It reminds me of Pop. 1280. They just released their third album, 'Paradise'. I would recommend the tracks 'Pyramids On Mars' and 'Chromidia'. // I would also recommend Girl Band's album 'Holding Hands With Jamie'. Start with the tracks 'Pears For Lunch' and 'Paul'. // If you like Sonic Youth's louder stuff, Spectres had a brilliant album called 'Dying' which was easily my favourite album of last year. The tracks 'Blood In The Cups', 'Sink', 'Mirror' and 'This Purgatory' were highlights. Sorry, I got a bit carried away

Here's a few explanations Taman Shud is the name of an unsolved crime in Australia. It's pretty interesting. I guess the singer is mad because it doesn't form part of the national story in a way that other things do "i don’t give a fuck about no Anzacery" Anzac Day commemorates Australian and NZ diggers (soldiers) who died in combat. It's a solemn occasion, pretty atypical considering that other countries celebrate their military might and make a show of it "or Ned getting strung up for being a psychopath" Ned Kelly was a bushranger (Australian outlaw) who was hanged for killing cops, famous for wearing iron clad armour. He's a folk hero to some, monster to others. I guess the singer isn't a fan "i don’t give a toss about no southern cross" the Southern Cross is a constellation that appears on the Australian flag. It's a symbol to some of Australian patriotism in the form of tattoos, clothing etc "i don’t give a fuck if you can’t stop the boats" people trying to reach Australia illegally by boat "i ain’t at a loss if Simpson’s donkey votes" a play on words. Simpson was a digger in WW1 who used a donkey to carry wounded soldiers from the battle field. To 'donkey vote' in Australia is to cast an invalid vote in an election. Australia has compulsory and preferential voting, a donkey voter simply numbers the candidates in the order they appear on the ballot "i don’t care about no Andrew Bolt / or even Harold Holt" Bolt is a conservative media figure, Holt was a prime minister who was lost at sea, presumed drowned "i don’t give a fuck about fuck off we’re full" fuck off we're full is a popular Australian slogan against mass immigration, usually said tongue in cheek in parody of bogans (essentially the Australian white underclass) "i ain’t gonna grieve about no BHP" big mining company in Australia "i don’t care about no Master Chef / it’s as appetising as a whistle blower’s doom" A shitty tv show and Julian Assange reference "i ain’t sitting around being gallipolized" many Australians died at Gallipoli in WW1, it's become a focal point of the Anzac legend "why’d i give a rat’s about your tribal tatts? / you came here in a boat you fucking cunt" I guess this is alluding to white Australians who get tattoos with Indigenous/pacific islander motifs or something. the singer wants to remind white Australians that they descend from settlers who came on boats All in all this is the kind of whiney, "omg so edgy" cringe you can expect from the left in Australia. "fuck western supremacy" go live in a third world shithole under sharia law then. ps if you want real Australian blues punk, check out feedtime

This song came at a CRUCIAL time for Australian politics, especially recently with the UN's almost universal condemnation of the government's asylum seeker policies just today. When people usually think about Australia, it's normally about our beaches, sportiness and the delightfully bogan characteristics of a croc-hunting swagman lost in New York. All the usual tourist traps. But, not enough media speaks of Australia's dark, demeaning political past or present the way this song does. The band Midnight Oil were more or less the 80s equivalent of these guys and more recently, The Presets' "My People" criticised the government's approach to "boat people" back when Howard was still in power. But, they don't have the blunt, fuck-you-tell-it-like-it-is, non sugar coated force that The Drones do here. Arguably the most Aussie song is Men at Work's "Down Under", but I'd contest that a song with applies our cultural bluntness to call out corporate and federal bullshit is a more suitable candidate. With the Australian music industry going through a boom this year, some artists should use that elevated platform to express rage about or inform people overseas of the Australian Government's ever-growing list of fuckups. Yothu Yinda's "Treaty" was really relevant around the start of reconciliation, and some of Courtney Barnett's newer songs have serious political undertones.
