like in the older version. It also now requires triggers for it to work, and while many of these are not difficult, i could imagine you never be able to use some of these reactions depending on how the party plays, and what they do. in the old one you had more of a choice in that regard. as for the rend part, I get why they made claws and bites into a single attack, since it simplifies the statblock, but it does make it a bit more generic, and less unique. something like "bite" or "claw" invoke more of an image in the mind, that "rend" simply doesn't do. as for lair bonusses? kinda the same thing as the rend thing, easier to use, but feels a lot more generic, instead of interesting things they could only do in the layer. like the green dragon in the 2014 version can call up roots and vines to entangle creatures, create magical fog that could charm people, or call up something similar to a wall of thorns. now they can to one more thing in combat, and are a bit tougher, which is kinda boring. Also small personal gripe, i don't quite like the look of the ability scores and saves, but that's more of personal preference, idk it just looks more like an excel spreadsheet to me. maybe i need to get used to it. Don't get me wrong, the statblock is not bad, but i don't know if i would count most of the changes as an improvement.

The breath weapon being a cone of ice crystals that can be focused into a line is interesting, and you mentioned it maybe doing something with radiant damage, but what about if the line attack version was a light based attack, and thus (for the most part) acts like light. Where the cone breath weapon if just a freezing breath, with the line it's using ice crystals and mirrored chrome surfaces to shoot a beam of magical light cools and freezes surfaces it touches instead of warming them, and which reflects off reflective surfaces/ passes harmlessly through clear objects. This complements the ability to cast a special version of _flesh to stone_ that turns it's victims into crystals; if those crystals are sufficiently transparent the line attack could be fired through them akin to shining a laser through the glass of a window, or they could even be used as prisms to bend the line and make the attack curve or break into a cone out the other side of the crystalised statue. This would give the dragon a dirty trick of being able to functionally attack directly through cover (even full cover) provided the cover is see through, which even most line of sight spells don't actually allow, as well as incentivise a fighting style of trying to position petrified part members in between the active party and itself, using them as shields while still being able to attack freely, and even use the threat of using it's rend attacks to shatter those party members depending on how the fight's panning out. The chromium dragon liking a liar that's basically a labyrinthine mirror funhouse would make even more sense if it's focused breath weapon if functionally a light beam, as it could really take advantage of it's surrounding to brutal effect by bouncing it's attack off walls and around corners. The fact it deals cold damage in both forms gives an angle for it to freeze over non-reflective surfaces it hits, which can result in forming icy surfaces that can then reflect/ refract the line breath weapon similar to the crystal petrified targets, or it could just freeze the ground to make it slippery difficult terrain. This would also give an angle for something the players can exploit; if the focused breath weapon is a beam with presumably longer effective range and maybe slightly higher damage, having a counter measure for it would be a great benefit, and with a little knowledge and cunning the party could take advantage of the breath weapon's built in property of bouncing off reflective surfaces to deflect the attack away from themselves; This would potentially give an advantage to characters with shiny metal armour/ shields who's kit already has some natural advantages for the fight provided the pick up on it. Afaik characters with such equipment are probably most likely to be fighters and paladins, melee classes who'd otherwise be at a natural disadvantage against a giant flying lizard that shoots lasers that is stalking you around a mirror maze with a frozen floor, so having even mundane equipment they're likely to have provide a little extra benefit akin to a minor magic item that helps to keep them alive/ safe from the ranged attack would probably be quite welcome.

Thanks for the vid and this diengenious dragon, hope your health be better and this month sucks less. Would you be willing to do Anima Beyond Fantasy conversions? I realize it's completely different from your norm, and might require more work than normal... But there are some incredibly interesting creatures there, that you might find use for :3

As for plot hooks, I think you could combine some of those first few ideas. Like with the chrome dragon pretending to be a silver, you could have it disguise itself AS the concerned citizen asking the party to request aid from their silver dragon protector. Alternatively, you could have it disguised as the crazy adventurer who wants to hunt down the chrome dragon. It could even be the person paying the adventurers to go through the lair to bring back a specific piece of loot. What they don't know is the dragon will be ready and waiting after the adventurers tell their wealthy patron their plans to get in and out. Finally, an idea for the hoard could be something like the ice maidens of japanese folklore. It could keep the statues of the people it has slain, forever frozen in that look of terror that chrome dragons love to see so much. They might even do so as a means of showing off to other chrome dragons, bragging about the ways they went about getting such a gruesome expression out of that person.

A long time fan, brought here by the purple dragon video of yore. Not a DnD player per se, I DM Pathfinder. Which has more dragons than DnD it seems, each of the 6 bestiaries had a new family of dragons in them. For me, the most interesting of the bunch (due to being more grounded, than, say, Time Dragons of the Outer Dragon family), were the Primal dragons. Dragons native to the elemental planes and the Plane of Shadows. Three in particular are interesting, in either mechanics or lore: 1. Magma dragons of the Plane of Fire. Erratic, downright violently insane. Outwardly, at least. They always have a logical reason for their actions. Not that they are sharing. They breathe, (surprise!!) lava, which either clings to the unfortunate victims, or encases them in a shell of obsidian. Most interesting bit is that they have weakness to cold, but once they get old enough, they have permanent Fire Shield around them. Meaning they actually take LESS damage from their weakness than other elements. 2. Umbral Dragons of Plane of Shadow. Standard evil dragon, with additional Shadowfell edge. Interestingly enough, one of these could very well hoard the animated shadows of their victims. They breathe negative energy, and are immune to it. Which in DnD would be necrotic damage, and of the variety that lowers max hit points. They could also actually eat levels from the vigtims of their claws and fangs, but DnD does not do that. Hence, reduced max hp. Spooky bit is that they can create undead shadows of their victims, and breathe shadows as they grow old enough, which lowers the STR score of those hit by it. 3. Brine Dragons of the Plane of Water. Best for last, these dragons have so much potential as plot hooks. They hoard people, as in, what they crave is not really gold, but subjects. A brine dragon that enters adulthood without even a modest kingdom to their name is an utter failure of his kind. Fittingly, Pathfinder-verse's Elemental Lord of Water is a Great Wyrm Brine Dragon! In combat, brine dragons breathe high pressure water laced with ridiculously corrosive salt crystals. Corrosive enough to match a black dragon's acid breath, and their claws and teeth are so stuffed with salt that every hit is excruciatingly painful. They are nothing short of an utter calamity in their element, having Control Water at will and access to Horrid Wilting as ancients. I would especially love to see a take on Brine Dragons on this channel, and maybe Cloud and Crystal dragons could be made interesting too.

breath weapon: focussed radiance. if within sunlight or near an equally strong light source, it can spread its wings and channel the incoming light into its breath weapon, skipping the recharge dice roll and dealing 50% more damage. in dim light, its a normal breath weapon. in darkness, it loses the breath weapon entirely.

Hilarious combat idea, the chromium dragon uses flesh to crystal to convert one opponent into a statue then uses them as a reflective/refractive surface to bounce their ice beam breath weapon off of to make it change direction when fired

2 plots that immediately jump to mind are: 1: The party is hired by a "Silver dragon" to do some treasure hunting of some sort, maybe stealing some particularly valuable/magic gem from an "Evil" wizard or so-and-so. The mission is a success, they get paid, everything is good.... until the "Evil Wizard" shows up and tells the party the truth. Now, assuming they even believe this new guy, they have to steal back the item from the Chromium dragon under even tighter security. 2: Because of the tracing magic. The party encounters some bandits or something, defeat them and they get loot. Only to find out that their loot was actually stolen from a Chromium dragon.... who now thinks the party is the one who stole it, so now they have to either fight their way through the Dragon's minions to return the loot and explain the situation, or now have to find a way to fight said Chromium dragon to keep their loot, their lives, and possibly get even more loot out of it. Either way, the effort is probably not worth what they originally got!

On the plus side, the dragon's obsessive organization of its hoard would probably make it easier for potential thieves to find a specific item and to predict likely locations for traps.

The 'Posing as a Sculptor' bit is fantastically on brand. I mean, the value of art in general is less about the physical value and more the contextual one, so in order to _create_ that value the art has to circulate a bit first. Cue a Chromium Dragon taking the easy route to both make (crystalize) a sculpture and spread the word to make it famous (and by extension valuable).

Breath weapon idea. The Demon Core. A dragon with fissile material inside a special organ. It can use neutron reflection like the demon core to force the material to go critical. Just breathe fission heat and radiation like a fucking death ray.

A crystal breath weapon that fires off a barrage of crystals or if fired at the ground function similar to chaotic's rock wave or Bakugan gen 2 trox's crystal rock riser attacks? Could this work?

In 2nd Ed dragons could either cast a spell, use their breath weapon up to 3 times per day, or multiattack with claw/claw/bite in the front, wing buffet on the sides, or kick and tail swipe from behind. Add in great movement speed and usual lair advantages like wards, minions, and traps.
