Prior to robbing the card game, killing Jackie Jr was never on the table. Tony was trying to honor Jackie's wish to keep Jackie Jr out of that life. And it wasn't just the cheating. It was being in strip clubs, having a gun on him, constant fuck ups, etc that tried his patience. To be honest, it was one of the few times on the show Tony acted selflessly and tried to act on interests other than his own.

To be fair Paulie was a huge liability and I'm actually surprised Tony didn't kill him when he already showed he had no issue killing people he knew for a long time. A lot of this is a perfect example of Intelligence vs Wisdom. A lot of guys in this show were lauded as very smart individuals, but the problem is that they had no impulse control and constantly suffered from tunnel vision. So while they're master schemers and very calculating individuals, they typically lose sight of the bigger picture resulting in these mistakes.

Killing Ralphie in an emotional rage was probably Tony's dumbest (though not worst) decision. Ralphie was his best earner and, despite being a sociopath, had not done anything to merit his death as far as mob rules are concerned. The money worries Tony has in later seasons could have been avoided if he had left Ralphie alive. Dumbest decision in the show was Phil Leotardo squeezing Jersey for no reason other than not liking Tony and then starting a mob war for (again) no reason.

I think I’ve heard that David Chase has said Ralph might’ve actually killed that horse but I always like to think that Ralph was actually telling the truth and had nothing to do with it. That Tony’s murder of Ralph is one of the big moments and cases of Tony’s anxiety and power complex causing him to nonsensically murder one of his best and biggest earners who is in the middle of dealing with his son in the hospital. I thought about the Ralph murder when the Christopher one came around in the last season. Tony admits he felt liberated because having a junkie around was a business liability for him, that he could’ve flipped. In reality for as much as a fuck up Christopher was at times with his substance abuse and while he did have issues with Tony, historically he was one of the most loyal and loving towards Tony as his nephew right up to the end. He was never going to flip on Tony. It’s just some sick justification for murdering his own nephew. Ultimately AJ mentions to his parents when they all go in for therapy in the last season that Livia said that in the end your family and friends leave you and you die in your own arms. Looking back at the final season I can’t help but think that Tony created that for himself in some ways.

Yes, Vito’s storyline drives home a central theme of The Sopranos: how difficult people find it to change their behavior, even though it’s self destructive. We see Tony go through years of therapy, near death experiences and vivid dreams that tell him deep down he never wanted to be a mob boss, and yet he can’t get himself off that path. Carmela is told straight up by the older psychiatrist that her only shot at redemption and happiness is to leave Tony and take no money from him and she realizes she can’t do it. Jackie Junior is told moments before his death (by losing a chess game to a little girl) that he has to stop looking for short cuts and take his time to learn in life but he ignores that advice one final time before stepping outside and getting shot. I never fully understood the significance of the Vito subplot until I saw it in that context.

So even being a regular guy will be hard because he'll never legitimately make that kind of money. I think he's screwed, being born so rich but without the raw brainpower to succeed in really any area of life. And also being born into the mob, he naturally thinks he can just go into that life. Instead, I think he kept his mouth shut because he knew that Paulie was an asset to him because he knew he could depend on Paulie to come running to him and spilling the beans aboit stuff such as the joke and a bunch of other shit. And since Johnny was a master pragmatist, it was for that reason that he kept Paulies name hidden from Tony. Otherwise he wouldn't have had his little pet bird over in New Jersey who was ready and willing to cough up important info anytime he was in trouble, or when he simply wanted to score points with Johnny and New York.

Adriana grew up in this lifestyle, her uncle is Richie Aprile. She wasn't "green" to the lifestyle. It's the only thing she knew growing up. As for Chris, he does share some blame but if you stop and think about it closely, Chris never actually told her anything that is incriminating or a direct threat to the mob family. He never discussed with her about killing anyone and he even told her that if he was ever Made, she would never know. She kept asking him questions because she was aware of the ceremony for him but he asked her to stop questioning him because even if he knew, he wouldn't tell her. The truth is, the FBI had nothing on the mob through Adriana. What did they actually have? Well, they had proof of a small amount of drugs from Chris and Adriana and an illegal firearm possession that was owned by Chris. The charges they had were individualistic to both Chris and Adriana, no direct threat the Soprano crime family as a whole. Some people will chalk this all up to bad writing or flaws in the storyline, but they often overlook the situation because they are not understanding the effects of the drugs having an impact on their mental well-being of both Christopher and Adriana. Their drug use and addiction was preventing them from viewing things with a clear mind and point of view. The drug use made them panic and both of them made bad decisions. Chris was never an open book with her, so she actually didn't know shit about anything. He'd know that if he wasn't drugged out but he panicked just like she did. The drug problem both of them shared directly resulted in the outcome of Adriana's fate.

I think blaming Adriana for Chris becoming addicted to Heroin and ruining his life is insane. In the second season Chris travels with Tony to Italy and spends the whole trip high as fuck on heroin instead of "seeing the volcanos". It was an issue 2 seasons before Adriana was ever even presented with that choice.

Tony B had so many things in his life go wrong, that he couldn't handle it when something was going right. Him attacking Kim, when there was every indication that the spa was going to be a success, was purely self-sabotage. I think that Blundetto was so rude to Tony when he first got out of prison because he was trying to create distance. But it didn't work, Tony pulled him back into the life anyway. Tony B knew he was essentially powerless to stop it. Maybe he torpedoed the spa because he knew Tony would eventually get his hooks into the place and would rather destroy it than let Tony pervert his dream of going straight.

I’m surprised Tony getting frustrated and giving his mom stolen plane tickets didn’t make the list. Sure his mom unexpectedly died before that could become an major issue for Tony. But I think it’s safe to say after how Livia played Junior against Tony she would have taken full advantage of the FBI stolen ticket situation and likely sold Tony out as revenge for Green Grove. At best Livia uses that situation to get the maximum leverage over Tony for whatever she wanted from him. Tony absolutely knew by then that given the chance to harm him Livia would do so in a heartbeat. Also surprised Paulie going after the Russian for no reason in Pine Barrens didn’t get a mention. Yes technically we never hear about the Russian again with no revenge ever taking place from Slava. But if that Russian did make it home in one piece Paulie probably gets whacked. If not Chris by association and maybe even Tony and other top guys like Syl if things continued to escalate like they did with Phil at the end

I think Vito, returning to New Jersey, was probably the single dumbest idea. Or even the places that he was meeting guys, that was really dumb in itself. I mean in that day and age even no social media wasn’t a thing but you could still go online and meet people. It wasn’t 1983 where the only way to meet someone was to go out to the club. You should’ve been doing things like that in a hotel two states over if he was. After that, I think some of the worst decisions were made by Tony himself in the last season. I think he could’ve prevented Carlo from flipping if he just didn’t let everyone know that it didn’t matter if you were loyal or not, but the size of the envelope was all he cared about . I think treating Christopher better through the years would’ve also helped out immensely. Tony was the one that forced him to get clean in the first place and then the last two years that he’s around Tony constantly belittle him for not having a drink. I’m sure if Tony could’ve seen the future I think he would’ve realized that he needed everyone that he could have around him once we get towards the end of the war with New York. Out of all the people that were close to him when we first meet him in season one, the only one that’s really a part of his inner circle at the end is Paulie.

Great list and I completely agree that Vito's decisions were the dumbest. Let me add a couple three other dumb decisions: 1) Christopher killing the newly retired cop. Even for a dirty cop, there had to be a massive investigation into his murder. Chris must've left some finger prints while smoking and watching TV. Other dirty cops would have gone to their sources to find out who did it. 2) Christopher and Paulie killing the waiter. He was waiting on THEIR table and the police would've figured out he had been stiffed. 3) Tony killing Ralphie. Tony's lack of Gary Cooper-ness was triggered by the noble stallion's burning to death (the corpse being dragged off was one of the saiddest scenes in the show) and Ralph's flippant comment about Tony's beef and sausage intake. Raphie's disappearance, mourned even by those who would not urinate on him to put out a fire, caused suspicion and dissent among the ranks. Furthermore, Ralphie was practically minting money for Tony and the family. His death started Tony's financial downturn that plagued him for the rest of the series.

For me I could never wrap my head around the whole Benny and Artie feud. Benny using the boss’s childhood friend’s business to steal credit card numbers, and physically attacking Artie for retaliating, always seemed like stepping into No Man’s Land. Especially when an earlier episode had Ralph refuse to lend him money, because Artie was off limits. It felt like a dumb decision by Benny, and an even dumber one by the writers when A) he should’ve never considered pulling that, and B) the fact there was no consequence for the scheme.
