The incredible drumming of Phil Collins. Sometimes, with reason, we hear is the masterpiece of Tony Banks, but wait and listen if it's not too the drummer's masterpiece.

22 years old when he played this. An amazing musician, fashionably despised by ‘the music press’. What a strange country/culture we have become.

His feel and dynamics are spot on. Phil is one of the best prog/rock drummers of all time.

He can lay down the wood, but also can be extremely subtle.

Phil Collins' grooves are the best and his fills SO appropriate to highlight the music. He makes the music flow and improves every other band member's performance. He is a musician's musician.

Later in life Phil wondered out loud how he actually managed to play all of this on his own. There’s just so much to it that it wouldn’t be unreasonable nowadays to utilise two drummers in a duet for a lot of the parts in it…

And live on Seconds Out, this track is incredible. I once tried to keep up on a drum kit: it's fast and exhausting!

@rk41gator He said in an interview, that he found it easy. A natural, but with a dedication to his art and a lot of hard work behind the talent.

@@davidspencer6384 Even his writing he said was spontaneous. I only half believe him because he could say a lot in few words. That is never 'easy' and was carefully worked out. Sure he loved music, but in the 'This Is Your Life - Phil Collins' (1988) several commented about what a work-a-holic he was with insane energy. It all looked and sounded natural cuz he worked hard to craft it! Tons of respect for the man. If I had one word for him it would be "genuine". But maybe it should be modest.

I have been listening carefully to this song for nearly half a century and have never heard the rim-clicks at 1:27 and 1:44 until now. Amazing.

@@StukaUK Closer to 1:45, perhaps, and harder to hear because he's opening the hi-hat at the same time, but by my headphoned ears, the rim-click is there.

⁠@@MasulloEnglish I hadn’t tried headphones until now, so I just played it maybe a dozen times on my AirPod Max at full volume. I’m sorry to say that my experience doesn’t match yours. 1:27 though is clear as a bell.

Arrgh--cut it off too soon (although it did start at the "good part")! One of my favorite pieces to play (I love 7). It's too bad Phil's more known primarily for being the front man when Genesis sold out than for being one of the best drummers ever in rock (and jazz). It's sad that his physical condition isn't what it once was, as he was truly in his element when behind the kit rather than the mic. His playing on Genesis Live ('73) was just phenomenal (and there are some YTs from that era). Seconds Out is also a great live album, and you can't do much better than Bruford (I just finished his autobiography--good stuff that helps you understand why he made the moves he did) and Thompson (you had to be a virtuoso to play with Zappa). Phil's innovation and touch were impeccable and his technical skill enabled him to realize his artistic vision. You can't call him "underrated" as true musicians and aficionados clearly appreciate his talent, but you could say he's "underrecognized" as a drummer. Other musicians make more "top whatever" lists (read: popularity contests), but those of us who know better recognize him as one of the best.

For me, Phil is the best drummer by a comfortable margin. Have you heard the live recording of The Lamb on Genesis Archive? His playing is a delight.

@@davidspencer6384 Thanks, I'll have to check that out. However, I've never been comfortable with the concept of "best" with regard to the arts, which should never be viewed as a competition (it would be better if there were just nominations but no "winners" for EGOT and other such awards). Phil's certainly "up there" and it's a shame, I suppose (not that it really matters) that he's not seen in the same light as drummers such as Bonham and Peart, both of whom were obviously phenomenal (and both seem to vie for "#1" in most polls). But so too are the likes of Bozzio, Colaiuta, Gadd, Cobham, Phillips, and many others who aren't household names, yet they appear on countless familiar (and not so) tracks. For example, check out how many tracks Porcaro played on and his influence on other drummers, yet how often is he mentioned?
