One of the biggest issues with New Coke was the branding change. Coca Cola had used essentially the same logo and even the same general shape of bottle for nearly 100 years, and then one day they changed it. It was no longer "Coca Cola", it was now "Coke", it was no longer the stylized Coca Cola bottle, it was the same bottle as every other drink. Any time you take something that people have grown accustomed to and change it up like that, you're priming them for disapproval. Just look at any time they change the design of sites like Facebook or KZbin -- the base functionality is identical, often even seeing improvements, but because the change is so in-your-face, it primes people to disapprove of it, and they will make their opinion known. If Coke had kept the same branding and just quietly changed the formula (which they had already done numerous times over the years), none of this would have happened. Likewise, if they'd changed the formula back but had stuck with the new branding, they would never have seen a resurgence in popularity.

Interesting fact, John Pemberton made coca cola because he had a crippling morphine addiction, so he was trying to make a fun and tasty way to drink the coca leaf which cocaine was derived from because it took the edge off his morphine addiction
