TISM - Whatareya? (You're A Yob or You're A Wanker)
@CarbieWarbie TOP 5 FACTS ABOUT WHATAREYA?
1. So the music video directed by Craig Melville is a complete pisstake of the truly awful early morning TV show called, Aerobics Oz Style.
2. If you're not an Aussie, you might not get the terminology. YOB is short for a YOBBO, which are sometimes called BOGANS. They are the poor, loud, working class, rude and like a beer. WANKER is the opposite side of the coin. They're upper class, rich, run their own business and talk loudly on their latest swanky version of the Apple iPhone.
3. This song was released in July 1998 as the third single from their fourth studio album www.tism.wanker.com but it didn't get much chart action. It peaked at number 66 on the ARIA Charts but it was the highest charting single of the four that was released to accompany that album.
4. There has been a cover of this song with different lyrics. If you follow my music photography (I have been documenting the Melbourne music scene for two decade), you will know that I am the official photographer for the Reclink Community Cup. It is charity event held every year where Australia musicians (The Rockdogs) play a Aussie Rules football match against the Megahertz, which are made up of radio announcers of our community radio (PBS and Triple R). Back in 2016, The Rockdogs recorded their take of WhatAreYa? (Dog or Mega). It was performed live at the Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane, during a Rockdog's Pie Night fundraising gig but it was actually recorded in a recording studio too. It's being hosted on my Soundcloud music channel:
/ the-rockdogs-2016-what...
5. One of the B-Side of the WhatAreYa CD-Single is Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... Untz... which has to be one of the funniest song titles to ever appear on a record label. It's actually a remix of the original Untz song that appears on the B-Side of the Thunderbirds Are Comin' Out CD-Single. Personally Untz should have been on the Wanker album. What were they thinking?
LYRICS
-----------
You're a yob or you're a wanker
Take your fucking choice
So who is your favourite genius
James Hird or James Joyce?
You ever seen a live performance?
Join the wanker club
You thought I meant table top dancing?
You're a yobbo, bub
What are ya? Yob or wanker?
Wankers once used mobile phones
But now that's sorta changing
And yobs once lived in cottage homes
Ain't social change amazing?
If a yob and wanker want a girl
The wanker guy will get her
Both of them are equally ugly
But the wanker hides it better
What are ya? Yob or wanker?
A wanker fights inequality
And for people's rights;
A wanker fights class prejudice
A yobbo just fights
Yob or wanker, wanker or yob
Pass me the brush to tar ya
Make your choice then live your life
Come on pal, what are ya?

I was at the Prince of Wales in St Kilda on a Sunday arvo in '95 helping a mate who worked there & asked him why there were holes in the ceiling above the stage in the band room. "TISM played last night". That was my introduction. Love em.

jawbraeka It looks like their last proper performance was in 2004. In 2008, their guitarist James Paull (Tokin' Blackman) passed away. Damien Cowell (Humphrey P. Flaubert) has had side bands called Root!, DC3 and Damien Cowell's Disco Machine, while bassist Jock Cheese released a solo album entitled Platter. They did release a new version of "Shut Up - The Footy's on the Radio" in 2010 with Jock on guitar and Humphrey singing new lyrics. Have they actually split up? We'll never know.
