I've had photos of this car for years, truly almost a touchstone of history. Breathtaking, transcendent, but as it should be when money is no object...no expense spared by GM. I'm glad it's been restored and now shown...this car has the right owner in Steve. Without getting too deep, a lot of great artwork created by and for really terrible people, but I believe the art should not be destroyed because of past ownership but persist with context...always a risk showing something truly beautiful with a dark past. Gives a glimpse into how the past owners lived. Probably most Americans are unaware of the Duke and Duchess's activities in WWII.

You can see the RR Silver Cloud's sides came from this car. Only thing missing is the A/C. Beautiful and with minimal chrome, it was a hint of sorts to Harley Earl of the future styling cues cars would (or would not) come with. Bill Mitchell wasn't crazy about chrome.

Probably due to cost. Unlike the gadgets on today’s cars which can be cheaply actuated and controlled with printed circuit boards, those cars relied on more complicated mechanical systems using small gears, pulleys, etc., controlled by a maze of electrical wires. Lots of extra parts!

Lou never disappoints with his 'Car Stories', but this one makes me giggle of old family stories. My Grandpa, a lawyer, had a client very friendly with "them". Offered a dinner, my Grandpa yelled: "ABSOLUTELY NOT! I'd never let my wife meet that 'International Whore!". Not firing my Grandpa, instead they had a good laugh! I'd love to know who paid for that gorgeous car, the Royal Family kept them on a VERY tight budget, but I'd guess Jesse (Woolworth) Donahue, a very easy touch for American dough. On 'Duchess's' death, a lot of that jewellery reverted back to Woolworth heirs, finally forgiving their foolish aunt...

the article i have says $14000...i'm guessing it cost a lot more to build but they were friends with Al Sloan, and, had enormous weight as infamous people so prob got a great deal. They traded it in in 1952 for an assembly line 75 limo and Buick wagon

Nice looking car but it almost appalls me that anyone would have the bad taste to put jewelry boxes in an automobile. In the end it’s good comedy. In addition, as a bonus, Steve is not afraid to drive these extravagant things. Another interesting car that we would otherwise never see.

Not to be critical, but I’m surprised that this special car doesn’t have A/C because Cadillac produced 300 units in 1941.
@stude2896

From the limited information I have, this car was built by Fleetwood on a 1941 Cadillac series 62 "C" body and chassis stretched to 136 inches. Apparently the car was used by the Duke and Duchess until 1952. It is unclear if they actually owned the car since they were very fond of enjoying luxury comforts funded at the expense of others. To suggest Cadillac stole the fender design from Buick is historically incorrect since at the time this car was constructed the design of the 1942 Buick had already been set. Apparently at the time this car was built, Fleetwood constructed a car with the same fender design for General Motors VP Charles Kettering. Raymond Loewy evidently also liked the design since he modified his personal Cadillac with the same fender treatment.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor! Wallis Simpson was really a character! A local oil man here in Dallas Clint Murchison Sr one of the then richest men in the World hosted the couple at his mountain retreat in Mexico. She arrived with over a 100 pieces of luggage that required a few trucks to carry up the mountain! She had to flown to the nearest town to get her hair done! Later on rumors around Dallas had it that the Murchisons had paid off the Windsors to visit! $30k was the alleged price they’d paid for the visit to boost their status in society. Clint having heard the rumor replied claimed it’d have been damned lot less expensive to have paid that much to keep them at home! 😂. I am betting Cadillac paid for this fabulous automobile simply for the benefit of having the Windsors seen in it. They were so renowned around the World that newspapers and magazines had photos of them everywhere they went. They weren’t forced out of England and visited often but did live in France nearby. However as Murchison said they were “entertained” at great expense by the wealthiest people I all over the World and probably didn’t spend much time at home.

@ I see you commented on a Buick Electra and Electra Waggoner Biggs for whom IT was named was also a great character only in a much more Texas Ranching heiress kinda way! Google her! Her family ranch so I am told was the one Edna Farber visited when gleaming ideas about her renowned novel Giant! Half a million acres of West Texas land with a home an hours drive from the main gates, Her father or grandfather was wealthy enough to refuse oil to be drilled on the ranch many many years after wells were sunken right up to ranch fences! He finally gave in and masses of the stuff was discovered on Waggoner land. She had a Mansion in Dallas AND 40 Millie’s away in Fort Worth and 40 more miles away in Whichita Falls, never mind the ranch houses! Despite that excess everyone was crazy about her!! Kind of a West Texas Auntie Mame and a famous sculptor of Texas bronzes. Neat lady I hate I never met her.
