Why would Duke's heroic behavior, and his sacrifice to save his fellow flyers become some sort of disgrace that taints Maverick? Thats the part of the storyline I never understood. Wouldn't Duke have been lauded for his bravery and sacrifice regardless of whether they were all flying over some country they shouldn't have been.
