as a switch up, id love an episode on the drum sound on a song from Loveless. specifically the sampling of the kit and how it was treated after being programmed. would be a fun new technique to try

I prefer the original mix. It's okay for something not to sound "modern." In my opinion, terminology like that shouldn't even be used when talking about mixes because it put things in sonic boxes and implies that something has to sound a certain way to be commercially viable in the modern era.

I remember hearing Evenflow the first time through MTV and loving it. Then getting the album and hating the sound comparatively. Realized later the track from the video was completely different than the album

The best mix is the live version of Even Flow video from the 90's. Dave. Honestly, it's the best groove and really the best version of that song, period.. It's better than the 91 studio recording. That's not opinion. That is the best you ever hear Even Flow.

2009 mix is a bit overcompressed. Everything is way too in the front. 91 Breathes and sounds more natural.
@rome81806 ай бұрын
I agree. I also think the fact that the '91 mix uses more reverb helps push some elements to the back and create a sense of depth.

Once I saw an interview with Slash and he said something really true: Everything sounds really different when it's recorded on tape. More natural and real. When it's recorded with computers, everything seems not performed by you. There's a very different sound...

I would have liked to hear a back to back drum playthrough for both verse and chorus so the drum mixes could be better analysed one to one.

Me too. I had to switch back and forth between the two sections in the video to clearly hear the difference. Once you do that, it is very obvious, though!

You Only Live Once by The Strokes, track 1 from First Impressions of Earth (or any single off that album really) would be a cool one. that percussion "clink" in the intro and verse would be fun to recreate, and there's all sorts of saturation happening on The Strokes' sound. I usually clamp a glass bottle of some kind to get that clink 😗

Be curious to hear In Utero era Nirvana, like “Scentless Apprentice” (especially as the album version has the drums fighting against a very loud fuzzed up guitar and Kurt screaming his head off in the chorus).

The problem with the modern mix is that the compression on the whole kit really hypes and crushes those cymbals. That doesn't sound natural to me. They lose clarity and they sound hissy and brittle. Sure the 91 version sounds like 1991 but then that's part of the joy of listening to something from that time. It's like trying to remaster Ultravox but getting rid of the synths.

A snare not on "Crack" lacks energy, the snare on crack is what brings or carries the energy. Now if you, or the song, do not want the snare bringing or carrying the energy, then do what the other 80% are doing....biased old school Hardcore drummer.

Most snares I hear on alot of recordings these days sound dead and flat
@sword-and-shield6 ай бұрын
@@paulyjones3966 Yeah, that is from the CRUSH of the dynamic range. Always kills the crack, unless you focus on it having to much crack from the get, which no one does, then sometimes the limiting will bring in the missing body. But you nailed it with everything theses days, in fact I rarely hear a tune where the snare is bringing the energy in the tune.
