A theory is that Moopsy and Tribble evolved on the same planet. If you consider Moopsy being a predator, then its prey usually evolve to "survive" by either reproduce rapidly or have no bones - both of which I think apply to tribble.
@joda7697
@joda7697 Жыл бұрын
That makes a heck of a lot of sense. I would also wager that they both developed on a high gravity world, which would explain their lack of bones. Can't get crushed if you don't have any. On the other hand, on such a planet, any creature beyond a certain size would need quite sturdy bones, to the point of being walking bags of calcium to manage to stay upright and uncrushed. Then, such a vast amount of bones would allow for an evolutionary bone vampire niche to be opened, and subsequently filled by moopsy.
@insanehippiehippieinsane3828

Not really. Tribbles would not be prey of the Moopsy but scavengers of their kills. In fact putting them together on one planet would probably wipe out the biosphere of the planet.

The Tribble wouldn't be prey, they don't have the bone mass to support. The amount of biomass needed for enough Tribble bones would destroy any environment, and Tribble's are notorious for ruining ecosystems in a matter of hours

The fact that a Moopsy can consume both bone tissue and tooth enamel suggests that the mineral salt hydroxyapatite might be an important component of its diet. On the other hand, a chemical solvent that can break down both hydroxyapatite *_and_* collagen that quickly could presumably break down a whole bunch of other compounds, too, which potentially indicates a much broader dietary range than "it drinks your bones" implies. It's frighteningly possible to consider that a Moopsy could digest a Horta.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L Жыл бұрын
This is part of why I think it’s probably an accelerated enzymatic action, rather than a direct solvent? OTOH the bodies once it finished visually don’t leave enough room for the other organs, maybe it does consume everything.

IDK why but the few times a calcivore has been used as a thing in sci-fi they're always terrifying. Farscape and Futurama both did it. Farscape's was even a humanoid sapient. They're always _horrifyingly fast_ predators for some reason. I'm no biochemist or anything but I wouldn't imagine there's a lot of energy in calcium - or maybe there is? Calcium? No, they don't generate any energy when burned. But "bones" are way more than just calcium. We have, uh, phosphorus, some protein in collagen, and fat in the bone marrow I guess? @GSBarlev
@GSBarlev Жыл бұрын
They're likely neotenic, like axolotls, and don't metamorphosisize into their "adult" forms unless exposed to a specific stimulus. I wouldn't expect a predator that complex to be able to reproduce asexually, but given their voraciousness, I'm guessing they're solitary, only meeting with other Moopsies for the purpose of mating. Their elasticity suggests that rather than birthing live young, they likely lay large eggs, though probably only one at a time. These eggs may very well have ossified shells which serve as sustenance to the pre- and neonatal Moopsie Bun (the scientific term for a baby Moopsy), but would make them prime targets for same-species scavenging. In any case, Moopsy likely do not raise their young, with newly hatched Buns learning to hunt and survive on pure predatory instinct.

The way it hunts and feeds is similar in a lot of ways to some aliens from Peter F. Hamilton's Void Trilogy. A guy kept a few of them in his house as security against intruders. During the day they're harmless (although not adorable fluffballs like Moopsy), but at night when a couple of guys break in they drop onto their heads from the ceiling. They then complete envelop their heads and begin to secrete high caustic digestive acids. Within minutes they've dissolved and/or eaten the entire victim. That can't be a pleasant way to die.

That sound it makes when drinking bones is uncanny. The crew didn't have phasers so they couldn't stun it which makes you wonder how the Moopsy defends itself from attacks.

I wonder if this thing was at least partially based on/inspired by Tokomon (from Digimon). Both are small white quadrupedal creatures that are ~50% mouth, full of pointy teeth. Pretty much the only major difference is swapping out tendril-like ears for fluffy cheeks.

Honestly it would probably be a horrible way to die. You would most likely suffocate as your diaphragm would have structure. Either that or your heart explodes as you arteries are evolved to have structure. Then there is the problem with your brain not having a roll cage. If all it does is drink your bones you would probably be more or less alive for minutes. Unless the moopsy gives you that terrier shake. It will sever your spinal cord without bones even a gentle shake would end you. This could be a crap ton of nightmare fuel.

I have my own metabolism theory for the moopsy, the creature is metallic consumer. It converts light metals in bones and marrow and excreted it as an oxide. Thus making it an obligate carnivore who contributes nutrients back into the soil. Thus making it a keystone species.
