Thank you! Nice job Paul. As a fellow "newbie," I'll share some of the tips I have picked up. I have the exact same Missal as you do. Most of what I have to say here is an endorsement of what you already said. 1 - Just GO to the TLM and follow what the others do. No books, just get acquainted with how things flow. NOTHING to be afraid of (have found anyone I asked only too ready to help and answer questions - after Mass of course!); 2 - Then start with the Red book for at least a few weeks; 3 - Then add the handouts with the Propers (the parts that change every day and are to be used with the Red book; 4 - The colors of the ribbons are insignificant. It's more important to use them in such a way that you don't end up crisscrossing them. So (going from left to right at the spine) my purple ribbon is the first one (which I use for the Liturgical Calendar); my next ribbon is white, so I use that for the Mass Propers for that day, and, like you, my next ribbon (green) is on the Ordinary (Mass of the Catechumens) which does NOT change daily. (Two left over until I learn more!) 5 - The color at the top of the page is the color of the priest's vestments for that day. OK. I'm still a newbie, but assume that you now have a lot more to share - so please do!!

Dumb American TLM newbie here. Thank you so much. I have gone to a few Latin Masses this year and have felt like such a dingus. This really helps!

Hey, everybody has to start somewhere. I had a head start because the Old Mass began to be celebrated in 1964 and I was born in 1960. In 1967, when I started attending Mass regularly, a less than solid translation was introduced. But, it was still the Old Mass in English. Then, in 1969, our Archdiocese got the Mass Changes early. Even at age 9, I wasn't happy with the changes. My father actually quit attending Mass at the first sight of a guitar folk mass. The new Mass was celebrated in a way where the sanctity seemed to be lost. By age 12, I quit attending regularly, which saddened my mother. At age 35, after becoming a Pentecostal Holiness Christian, graduating from a Bible college, and being ordained and elder in a local church, I started reading Church history, and found myself returning to the Church. I gravitated toward the traditional Latin Mass, although I did also attend a well celebrated new mass in Latin at times. I could follow the Mass in Latin already, so I was able to begin jumping around the Middle, using all of the ribbon markers. But, if I had been born later, I would have been right where you are. So, I believe your video will be very helpful to newbies to the 1962 Missal.

That is a fantastic testimony to the timelessness of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Thank you for your kind words.

@@paulbuede For us, it is the real Mass. What they shoved on us in the late 1960s was a mess, then in 1969 we got what was labeled the new mass. I refuse to distinguish it by calling it novus ordo. Many people stopped attending at that time and rightfully so.

@@Alexaklr And as attendance at the TLM continues to grow and the "new Mass" continues to shrink, the light has failed to dawn on Rome!!

Taylor Marshall did a video on what the ribbons mean. Basically they are just the color of vestments. It doesn’t matter what color you you use and where you use it. Also the color you see at the top of the pages is what the priest where’s that day.

Father Lasance is the best traditional missal, its pre 1955 change of easter tridium.

I have one and love it. Since it was printed before I was born, it's most interesting to see how they celebrated before the big changes of the 1950s and the 1960s (the worst of all). The missal is quite the study guide and so very informative. A big plus is everything concerning the Mass is in Latin and English, including the bible sections (epistles, gospel, Old Testament). There's a good reason it's such a thick book. My missals from late 1950s-early 1960s only have the Mass in Latin and English, with the the readings and other prayers for each day only in English.

Thank you for the video; but it was very noisy in the background which made it hard to follow you. Otherwise thank you

Thank you for this.

Why would you have all that background sound?
@Alexaklr3 жыл бұрын
In 1962 we only had MASS (the Latin Mass), there was no 'novus ordo' anything. In addition, there was no "ordinary time", there was only the Christmas Cycle (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany) and the Easter cycle (Lent, Easter, after Whitsunday (aka Pentecost)). No "ordinary time". That was some bogus, badly named thing they shoved on us after Vatican II to lessen the significance of the mass. Thanks!

Can this missal only be used for TLM? Or can it be used with Novus Ordo as well?

TLM only

Referring to yourself as a dummy 3 times in first 2 minutes doesn’t motivate me to give you 20 minutes of my time. On to next video.

If you get this, give it a try! I hear where you are coming from (had a similar thought), but I've already watched several videos who present as having more expertise - but are only confusing as they appear to take a lot for granted (i.e., folks being familiar with all the terminology, etc.). If you are new (as I am), he makes some very good points.
