The song depicts the harsh inclement economic conditions of the then Ireland, yet it eloquently shows that there runs a unshakeable determination running vividly in the hearts of the poor people:bear the loads given, move on with indefatigability till the merciless cold is over. Luke Kelly superbly mixes emotion with message. Hardly imaginable who else could do as he does.
