I worked in kitchens for 31 years. I've seen every kind of drama you can think of. I've seen bathrooms demolished worse than Drinker's toilet after a bender and a pre-dawn kebab explosion. I've worked in restaurants I loved that were forced to close, and I've left behind shitty gigs in places that were thriving. I've watched co-workers meet, fall in love, get married, and get divorced. I met my wife working in a restaurant. I've worked through whooping cough, severed digits, and management so incompetent I suspected they were a special needs hire. I have been both the guy holding everything together and the guy who just needed to get out of someone else's way. I look at this movie playing in the background while Drinker praises it like someone who just discovered a restaurant could be a hotbed of intense drama, as worthy of examination as any existing microcosm with characters under pressure, going through the worst and best times of their lives, and I have to smile to myself and think... thank god that's over.
@CrowAthas Жыл бұрын
yea brother! its honestly understated what kind of environment a restaurant kitchen can be. I used to work as a receptionist on a small hotel chain that had its own restaurant as a side business here in Brazil, and every time i ended up in its kitchen for a lunch break or helping with some communication problem with foreigners that wanted their food delivered to their rooms, it was a hot, steamy, claustrophobic environment with any small accident happening needing to be downplayed or dealt with quickly as mass hysteria was always one inch away from blowing up. I laugh when people claim that they "sense the positive energy and love" from the food and that food from a certain restaurant or other has some "magic" in it. Brother, people are often holding on silent screams that some ingredient or other had a whole spoiled package and they now have to make do with other shit. Or that staff A or B is using too much resources and its going to reflect poorly on the performance of the whole crew at the end of the week because they were feeling a little out of it that day. honestly, i'm sure i haven't seen the worst of it and that is what it scares me the most. I was just on the environment for at most an hour at a time, no fucking way i'd take on this shit for an actual living. Hell, i think even working for an A.I overlord like Amazon warehouses do is more relaxing. I sure know that being a school teacher for kids and teens no matter how broken the environment is it never gets on the stress level of a kitchen hell.

I heard MauLer recommend this film recently, so I gave it a shot. Twenty minutes in I had to stop and take a break, because it was reminding me so much of the stress I dealt with when I used to work in a restaurant. More than anything though, I think the single take really helped to capture the pace of a busy shift. When you got people lining up out the door, servers desperate for their food, and customers being pains, and it just doesn't stop, that is the most stressful job I've ever worked, and even just the opening was enough to let me know that these people really knew the subject matter they were portraying. This is one of the most authentic movies I've seen in years. That conversation between the FoH manager and the chef about his swearing? I've had that EXACT conversation before.

Restaurant dramas are now a new sub genre of fiction, at least in literature. There's been a few novels published about it in Québec. Back when I was doing a creative writing as part of my degree, I wrote a short story set in a fancy restaurant, based on my experience as a dishwasher. As a former chef's assistant and kitchen manager, I always knew there was great potential for a great movie about professional kitchens and restaurants. The drama - and, comedy - are never ending. ;)
@MumRah Жыл бұрын
This really hit home. Aside from the very end i can really identify with every character. More importantly, it was so accurate and it felt more like a documentary than a movie. I mean to say that it felt that real.

Every kitchen and restaurant is a compelling, fast paced drama... As a chef being the industry for 8years, trust me when i say you can make a show out of any restaurant.
@DrCheeks Жыл бұрын
Interesting how you say the last place that comes to mind for a fast paced drama is the kitchen of a London restaurant .. I think every chef, waiter or kitchen hand in your fan base had a chuckle at that one😆

Even people like me who simply did office work and filled in my hours with helping out around the place. Thankfully never saw the worst of it, but I know the ingredients. Still remember the fun we had one afternoon when three tour buses pulled up almost simultaneously, I was just serving drinks and taking orders, so thankful I wasn't wait staff.

@Poseiden2 Жыл бұрын
Good review - in an era of CGI overload this one-take drama is all the more refreshing. Graham has always come across as an approachable, down-to-earth interviewee and is a consistently fine actor, whilst Fleymng remains oddly underrated. Having worked in a catering department and witnessed the intensity, strong characters and chaos of a kitchen up close, this looks like a movie that should have been made years ago!

I love shows and movies about restaurants. I started working in restaurants when I was 13 and continued right through college. Washing dishes, cooking, prep, bartending. I did everything but actually wait tables. It was such a surreal experience I loved it. Bourdains book was so spot on it was obvious he had actually had been in the trenches. I also have been watching a lot of British television and movies and find much of it far superior to what’s being done in the states. The acting is often just fantastic. I see some faces I recognize so I’ll be watching this tonight

Honestly the issue with film review and making a business out of it is that 1. It's much easier to write out a script for a video/blog for piece of work that is bad than to properly formulate why one is good, and 2. They have to review what is coming out as it's coming out and usually it's complete shite so more content is focused on shite movies
@artur5308 Жыл бұрын
The thing is that movie recommendations, especially of low budget movies that haven’t been released recently get no clicks. The movie must have really caught Drinker’s heart, otherwise he would have put it on the second channel. By the way, really watch the film. Proves that it doesn’t have to cost 100 mills in order to keep you at the edge of your seat and absolutely engaged throughout the whole thing.
@chayophan3078 Жыл бұрын
I know that it seems as if the Drinker has made a routine of shitting on movies but I've watched his videos for years and nothing could be further from the truth. It's simply a testament to just how deep in the toilet modern cinema has sunk. In short, if the Drinker only seems to submit dismal reviews it's because there's rarely a movie released these days that merits anything else.
@artur5308 Жыл бұрын
@@chayophan3078 if you’re responding to me, I was not suggesting that Drinker purposely reviews only shitty movies. I was only implying that giving recommendations to low budget movies not released recently gets no clicks. Just look how many views his review of absolutely brilliant Whiplash has gotten (released April 2022) compared to when he’s trashing the latest Marvel piece of garbage.

I'd never seen it before, never even heard of it before now, and based upon your review & recommendation, I decided to give it a look. I have no doubt that it's every bit as stressful as this depiction! Saw the Drinker recommend this one and I went on to give it a shot with the Mrs. What a ride that was! The movie was just awesome to watch. I wouldn't repeat it anytime soon, as I felt stressed out during the whole run; but I must say this is one of the best pieces of film I've watched in a while. The acting was superb, especially from the three main chefs. But what really impressed me was just thinking how they managed to get the director, cameraman and microphone to move around the place without ever bumping into the actors, or even a chair in such tight quarters, getting the lighting right all the time, getting the sound right and never projecting a shadow or a reflection. There's a scene where the chefs are all handing each other sauce, salad, meat all around and the camera is right in the middle of it; but you just never see it bump into the dishes a pots. This is true cinematic art as far as I'm concerned.
