We have two 'standoffs' in this one, between Michael and Wallace and between Andy and Dwight.
Not going to lie, there were so many great lines in this one that I couldn't work into the script...so let me hear about it in the comments!
#TheOffice is one of the greatest shows of the 2000s! I’m reviewing every episode with some background, trivia, the deeper meaning, and more. Today, we're looking at the #Duel episode.
Thanks to our NBC overlords for their creation and ownership of the Office. The clips used here are for reviewing and education.

Oscar’s reaction when Dwight says “It seems like you already know” has always been so hilarious to me. Also the end of this episode where Angela gets neither of them is so cathartic in a kindof dark way.

I love the deleted scenes with Angela on this episode. They're definitely too sympathetic to her. She deserves no sympathy. But I do really love how we see her reasoning and psyche.

So I have a different theory about Michael and Andy’s talk. I think Michael wanted to tell him but couldn’t find the words (which we see later in episode where he says that sometimes he starts sentences and he doesn’t know where it’s going and he hopes he will find it somewhere along the way). I think Michael chickened because he couldn’t find the right words but then Andy tells michael through a closed window to give David Wallace hell boss. Michael then changes his mind again and tells him. Because Andy doesnt know. Michael is in the same position of not knowing why he is going to head office which he takes as bad. I think Andy’s clear loyalty to his boss and encouragement made Michael do the same thing for Andy.

@@Mulverine I didn’t explain it very well maybe I am Michael! But it’s what I have always thought because it also reminds me of when Andy got Dwight fired/quit and Andy was always asking Michael where he is going and Andy says he will walk with him. So Michael in this episode asks Andy to walk with him, then the rest is above, Michael not having the right words and deciding not to do it but when Andy wishes him luck and encouragement Michael changed his mind again because of Andy’s loyalty to him. Anyway I am glad someone likes my theory.

@@Mulverine the Wallace Mike b plot is planting seeds for later on this season when Charles is hired and Mike quits and the whole David vs Mike trust thing that ends the season basically with Mike winning...which calls back to when Ryan was chosen over Mike for the job to end season 3 when Jim didn't go for it and the whole Jan deposition stuff in season 4

Angela was a social climber. That's why she wanted to be with Andy. She loved the prestige that came with being with Andy as his family were WASPs. Remember she bragged about his family coming over in the Mayflower and was upset when Dwight tried to belittle it. And when she got with the senator she was all giddy over the privileges and perks she attained by being with him. Bragging about 2 cameras at a dedication lol. Awesome video. And she was low-key jealous of how rich her women coworkers social lives were.

The writers legit made an error making her and Dwight split over something so petty as an old sick cat dying maybe a month or two max before it was suppose to...which was all Mike fault for running over Meredith and Pam fault for forcing everyone to visit her leading to Dwight going to her house to feed her cat and give it medicine....which Angela decided to do....it was a stupid breakup plot point

I noticed that the moment Dwight grabs the bobblehead before throwing it in the trash mirrors the opening sequence when Michael adjusts his Dundee. The pause focuses that moment, as well as adding a bit of suspense about what he's going to do.

It's weird how Wallace doesn't understand what they are doing. They absorbed an entire branch's customer base and effectively dumped a bunch of salary & benefits with the personnel losses from Stamford. I guess the deeper answer is that the Scranton salespeople exemplify the calling card of the company: customer service & being very personable with the customers. Michael (when needed), Jim, Stanley, Phyllis & Dwight know how to turn it on when they need to; Ryan, Pam & Andy aren't as good, so we see them struggle with sales. You can see the disconnect between Wallace & his stuffy, corporate world and the more personal feeling Scranton has. Glad I'm not the only one who sees that Angela's motives don't make any sense. From the moment Dwight kills Sprinkles, almost nothing she does with or to him is done with any real clarity.
@shady_the_one
@shady_the_one 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is the case to a T, because I imagine that when we don't see Michael or any of the other characters from Scranton, Dunder Mifflin Corporate is, well... Corporate. Cold, bland, stuffy. Then we see Michael or Dwight or Jim or even Karen go in and it doesn't feel like it's as cold, but they're in a cold place. Ryan fit right in with the corporate office though, and he also started the fire

Its clear having Jim being an assistant manager to regulate everyone fairly when Mike isn't around thus giving Dwight more free time to focus on sales instead of petty tasks and having Jim motivated to work harder due to his dream girlfriend who he hopes to propose to marry move into a new house with and have kids with is the key to their success....Jim Dwight and Mike all are manager level people and great salesmen....their all at their peak performance in early season 5...Mike is motivated because he met Holly dumped Jan Dwight has Angela back and Jim has Pam...Andy sucks at sales but we find out later he too has manager level potential and the thing is behind the scenes I bet he secretly gives a little of his family trustfund money to the company to make up for his lack of sales and if his family is as wealthy and important as he claims and the show proves then the company can't fire him because of connections they may have created to important investors through his dad...which is why he was hired I bet

Which is funny cause they already had layoff issues in season 1 and 2 and in season 3 they were told they were being dropped until the manager at the other branch screwed their plans up and in season 4 Jan loses her job and in season 6 they get bought by Sabre so ironically season 5 is the only season the branch is stable

I see you take slack over 4/5 for mostly episodes.I agree with you because most episodes where you are rating now are really good episodes. Lol. One thing that I just thought about at the end of the video. Having watched a bunch of your videos out of order and agreeing that the greenscreening throughout the series isn't very good. One thing that came to my mind, the time that this show was originally airing was the late transition between CRT and LCD televisions, Michael famously spending what he thought was a lot of money on what he thought was a large plasma TV. For one, this was all being broadcast at standard NTSC resolution of 480i, and for a non-negligible number of viewers, watched on a CRT. Given these conditions the special effects probably weren't as jarring or obvious. Not having a way to play the show on a CRT anymore, I wouldn't be able to confirm, but these does hold true for a lot of cinema, old special effects look really bad when a full HD or ultra HD remaster is made. The Star Wars prequels I think are a great example of this, the Phantom Menace looks extremely uncanny on the Disney+ version, but it never looked bad before, it looked great. Well, DVDs are 720p, a fraction of the resolution modern 4K releases are, and that upscaling used to make the higher res versions destroy the special effects.
