I'm confused. 14" vertical or horizontal? How does the draw bar get in the way of an implement? A demonstration would be good.

Horizontal. This is the drawbar length setting for implements attached to the drawbar. As opposed to the 3-point hitch.

Most small tractor attachments mount to the three point, so there's not much use for the draw bar. If you ever get a pull-type implement with wheels on it, or some kind of wagon or trailer, you'll use that draw bar. I rarely use mine.

The drawbar can be fitted with a hitch ball if you want to tow your utility trailer around your land.

That I did not know on the bar, I just brought me a Massey Ferguson after yrs. of having John Deere’s not sure I’m going to like it . But laying all of it beside it’s nice know that 14 inches from PTO. Guess after 5 yrs, u can always learn something new.

some tractors don't allow the drawbar to be retracted fully (example Kubota 4240L). The transmission is in the way.

Mike I just don't understand why they changed the connection of the drawbar from further front on the tractor to just at the rear axle. I found many older tractors with less hp and forward placed drawbar connection could pull better than the tractors I see and have today. Mike would it be ok with you if I mention your channel in a review ? Thanks Steve.

+Steve Rob Absolutely, mention it all you want as long as it's good! I guess you'll actually add to my web traffic if you'd say its the worse thing on KZbin, people would be drawn to see it then as well :). Either way, GO FOR IT! You bring up a really good point about the drawbar placement. You've obviously been around tractors a bit. I wonder if some of the older tractors had more pull because of A) weight or B) longer wheelbase. Some of those old tractors had a gob of steel in them and that might have been part of it, and, the tractors continue to get shorter and shorter wheelbases as the years go on and I would think more weight and longer wheelbase would have a huge impact on pulling power. But the drawbar placement could impact that as well. Maybe an engineering-type will read this and tell us how the drawbar geometry impacts pulling capacity. I'm curious. I'll ask a couple of my tractor pulling buddies, they'll have an opinion. Great question!

so the fourteen inches applies to pto driven devices that are towed by the draw bar, not towed by the three point lift arms? is that correct?

+daveknowshow That's right. If the implement is on the three point that's not an issue. The only thing you need to make sure of on a three point implement is that the shaft is not so long that it puts it in a bind in the travel up and down of the machine. Some shafts need to be shortened by cutting a piece out of each half before being run on the tractor. It doesn't happen often, but I've seen it. A major manufacturer of disc mowers a few years ago changed suppliers of PTO shafts and on some tractors they were so long they could damage the gearbox when moving the implement up and down. Our dealership had been accustomed to sending them out the way they came from the factory and after a couple of major failures, we learned to cut about 4" out of each shaft before delivery.

***** yea I had to cut my shaft on my three point tiller. are gear box ratios different from one device to another? for example is the ratio of a gear box for a brush hog different from the ratio of a gear box on a tiller?

***** Yeah, they are. Certain implements need to be spinning pretty fast like tillers and brush hogs, and then you have post hole diggers that run quite a bit slower. That's a really good question. You got me curious about whether the blade tip speed is higher on a brush hog or a tiller. I'm going to have to research that. My gut tells me the tiller blades are spinning faster but I have nothing to document it. I told my wife tonight that my questions were getting tougher and making me have to think and I hate that :).

I hear ya buddy. as you know I make a few videos myself and I also build tools at the moment I'm designing a three point ground engaging tool. my son works for Kubota as a service tech but he is rarely around to ask questions. sometimes it questionable who knows more him or I. lol I think the tiller is a tad slower than the brush hog and finish mower. the post hole diggers are much slower and the ones that turn wide bits just creep along very slow but have massive torque. I'm thinking about a gear box for this project I'm designing because I need the shaft to come from the side and not simply straight back. I do wonder how the gear reduction reacts to ground engaging tools like a tiller verses a none ground engaging tool like a mower. there must be a reason to the madness of all this math! now my brain hurts!

Why do front end of tractors not have a draw bar? Sometimes I need to drive up and pull something but have a long way to turn around and back up a long way to do it. Would be easier to hitch to the front, pull 20 feet and go forward again.

I use my tractor to pull a trailer with a ball hitch. It is inconvenient to remove the ball or change the draw bar everytime I need the draw bar without a ball. If my draw bar has multiple holes can I put the ball in one hole and leave the las hole open for a pin?

Not on all tractors. Most people who purchase compact tractors almost never use the draw bar. Some have a clevis hitch, there could be some tractors where they charge extra for any type of hitch, though I've not heard of that. When steel prices got high a few years ago some draw bars walked off.

What is the distance from the tip of the PTO shaft to say the middle of the holes on a CAT 0, CAT 1 & CAT 2 3pt? If the arms holes are the same height as the PTO shaft?

+Karl Eisenmenger Anything that you tow that is driven with a PTO shaft. If its a three point mount there are no worries, if it's pulled by the drawbar, the attaching hole in the drawbar needs to be 14 inches from the tip of the end of the PTO extended at a right angle to the hole. Some drawbars have a couple of holes where they can be different lengths from the tractor, or you could turn it around and you might get a different distance. Hope that makes sense. Its a little hard to explain.

Ha Mike love your videos on draw bars. Got a quick question --I live on the east coast of Newfoundland Canada and its hard to find help with attachments. I just bought a Dearborn 10-151 two bottom plow and the horizontal bar that the lower arms on my JD 3320 attaches is broken and from the factory had a curve in it. I was considering finding the same size stock 1 1/4 x 2 and fabricating my own with cat 1 pins. The question is why is the original bar curved.

Mike thanks for another great video. I learn something new every time. Can you suggest a draw bar and draw bar assembly for my Massey Ferguson GC 1705. Perhaps a place to get one at a decent price. +drbbhiggins Thanks for the nice comments, Google tells you that to be successful you need to post at the same time every week and I had a really hard time remembering until I found out you can program the videos to post at a pre-set time. Oh the many things I've learned doing this... Bad news on the drawbar. It may not be an option and if it is you'll likely have to get that from a Massey dealer and they're usually not cheap. I'm assuming it has a "clevis" style drawbar now? Manufacturers tend to put those clevis hitches on some of their tractors and sometimes they have on optional flat drawbar available and sometimes they don't. I'd talk to my local dealer. What I've seen in the MF literature makes me think they're not available.

It really only matters if you're using a pull-type PTO powered implement. Are there no additional holes in the drawbar or could it be turned around?

@@TractorMike I am using a pull type implement (small square baler). The draw bar is maxed out (no additional holes) and can not be turned around. I think I will have to manufacture a correctly sized drawbar. Thank you for your advice.

+Some Southern Stuff If you want to know the truth I've never seen damage from a situation like that. Theoretically, if the drawbar were too far in, the PTO half shafts might come apart, if it was too far back they could jam together. Some of the things I discuss are highly, highly unlikely to be a problem, but you just never know. It's in every implement owner's manual I've ever seen, so the technical writers for sure are worried about it, and it gives me something to talk about :). If you're ever on Jeopardy and there's a "Farm Tractor" category, this information might be really beneficial!

ok mike here is the question for you. I own a Mahindra 1626, i mainly use it spreading dirt and Box blade. I need a method for pulling a Utility trailer much like they did many years ago Loading hay in the pasture. I see quite a lot of Trailer hitch receiver 3 point that can be attached. But I also read where some 3 point hitch were 2 inches short to fit tractor. So could you explain in next video what a Cat 1 attachment is? Can you explain how to tell if a 3 point attachment will even fit your tractor or if it will be too large or too small? So there are sub compact, Compact tractors and my guess is Full Tractor... Would help people that do not know a lot about the different size tractors and implements designed for them, would a sub compact tractor work a Brush cutter made for a Compact Tractor? The different series of Tractors i guess has their own series of Implements??? I do not really know cause i am new...

Great video Mike! I have learned much about operating a tractor from you...keep up the good work. My question concerns the vertical distance from the top of the drawbar to the center of the PTO shaft. I have a Kubota Grand L6060 and am looking to purchase a 12ft Land pride RC2512 rotary cutter. The specs on the cutter call for a minimum of 8" from the top of the drawbar to the center of the PTO shaft. My tractor only measures about 5-1/2" vertical distance. Will that cause a problem?

Absolutely...older farm implements tended to be pull type, versus three point. They pulled by the drawbar. Most smaller stuff today hooks to the three point.

Hey Mike, thanks for another excellent video. I have bought my first tractor and have not needed to use the drawbar yet, it is disconnected at the moment. However I have a question about it as it has been a while and I can't remember how to use it. Mine has a cable that I think is supposed to let me quickly disconnect it and I assume reconnect it... Any idea what this is and how it is supposed to work,when I pull the cable up (when seated in the tractor), nothing appears to happen. Any ideas?

I've not seen a tractor with a cable that disconnected the drawbar, so I'm not sure exactly what we're dealing with here. Give me a little more information, what model and brand is the tractor and where is the cable located? There may be something out there that I haven't seen, I'm not getting a mental picture of what you're describing. Maybe send a picture to [e-mail]?

+powerram92 There are actually two sizes of 1000 RPM PTO's. If the shaft is 1 3/8" its 16" from the end of the shaft to the center of the drawbar hole, if the shaft is 1 3/4" that distance should be 20". Thanks for the question.
