I had no idea that Mike was going through this. This family has gone through so much and yet, they’re still standing strong. Amazing family.

Poor Mike. That poor family. Proud of them, The Oilers, and proud of McDavid. I may not have a lot of extra but I'll be making a donation to the Ben Stelter foundation to help get this treatment to Edmonton so other families don't have to make this kind of trip and take on this hardship.

Hi Mike, I also have a spinal cord tumour, but they have no way to diagnose it since it’s in the cord and it’s been about 7 years since they found it and luckily it hasn’t grown a significant amount but it’s affecting my leg pretty badly and I really wanted to say I pray for you and your family and I hope everything helps and that you don’t lose what you have in terms of mobility, etc. I’m counting your blessings that although cancer sucks ass, 5 years ago this treatment probably didn’t exist, and you have the best opportunities available for kicking the tumours ass, and Canadians not having access is just devastating. I know how it feels to be told there’s nothing they can do to help me, and so this is amazing. I hope to see you at the games some day! It’s really hard to get seats for the disabled that are affordable so I don’t get to go at all but I’m a die hard anyway! Play La Bamba Baby!

Looking forward to bringing this life saving treatment to Canada (Edmonton as the first site) - thanks to partners like The Government of Alberta, Ben Stelter Foundation, Edmonton Global and others.

The Oilers should hold a fundraiser to bring the finances together so the U of A can bring in a proton therapy treatment centre.

Rather than sending money all over the world for everyone else, we could just use the ridiculous amounts of taxes collected by the federal government to put a machine in every province and territory. Start looking after our own people first, like the man in the video said, Canada is the only G7 or G8 country that does not have one. Just complete incompetence.

Out of curiosity, because nobody has said why in this video, but why is Canada so hesitant, or unable, to get this type of treatment? I hope it helps Mike, it's truly a tragedy for one family to suffer so much.

Way back when we used to ride dinosaurs to the hospital, I had the good fortune to work with Jim Metz. You will not find a more compassionate, hard-working and smart physician. Too bad he’s a Flyers fan.

Canada's healthcare system is great for your average everyday thing. But when it becomes major surgery, major issues like cancer, it's lacking. Sure, the chemotherapy and surgery (if eligible) is free, but if the doctors can't do it or the patient doesn't qualify, they won't even try. This is because the tax man wants to see value in the surgery and if theoretically the patient is ineligible, they see that as wasted funds. I get it, but at the same time, it kills a lot of hope. This is why they don't do experimental. So while Canada's cancer care is free, it's just surface level basic, none of this advanced stuff. This is just my experience with a parent with cancer

The same is true depending on your insurance in the US. If you’re wealthy and can pay out of pocket you can access these advanced treatments, but otherwise for most people it’s not that different to trying to get advanced treatments in Canada. Just replace “Tax Man” with “Insurer”.

People with cancer have a lower immune system. Getting sick/cold is worse for them than the regular people. Even without covid, it's best for the patient.
