I was just recently turned onto this series... WOW. As an American, I love how incredibly rich the history of the UK is and, being a student of history, I find it fascinating. This history is the partial history of my country because of it's U.K. colonial roots and the heritage of many people from my area of New England. It all has a very real linear tracing to much of the world's history as well. I love it and Tony Robinson is an absolute treasure.

Archaeology and history may be more accessible, the conquests more distinct and the monuments and remnants more durable in much of the British isles, but people were living their lives other places as well. Your own continent is no exception, so I don't understand why you have so many egyptologists and such. I suppose it must be the ability to tie things together with written history which feels neat. I prefer prehistory.

I used to scoff at Francis Pryor and his 'ritual landscape' narrative. Then, I retired and had the time to research ancient history, folklore, mythologies and beliefs. He is absolutely correct. Think: animism, pantheism and ancestor 'worship'. Their world was alive with 'spirits' and 'gods' and even their ancestors, whom they often deified and worshipped as gods. A completely different worldview than that of modern man. To us, it would've been an alien world. An alien landscape.

I wonder how effective the wicker man would really have been as a means of human sacrifice? People always go on about it with reference to the Druids and I feel it needs contextualising. The accusation was made by a culture that routinely fed people to the lions for sport and loved accusing others of human sacrifice, being about the only grizzly barbaric practice the Romans didn't indulge in. The evidence for it in Britain is basically Lindow Man (correct me if I'm wrong) - while we can say he was probably ritually executed, archaeology doesn't tell us for what reason and by whom. Miranda Green points out the similarities with Danish bog deaths, it's a long way to go just to get rid of a cauldron.

Lol Do people actually believe anything on the internet it's such BS filled with sensationalism and misinformation to suit a narrative.
@timflatus3 жыл бұрын
@@myhounddog This one pre-dates the internet by a fairly long chalk. Miranda Green was an improvement on Stuart Piggott's take on the subject. But ultimately the idea that the Celtic Britons practised cannibalism goes back to Caesar - he was basically trying to get the Senate's support to invade Britain. Everyone else was basically what Caesar said

I agree, the Druid culture was much vilified for their spirituality by a culture that would nail men to a cross. Iam quite certain that the Druid culture was driven by a higher cause than conquest.
@ThreadBomb Жыл бұрын
The truth is that we don't really know the nature of druidic culture, except that the Romans thought it would undermine their rule.
@Wotsitorlabart9 ай бұрын
@ThreadBomb Agreed, we know nothing of substance about the Druids. The posts above are romanticised wishful thinking.

I note that when Tony was politely reprimanded by the Welsh expert about his perceptions of the Druids his justified (and accurate) riposte “but they (the modern Druids) are just a 18th Century conceit aren’t they” was simply brushed aside with no further (pertinent) explanation! Tony 1, 18th Century conceits 0. ;)

Agreed. Total emotion with no scientific basis. Always disappointing to see logic over ridden by feelings.

@@karlkarlos3545 Well lets be honest he wasn’t too far off the mark in many instances was he. ;) Indeed, well meaning (if sometimes speculatively motivated) reclamation of ancient history reminds us of the summer solstice crowd, attention-seeking occultists and of course former biker John Rothwell (aka Arthur Uther Pendragon) - who reinvented himself as a “Neo-Druid” whilst also claiming to be the reincarnation of _King Arthur_ , no less! All harmless fun of course but hardly deserving of reverence. ;)

With as windy as it is, it's hard to believe anyone would have ever spent any kind of time there. Another theory is the Druids could have cut out trenches to use as natural, barrier dug-out to help guard against the strong winds.

Tony: "If someone mentions Druids now a days we tend to think of hippies in white sheets on Salisbury Plain, don't we, but do we have much tangible evidence that they actually existed in ancient times?" Ken: "We must be careful because, whose territory are you in now? You're in Wales, we have, living, Druids, our own intelligentsia, who come together for our big cultural festivals.." Tony: "Yes, but those kind of Druids are just an 18th century conceit aren't they? That's a fantasy isn't it?" Ken: "Now, Tony, our Druids today are our intelligentsia in Wales....(goes on with BS explanation)" You can clearly see Ken is so emotionally invested in the idea of the current Druids that he isn't willing to listen to the truth about Druids, he SHOULD NOT be anywhere near any kind of archaeological, historical, scientific, etc. endeavors since he has close his mind to anything that contradict what he wants thing to be, he doesn't care about the truth of the matter, or the history, or anything other than keeping the Druid myths alive. Here is how that conversation should have gone, if Ken would have been honest about the history. Tony: "If someone mentions Druids now a days we tend to think of hippies in white sheets on Salisbury Plain, don't we, but do we have much tangible evidence that they actually existed in ancient times?" Ken: "Well no, there are historical references that could be about Druids in this area, and there are modern Druids here in Wales." Tony: "Yes, but those kind of Druids are just an 18th century conceit aren't they? That's a fantasy isn't it?" Ken: "Yes."

Ken is saying that today’s intelligentsia is analogous to the Druids. We have doctors, lawyers, priests, etc today that fill the same roles as were filled by the Druids such as healer, law-giver, etc.

This is basically just fighting talk. I wish you'd all stop it. Archaeology only gives us certain kinds of information. Where material culture stands the ravages of time it can give us a lot of information, but it rarely identifies individuals, particularly in pre-literate societies like iron-age northern Europe or even specific groups. Modern Druidry is rather more than an 18th century conceit, it begins with Stukeley and has become part of the culture of Wales, Cornwall and Ireland and also given rise to modern paganism. Many academics, particularly English ones would love to wipe away Celtic culture because it appears to interfere with some people's sense of entitlement. You don't have to agree, but you could show a little more respect for people's genuinely held beliefs and cultural identification.
@timflatus3 жыл бұрын
You may as well argue that Methodism is an 18th century conceit. And then wonder why the Welsh seem unfriendly :D

Amazing there was such shortage of coins and metal...when within walking distance there is one of the largest copper deposits in the UK that had been mined from pre history. the romans did try but did not have the tech to pump water enough to find the real deposits but go under ground at the mine and you will see hundreds of stone hammers used to extract the ore :-) to me it makes sense that the last stand would take place with this close by to keep the supply of weapons and tools to hand

I'm wondering if you'd really want to block the only focal point left for a wedding or formal event. I'd keep one end of the space for a stage area and one end for the organ. Move the giant book shelf and put the organ there. If someone wants to use it for weddings, or other special events, keep the alter area as a stage that is a great photo opportunity as well. As cool as the organ is, not many will want it for the backdrop for the wedding event. Keep it a formal presentation area. Love all you do!
