The Dreaded Cadillac ATS Shudder - Can It Be Fixed?

There are few things more frustrating than diagnosing drivetrain shudder. I've talked to fellow ATS owners. Some have learned to live with it. Some have traded in their cars and bought something else. But I want to keep my ATS and I want it to feel like it did when I bought it. Smooth. Solid. Quick. Springfield Cadillac in Springfield, VT has taken on the challenge to fix it. After having the car for almost 4 weeks, this is the result.

Hey Buddy. Bought the same car a month ago. With 21000 miles. This guy fed you a pile of.... when he said he wants you to he happy. I have the same issue. I changed the engine oil to pensoil full synthetic and put full synthetic in the tranny. Also changed to 94 contain. Problem went away. I'm a retired 30 year gm worker. This is a problem with this drive train. It was rushed into production to meet cafe ratings. It is more than the transmission. When you have a 4 cylinder in 8th gear running at 1500 rpm pulling a 3000 lb weight you will get shudder. The tranny is programmed to allow the turbo to make up the power loss when you step on the gas, instead of a down shift. This keeps the rpms low. The turbo has a lag of 2 seconds causing a shudder to occur. Similar to running the wrong gear with a manual transmission. The real issue is that without doing what I did, you will eventually have an issue of a cracked transfer case from the vibration. The 4 cylinder engine is a poor powertrain option for this vehicle. The turbo is a single volute and causes excessive cross feed on the intake. Try driving in manual mode with higher rpms between shifts and the problem disappears. You need to keep the rpms up with a turbo. The programming on this drivetrain is designed to keep the rpms low. It is a great performer at 85 plus mph...lol

BTW, my car has the 6l45 not the 8. GM has documented the 8-speed problem and is publicly arguing in court that the 8 speed has a design flaw that causes build up of metal shavings due to poor oiling that causes the shudder. GM said that changing the fluid is a temp fix. The shudder will return. In regards to the 6l45, I changed my own fluid and I could see at 40,000 miles it was completely saturated with metal and clutch material. The filter was compromised and I'm sure low line pressure was causing messed up slow up shift and down shift response. It shifted SO much better, smoother, quieter, almost zero shudder when I changed it so I knew the contaminated fluid and filter was the probelm. I'm further down the road from this video, but eventually I asked them to look at the shudder. They did... and later I was told by one of the mechanics that they flushed the transmission. They didnt document it, but it did fix the transmission shudder. But even now, when this thing is cold its smooth smooth smooth at all speeds. But when driven frequently it gets worse. Something is getting hot and causing problems. I have to think it has to do with tire/old fluid. I plan to change the front diff and the transfer case fluid very soon. Hopefully that simple solution finds the fix.

I have a 2016 Ats 2.0T…should I always use synthetic engine and transmission oil? Also my check engine light is on and I’ve changed both intake valves in the front, new ecm, new coils and plugs…still messes up when I press the gas too hard or when I’m climbing a bridge

I completely agree with David. I’ve been a mechanic for 10 years and engines dont like running that low. No matter what they say about the latest and greatest technology, engines dont like running that low. But they so it to meet higher and stricter MPG standards. They make the turbo make up power instead of downshifting the transmission. Lower RPM higher MPG.

Interesting as I took it to the dealership cause I was having the “shrudder” issue and they said a tranny flush with the new GM recommended oil will fix it. I drove to a freeway right after I got the car back and it was still the same. When I put it M and leave it in 7th going 50~60 the problem isn’t there. I only go to 8th when I’m going 70~75.

Michael, I have a 2012 Buick LaCrosse 3.6L with the 6T70 transmission. I too have had issues with the "shuddering". It happens when you are driving around 45mph cruising speed all the way up to even 70mph in cruise control. After doing a ton of work on the car, I lastly did the Hubs & Bearings, front & rear. The shuddering calmed down 80%. Now, the only time I feel it is after the car is warmed up [1hr. or 60 miles of driving to work one way] and when the cars RPMs drop down 100-200 while going up a hill on the road, especially on cruise control. After everything I did, I am thinking that the shifting solenoid and/or speed sensor[s] is going bad because it is that selenoid/sensor[s] that tells the transmission when to up or downshift. When going up a hill on the road is the only time I feel it. And not always. Very detailed. Keep 'em coming mate.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s what mine did!! Everything that increases resistance increases shudder. Dragging brakes. Bad wheel alignment. Extra weight. And definitely when it gets really warmed up it gets worse. They kept my car for 4 weeks. When I got it back it no longer shuddered. The mechanic said he tightened stuff up but claimed he didn’t do anything else. I wish I could share more detail. I have a friend who had to replace his torque converter. That fixed it for him. Mine is still smooth as silk. Have you changed the fluid and filter yet? That improved mine tremendously.

I know that when the tranmission is not filled to the correct level, there will be a shudder. When filling the transmission with oil, there is a correct procedure. You have to get the car to operating temperature driving it around and then having it running when it's raised off the ground and level, and the fluid level needs to be checked at that point.

I'd go the $300 route (as long as its a real flush and not just a pan drop with new filter) and make sure they use the factory Dexron VI spec fluid. It doesnt have to be the fancy mobil stuff. If it comes back - make sure you're not running on over-inflated tires. I went through two years of scratching my head with a Buick TourX. Same engine in the AWD Insignia platform. I had a persistent shudder that felt like a mis-fire under moderate load. When I reduced my tire pressure from 40psi down to 35psi ... the shudder almost completely went away (Dropping it down to the factory recommended 32psi would probably completely eliminate it). I also noticed you've got aftermarket rims and tires which may be exasperating the problem (anecdotally from having a BMW 740i in the past - I could not get rid of a vibration until I switched back to OEM wheels and tires). That grumble? You're driving in snow and ice - could it have just been a piece of broken off ice and grime that got caught between your wider aftermarkets and the plastic fender guards? Anyway - all the best. These are very nice cars for the price compared to some German and Japanese competitors.

Few days later I noticed that after driving for awhile after a complete stop I would get shuddering from 1st to 2nd gear. If I babied it frm and very gently let it get up to speed no shudder but I knew I had to fix it. The dealership experience was a mess. This was a new dealer for Cadillac. They picked it up when the other guys went out of business. Officially they were supposed to say shudder is normal and send me on my way. That’s what the other dealer did. But this mechanic fixed it, but he told me he did nothing. I assume he got reamed for doing work Cadillac refused to pay for…. And if they fixed mine, they would have to fix everyone else’s. The transmission was flawless. So I asked another mechanic what the other guy did to fix it. He said “he flushed it”. However the rear diff was a whole diff story. Eventually I figured out that they never replaced the 1 time use bolts. And they did not torque them to spec. The rear diff was loose. Shook itself to death. It kept failing from improper install. But also, it’s an incredibly fragile thing. Too bad. When I went to upgrade the rear diff myself to the m6 Camaro diff, my wife said nah… just go get your truck. So I traded the ats.

Whew! That’s very steep. You have the 8 speed. It actually has an oiling problem. If the 2x pan drop didn’t fix it, a power flush is typically the only way to fix it. And then repeat every 30k miles. Hope you get it sorted and it doesn’t cost 9k! 🙏

@sstressfl
@sstressfl Жыл бұрын
If its a shudder and has an 8 speed in it, the trans needs to be power flushed, filter replaced. That usually fixes it. Sometimes there can be torque converter damage and that would need to be replaced. But most often, the flush fixes it. Will need to be done every 30k miles though to keep it healthy. if its more like a vibration, the rear diff might be failing, or if it has been replaced, was most likely installed wrong and the bolts are not tightened correctly and its loose/vibrating. Thats my guess! I hope you can resolve it. And yes, I researched GM vehicles. They have had serious shudder transmission issues going back decades. 😥 Its a shame, because I truly cheer for American car companies. I want them to do well!

Assuming your engine is solid and its not a motor mount or a trans mount, it would be your transmission causing the shudder. 90% of the time it just needs a transmission fluid flush. If you do it yourself, you cant get all of the fluid out so you need to so it 2 or 3 times before the shudder is 100% gone. This is the 6 speed GM transmission. It has its own known vulnerabilities. But then they updated this car with the new 8 speed that ended up in a class action lawsuit because it is even worse. It requires on-going fluid changes to keep it from shuddering. Here is a list of cars that are effected and IMO you should avoid: gmauthority.com/blog/2019/08/tsb-seems-to-fix-8-speed-automatic-gm-transmission-problems/

Did you ever find out what that issue was with your ATS
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Transmission shudder needed a power flush to completely cure it. They did one and it fixed it but didnt tell me because the dealer is a new Cadillac dealer and they were not supposed to fix it. Instead they were supposed to say what the other Cadillac dealers say… “that’s normal operation”. And then charge for a flush. The rear differential was perfect when I brought it in. Suddenly when they gave it back it was bad. I suspect someone at the dealership took my old one to put in their own car and let my warranty pay for a new one. And then I discovered why the new ones kept going bad. They did not use new bolts/torque the bolts correctly. The rear end was loose, vibrating, and ruining itself. I only discovered it when it got so loose that a bolt was starting to fall out. And this rear diff is leaking. I think it has been damaged by improper install. Eventually it’ll need to be replaced again. But currently it’s not bad enough that they will do anything about it. And besides, it’s a junk rear end made with low quality steel. They fail so frequently that inventory has become nearly impossible to find. However, the newer and stronger posi Camaro 6m rear diff appears to be a valid “upgrade”. Requires diff axle part #s. It has been installed by others and the reports of it’s use are good.

The full dealer flush did it. For some reason the mechanic wouldnt tell me thats what he did and he didnt document it. But when I asked another mechanic how they fixed it he said it was a fluid flush. It hasnt done it since. Oh, and I had some shudder start from the transfer case. I changed the fluid with GM spec fluid and added 1 oz of trans shudder friction modifier and it fixed the transfer case shudder perfectly :)

@@sxvxgebeatz 2.0t awd here! I did have a vacuum leak on one of my motor mounts. They can cause shudder. But most shudder has to do with a transmission thats contaminated with too much clutch and metal material. It needs a new filter to improve line pressure. It needs new fluid to improve friction. And in extreme cases when the flush doesnt work you need a new converter. A proper tuned engine, healthy differential(s), healthy transfer case, correct wheel alignment and healthy brakes all help to deter shudder as well. I hope you get it fixed!

@sstressfl 3 жыл бұрын
@@inversereaction5371 I can't say for sure. Some dealerships are wonderful. Some not so wonderful. But assuming you still have factory warranty that covers the problem, your ATS should be silky smooth. Your warranty claim is "I have a shudder in my car and I would like you to fix it". Let them determine the fix. If the flush is what is required then so be it. If they find a bad motor mount, fix it. If they find a bad fuel injector, fix it. Whatever is causing the shudder.... they need to fix it. Does that make sense? And when you get it back, make sure it's right! If not, take it back again. If you have a problem covered under warranty, do not stop escalating the issue until it is fixed. I hope that helps!

Cadillac refused to pay for it and I suspect if they did they would have thousands of ATSs they would need to pay back. But that rear differential? Later found out it was installed wrong as it was loose. This relationship just got progressively worse. I tend to trust people. But after this experience… (you’d have to watch the series) I would never return to that dealership. Nor would I buy another Cadillac. I know cars fail. But it’s how they treat you under warranty that matters.
