the question of the fleet for the fictional 1930 nation: TBH I spent more time on this than I should've, but I thought the idea was interesting so I rolled with it. BBs...well, I cheated a bit and went with Hood, eight of them, with a pair of Lexington CVs. my whole Idea was I need to dictate the terms of the engagement, so if I can get Hood (or better yet something like her 3 half sisters) so much the better. the carriers are crammed full of nothing but fighters...my strike element is on the island itself. ight cruisers...from memory the Deutschland/Lutzow commissioned in 1929, so technically I think she counts. go with eight those for my entire cruiser screen, save for four British E class CLs for their torpedo battery. if the Lutzows dont count, then yeah, go Counties or maybe an Indianapolis screen. My whole theory with the Panzerschiffe was that I need to put down the enemy cruisers quickly before they start filling me up with Long Lances. For DDs I went with two dozen E-I series DDs from the brits, but with a twist in there of eight French "Super DDs" Of the period with those big guns. again, my whole Idea is to win the gun fight with the Destroyer screen quickly.

One naval question I've never been able to find the answer to in print or online regards the Italian cruisers. I've read a number of times about dispersion problems with turrets with four guns which was attributed to the closeness of the guns to each other. Taking the Zaras as an example but this trait appears on earlier Italian cruisers, why were the guns in their two-gun turrets placed so close to each other. No other navy designed its turrets like this, so is there any advantage to be gained by this constructions considering the dispersion problems?
@CTXSLPR3 жыл бұрын
USS Louisville donated it's turret as a mount for optics in above ground nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. There were some 12in+ gun barrels turned into shielding chambers for radiation research. A US lab had the entire stockpile of spare 16in-50 (20's style) for weird experiments I saw come up on the intergovernmental transfer list 2yrs ago. The 16in-50s aside the rest of it was for reasons of what is known as "bomb carbon" increasing the radiation background of the steel as well as the uptake of Co-60.

40:58 Armor plate at a rifle range: Not a good idea. when I was at NAS Keflavik 45 years ago we had an indoor pistol range. It was 25 yards long with a piece of armor plate at a forty-five degree angle as a backstop. It handled hardball .38 S&W and .45 ACP rounds just fine, but then somebody showed up with a .357 magnum. It spalled a divot about 1-1/4 inches across in the plate. It wasn't deep, perhaps a quarter inch, but that lane was closed down until it could be filled and ground flat again. A high power rifle round would likely also cause damage.

About the wooden decks. As I understand it the wood required a fair bit of maintenance, with plenty of crew time devoted to that; and I suspect its replacements required less. As crew added more and more other maintenance activities to do (like finicky electronics and missiles to babysit), and crew sizes dropped (and personnel costs rose), that may have helped push navies to look at alternatives to wood.

I think I might of confused you with the "delay" part of refits of the QE class BBs, it was for Barham and Malaya as they did not recieve the restructuring of the bridge and superstructure like the later refits of the QEs, also i thought the KGV turrets had faster traverse as well as 40 degrees of gun elevations (or was the elevation with 14" guns).

On the question of if the Germans built synthetic oil refineries for the Japanese. Doesn't make much difference. You need a hydrocarbon feedstock for the plants to produce synthetic oil. As of now, Germany has 39,802M tons of coal reserves. Once Germany occupied Poland, they had access to Polish coal reserves, currently estimated at 29,687m tons. China has massive coal reserves, but the bulk is beyond the area Japan ever occupied. So, the Japanese would mostly be dependent on domestic coal reserves to feed a syncrude operation, a paltry 386M tons, 1% of what Germany had available to feed it's syncrude industry.

Hi Drach. I asked at 4:08:45 about the effectiveness about a strongly modified König class battleship. You rated it lower than an italian battleship, because of the smaller number of guns. But what about Königs huge armor advantage ? The König class had a thicker belt than even a Queen Elizabeth class.
@Drachinifel3 жыл бұрын
It does have a fairly substantial maximum belt thickness, but on the other hand with few and relatively weak guns (even with new shells) it would need to close to a range against modern and modernised opponents where those ships with WW2 era AP shells could punch through anyway.

Not so sure about your theory espousing the outcome being worse at Samar had the US Navy had CV, CA and CL instead of the historical CVE, DD and DE battle groups respectively. I think that the Essex-class CVs would have given a preview of the Yamato being annihilated by carrier aircraft. Furthermore, Cleveland and Baltimore class cruisers would have made short work of the Japanese ships with superior fire control and radar would have made a huge difference in detection of the enemy fleet earlier as well as aircraft scouting from the CVs.

On the 6th QE speculation: I doubt it would be anything with 16" or 18" or triple turrets, because I look at the spare Mk I, twin 15" turrets kicking around: 6 on the Renowns, 4 on the Courageouses, and 4 that ended up on monitors, total of 14, vs the 12 that can be explained by the cancellation of the three R-class. My best guess, if the 6th QE was anything other than a QE repeat, it was a prototypical Admiral.

Just a thought i Had based on my viewing habits, without any insight into youtube statistics etc: I tend to break down such long videos (esp Life streams and patreon drydocks) over days, sometimes a week or more. During this, i dont watch the newly released videos, instead i delay them until i finished the long one i started. I suspect that, should many viewers act this way, it might negatively Impact the performance of videos released afterwards. Maybe these long ones perform worse because most people put them off until they have more time. All i am saying is that it might be worth looking into this and try chopping the release up into multiple smaller releases, maybe Independent of recording. Best Case is i am wrong and every video performs admirely, because the content deserves it!

Question just out of the blue was the Pensacola class light or heavy cruiser
@ovk-ih1zp3 жыл бұрын
When built, the Pensacola's were considered a "Light" cruiser by armor weight. The Washington Naval Treaty set the cruiser classifications by primary armament instead of by armor weight. That meant the Pensacola's got kicked out of the light cruiser (6" guns) to heavy cruiser (8" guns). This change did the "Pepsi's" no real favors. edit: Drac corrected me during the stream, It was the London Naval Treaty, not the Washington Naval Treaty, that broke up designations into Light & Heavy Cruiser by gun size.

If the Americans at Samar were actually as the Japanese estimated them, i.e. cruisers and fleet carriers rather than DEs and CVEs, the Americans would only need to turn east and cycle the flight decks; the winds were easterly, meaning the carriers could both flee at high speed, and fly strikes too, without changing course. At 33 kts, Kurita cannot get them into range, while the big flattops will have better stores of torpedoes and AP bombs. Kurita will have a half-hour or so to surprise, range in, and cripple a fleeing fleet before they are out of Kurita's range, but still very dangerous -- 80 dive-bombers, 80 torpedo-armed Avengers, and a couple of hundred rocket-firing Hellcats. We're not dropping depth-charges or making mock-runs for this.

"Yamamoto being a bad strategist for attacking Pearl Harbor" I mean, what he said would happen if Japan attacked Pearl Harbor was pretty darn accurate and spelled doom for the Japanese Empire, so my gut reaction is to assume he wasn't. Being given bad orders despite knowing what will happen isn't your fault. Its like saying Beatty and Jellicoe were great strategists because of their actions in the Battle of Jutland as the Germans were still penned up.
@andrewszigeti21743 жыл бұрын
The modern tendancy to call cruiser-size and mission ships destroyers is strictly political. As in, politicians consider cruisers to be too expensive and totally unnecessary, so if a navy wants/needs to cover that role they need to call it a destroyer to get it funded. Likewise, frigates now cover the destroyer role, but have to be classified as the smaller ship because it's perceived to be cheaper.

wrt the scenario of all four Admirals being completed. Based on my reading, Hood, alone, of the four, was completed, because it, in conjunction with the two Renowns, were seen as replacements for the three lost at Jutland. In that context, completing three or four Admirals would require Jackie to have failed in his sales pitch to have the Renowns and Courageouses built, so the Admiralty would need three of the Admirals built just to make up their losses, and once that far in, may as well build all four, because they would be using the Mk I turrets built for the four R and QE class ships that were cancelled in 1914. The treaty put Hood's displacement at 41,200, so to clear the tonnage, an additional 123,600T need to be cleared. Renowns never built would free up 53,000. Roughly figure Thunderer and all three KGVs, a total of 91,500T, putting the RN at 559,550, still well over the quota of 525,000. If the Admiralty insisted that it was still at a disadvantage and demanded the Nelsons, then all four Iron Dukes would need to be scrapped. That would put the RN at 529,550T. The Japanese would demand 42,000T-ish ships too, I'm thinking finishing the two Tosas, as they were farther along than the Amagis. What would the US do? The US called the conference because Congress was likely to cut off funding for the 1916 building program, so the treaty offered the US a chance to gain concessions from the other powers before Congress stopped the building program unilaterally. Would the US complete three or four South Dakotas or Lexingtons, for parity? I wouldn't bet the rent money on Congress coming up with the money.
@stevevalley78353 жыл бұрын
Of course, if Jackie had been a better salesman, the third cancelled R-class, Resistance, would also have been reordered as a battlecruiser, using the three turrets that, historically, landed on the Marshal Ney and Erebus class monitors. Then, with three Renowns building in 1916, enough to make up the losses at Jutland, the case for completing Hood evaporates, and none of the Admirals are ever built.

RE the question about people of Black colour serving on Royal Navy ships. In the Royal Navy ships at Trafalgar 22 recognised (at the time) nationalities served on those Royal Navy ships. That includes sailors from America, Canada, the West Indies, East and West Africa, Spain and France (yes you read that right), Prussia, Sweden, the West Indies, and so on, While there were 22 recognised Nationalities, the reality is there were probably 100 or so seperate languages spoken on those decks. This goes further, in the UK during WWII, there were literally riots between British Civilians/service personell against white US units trying to segragate British pubs, facilities and other amenities from the 'Black' American troops. For fucks sake, some of the best soldiers to ever serve under British Colours are the Gurkhas. In the Burma campaign the West and East African Divisions were VERY highly regarded by not only the Indian troops but also the British troops. Now, I am not saying casual racism did not occur amongst Brits at those times, it did, but in WWI all of the Black Combat Regiments served with either the British or the French, NOT with the Americans. In both wars the British and French were far more accepting of 'other colours' than the US military was. Hell, in the US Navy for much of the war Blacks were largely regarded as servants and laundrey/cooks. In the US Army Blacks were considered to be inferior soldiers right up until the point the Americans actually had to listen, decades after WWII. Because you know, Blacks had proved themselves actually fucking good troops given the same training and actually human..... Arguably Whites cannot say the same,and I say that as a white European, but then about 3.5 - 5% of my DNA is Neanderthal, about average for a White European (and by extension a White American), which means we are not entirely fucking human! There were literally towns and villages in the UK during WWII who preferred Black Americans to White Americans, because of the savage racism evidenced by the latter. And thats saying something. They literally rioted when the white Officers tried to segragate. So which of those nations were tuly about freedom? Feel free to spread the Neanderthal DNA around by the way, it REALLY pisses off White Supremacists...and I LIKE pissing them off!

Stern Hook The stern hook, likewise, should be ready to jump ashore at once to make the stern fast. Both the bow hook and stern hook must be at their lines, ready to cast off and jump aboard, when the boat is about to get underway. They should never cast off, however, without orders from the coxswain. The coxswain frequently has to go ahead or back down on one of the lines to clear the landing. Lines should be kept neatly flemish down and the fenders rigged in when not in use.
@stevewindisch74003 жыл бұрын
If that is how they do it in the USN or RN, OK then. But most boaters know (and Power Squadron teaches), that it is wiser to loop the line around the post or stanchion, climb aboard holding the bitter end while the boat is still secure to the dock, then let the dock line go or flip it off when the order to cast off is given. No jumping=no chance of Fail ;)

59:30 You'd really take Nelsons over the chance of having 6 Hoods? I'd think a navy of 6 Hoods and 4 Lexingtons would be amusingly silly.

3:23:21 If you were King of Nimitz, how many typhoons would you permit Halsey to drive through before firing him? Put Halsey in charge of a force charging at the Japanese fleet, putting him in charge of a war bond tour would be like Patton addressing the British war bond tour.

Hi Drach. Any idea what to do/who to contact to value the original manuscript & a signed, dedicated first edition of Dudley Pope's "The Black Ship"? I was left these by a friend in his will. Book is dedicated to a Polish WW2 veteran (not naval).

You probably need to speak to a specialist in rare books, ideally someone who deals with millitary/history books. Peter Harrington of London might be a good place to start :)

1:39:34 Midway is a disaster with all US CV lost and all JP CVs surviving. Drach replaces Nimitz You're forgetting that the landing force arrives at Midway on 5 June with at least enough men to take Midway, the carrier fleet is able to beat of Saratoga and Wasp long enough to get long range land based bombers up on Midway. That takes Pearl Harbor out of the picture and forces CINCPAC/Pacific Fleet back to San Diego Main Side. US Navy not able to support landings on Guadalcanal. The Japanese get the airfield operational. This shuts down the last shipping lane between US/Canada and Australia. Port Moresby Operation is brought back up, goes ahead and is successful. This puts land based bombers in range to hit Australia regularly, and forces the evacuation of MacArthur/SWPA command, followed by the fall of Australia, maybe the fall of India as well and endanger CBI/Chiang Kai-shek/General Stillwell. This is where you can finally get back into the war in Pacific.
@georgewnewman32013 жыл бұрын
Oh, yeah, and more than half the ships sunk at Pearl Harbor on 7 December have to be abandoned by the US when Hawaii is evacuated, leaving them to be raised by the Japanese if they choose.

1:25:22 You do realize that whales beach (today) because of the pings from submarines, right?
@BlackMasterRoshi3 жыл бұрын

@alganhar13 жыл бұрын
Its a hell of a lot more complex than simply 'pings from submarines'. Truth is no one is entirely sure as Whales have beached even before the Oceans became so noisy, however, part of the reason is believed to be the general noise level of the oceans these days, not specifically Submarine Sonar pings. And thats the point, its the huge proliferation of noise generation in the oceans that is likely to be the major issue. There is a tracking app that allows you to track every ship currently at sea, and the numbers are staggering. Most of those ships are generating engine noise, and noise travels far further in water than it does in the atmosphere because of the greater density of water allowing for better proliferation of the sound waves. You would also be surprised at how much noise leaks from human activity in coastal areas, even if that activity is on land. A lot of this total noise is generated in low requencies, which a a dual problem for whales, as first most Whale species hear at lower frequencies than humans can, and lower frequency sound waves travel *much* further in water than high frequency sound waves. In short, blaming it on just submarines is a gross oversimplification. While they are part of the problem they are far, far from being all of the problem.
