In The Sopranos, Tony Soprano is angered when Phil Leotardo whacks Vito Spatafore, who was in hiding. But how did Phil know where Vito was hiding. Who snitched on Vito

@@josephmorgan3881tbh I think the whole “Phil is secretly gay” argument is dumb af. Could’ve just been a joke by Chase that he came out the closet referring to Vito being out the closet now and exposed. Phil is old school. He represents old school Mafia. He never ratted. He did his time. Even Johnny Sac admitting the existence and his ties to the Mafia pissed off Phil. Phil was even given the idea to kill Tony earlier in the show. Even tho he really wanted to, he said he couldn’t because it goes against the rules (referring to John Gotti’s hit on Castellano he says “it was wrong then and it’s wrong now!”). So his resentment toward homosexuals is actually on par with his character. People back then didn’t tolerate it Tony represents the new age Mafia. Does drugs, gives FBI information on other people (Arabs), is friendly with FBI agents (Agent Harris), openly bangs girls and almost banged his nephew’s fiancé (Adriana).

The way in which Phil was tipped off just isn't that important, so the writers glossed over it. As you pointed out, Vito had tons of people looking for him, so if he was in Jersey, it was only a matter of time until somebody found him. I think this situation is similar to the end of the show - who actually was responsible for Tony's death? The show is in essence telling us, "it could have been just about anyone", so the writers don't worry about answering the question directly. Vito's whole character arc is so sad - he had an opportunity to restart his life in New England, and leave his old ways behind. But, Vito can't resist the action and returns to Jersey, and seals his fate.

@@rickyclover9393 im not claiming it was simple, I claimed only that it was an opportunity for a new start. He could have lived an authentic lifestyle with a man who loved him, and he loved back. Vito didn’t return for his wife and kids. He returned because he didn’t like real work, and he missed being somebody in the mob.

@@iamamishExactly. He coulda gotten his wife and kids to move up there with a little effort or made some other arrangements. If that was too dangerous and the relationship with Johny Cakes was serious enough they all could've relocated where it just wouldn't have been worth the trouble for anyone to follow. Yes, his wife would not be a fan but if he was just honest about everything she seemed to care enough to be more understanding than most. He seemed to genuinely love his kids and even his wife, rather it was romantic or not is irrelevant, so it was definitely possible. But that wasn't his only or even main reason for returning. He had some very antisocial personality traits and loved the power, respect, freedom to basically do anything, the cash, staying out til sunrise and sleeping half the day, being in a relationship where he could pretty much come and go as he pleases and do whatever he wants with little interference, etc, and life there with or without his family wasn't that by a lot.

You got that right. Doria borrowed the $20g's from Vito while at the grocery store and, though not shown, followed him to the motel and gave up info to Phil. Sammy The Bull had a similar thing happen once, or almost happen. A guy had called Sammy to help him hide 800lbs of Marijuana, and when Sammy got home with his car full of 800lbs of weed, and 3 months behind on rent, as it was when he was young and just stating out with a brand new baby, he seriously considered shooting the guy to keep what would have been about 350k worth of product back then. Ultimately he didn't do it, and the guy gave him 5k as a thank you, but the thought process is authentic, to say the least

This theory is very credible, and here is an added element: After Vito is whacked, Fat Dom just happens to appear at Satriale's, and he then appears to goad Carlo, before he himself is whacked. This could somehow (I have not thought it through yet) be a connector to Carlo being involved in Vito's death. You will recall that at the meeting where Finn described his witnessing Vito and the security guard, Carlo was then one of the more outspoken ones calling for Vito's head (no pun intended).

I agree with you. Before you posted this video, I was under the impression that the PI had probably tracked him down. Before you pointed out the stuff, I just assumed that the dude borrowed the money not because he set him up, but because he knew that no matter what Tony decided, someone was going to kill him down the line eventually, and he was just being clever and taking advantage of the situation, with a marginal chance that he was going to have to pay it back. Great video. I've been watching your channel since you started talking about "The Irishman". Keep it up man!

In a complex series like the Sopranos, there are certain things we as viewers are meant to infer, connecting the dots. Then there are things left open ended and there's only the illusion of an answer. The question how Phil managed to track down Vito is one of those instances. We see Tony Soprano tracking down several people during the series, such as Tony Blundetto and Phil Leotardo. We see Phil in action looking for Christopher. It's likely he has his ways. As an audience, we're meant to be left guessing. Furthermore, the fact that we don't see Phil closing in on Vito is intentional: it adds to the shock. Like Vito, we imagine him being relatively safe, flying under the radar for now, only to get jumped in his own motel room where the goons are already waiting for him with baseball bats. How did they get in? We don't know, which makes them seem almost supernaturally powerful. Like bogeymen, they just appear out of nowhere, carry out torture and execution, and vanish as they please, leaving the victims desecrated corpse somewhere. Even Phil's entrance, stepping out of the closet into the light is like something out of an old horror movie. Like he's the mummy stepping out of his sarcophagus, or Dracula stepping out of his coffin. (And then there's the subtext of Phil being 'in the closet', giving him a motive to project his self-disgust unto Vito.)

Phil and his guys got into the hotel room without forcing entry, like when Vito comes back to the motel room he has to unlock the door. So somehow Phil was able to get a key or one of the guys snuck through a window or something. But if Fat Dom is one of the guys involved I doubt anyone snuck through a window.

I never understood, how specific guy who is appointed by the boss to joint projects is considered valuable because he brings in so much cash from said project? like, they appointed Ralph to oversee the big building project and as a result brought in millions, but... couldn't Tony & Carmine appoint someone else? I understand each member has his own connections and ways of making money but they only mentioned the huge income from said joint projects which was brought to life due to the bosses' connections (Tony & Carmine). I was always confused on this point.

I think New York had someone at that motel on thier payroll. That's one way they could've known his room number and to get in. Or Terry and Carlo told them.

I think Phil bribed a certain Puerto Rican hoowah with a couple of Silos to drop the dime on Vito.

Just want to add that the way these guys operate, what I’d expect would be that since the meeting with Doria was prearranged, Doria or someone he was working with probably arranged for someone to be waiting in the parking lot to follow Vito as he left. They then probably kept tabs on Vito until Phil could get to the motel, Phil goes in the closet (lol), then they get set up to kill Vito. It would be a way for Doria to “get paid twice” which these guys do whenever possible. Borrowing money would be a plausible excuse to draw out Vito for a meeting considering Vito knew he basically had a mandate to spread money around, and Vito probably wasn’t suspicious of the car that fired up just as he gets in his car, followed him several car lengths’ behind, then pulled in a parking lot across the street and watched which room he entered. That’s my best guess, anyway.

8:09 statue of a guy with a baseball - it’s American Italian actor and comedian Lou Costello and the baseball bat references his famous Who’s on First routine. The Memorial to Lou Costello also appears in another Sopranos episode. I’m not sure that it foretells Vito’s death. And if memory serves they bash him with a pool cue not a baseball and the pool cue ends up where the sun don’t shine.

Yeah, it was Terry. Part of the reason Tony didn't kill Vito is because he didn't care that much. If Vito had stayed gone Tony wouldn't have sought him out to punish him, while Phil would have never stopped searching. It was the one of the few times that Tony didn't seem to feel that his manhood was being threatened. It's not a traditional crime show, but you would murder "Succession".
