The Mariners are the only MLB team in the last 50 years to have the tying run on 3rd with nobody out in the 9th inning or later only to lose the game in the span of 2 batters without putting the ball in play or trying to steal.

As a MLB player he should not done that regardless, mainly because if he listened or watch the ball he could have ran home if it was a pass ball and the batter never made contact with the ball. If he never ran so far non of it would happened. Yasiel Puig is not in the MLB partly because of plays like this.

Unfortunately, Julio has repeatedly shown the lack of situational understanding on the bases since he has been in the league. This play was the epitome of it. He has a rec-league attitude. In his exit interview after the season (and any follow ups), the team needs to emphasize the need for him to be mentally focused. He's a world class talent with a nonchalant attitude that's frustrating for fans to witness b/c it doesn't seem that he wants to great. It's something that M's fans, after watching Junior and A-Rod come up, just aren't use to seeing.

As a life-long Mariner fan, this is the most Mariner thing I’ve seen in a long time. Yep, situational awareness. It’s fine for Julio to be happy-go-lucky most of the time, and it’s why he’s a fan favorite. But when it’s time to lock in, he needs to f-ing lock in. Griffey’s nickname was The Kid because he had that same kind of style. But he was also an incredibly smart ball player. He was happy-go-lucky and locked in at the same time. Great take, but this is inexcusable.

I think the biggest problem for Julio is that there hasn't been enough veteran presence on the team in 23 and 24. In 22 he had Santana to help him find balance. This is what dipito doesn't understand when building a team: Chemistry and leadership.

He reminds me of wondering why the Dodgers were willing to take on Manny Ramirez. He was a phenomenal natural hitter, but otherwise if you put your ear next to his you can hear the ocean. But then again he, or at least his agent structured a deal where the Roid Sox are going to be paying him 2.5 million dollars a year for the next twenty years. So maybe he's not a complete cement head.
@gregneedoba39273 күн бұрын
You hit the nail on the head- his style of play, the happy go lucky, always smiling, interacting with everyone around him in a playful way, while it makes the game fun to watch sometimes (and believe me I’m all for players letting their personalities shine on the field because it’s makes them relatable on the human level) there IS A TIME AND A PLACE! This might go down as one of the worst season defining moments in what has been a rough couple of decades here for the Mariners. A season they were supposed to be great, they weren’t, they struggled, their manager got fired, they were still clinging to an outside chance at a wild card and they had a chance to pull out a win here and at least in this circumstance with a runner at third and nobody out had to tie it to keep the game going…..and he gets picked off of third because he is simply not focusing on the game. It can’t happen.

When i heard this on the radio (cause I'm not paying a subscription for a regional game thats crazy to me) i thought the bat almost hit him and he took a step or to in order to recover. Seeing it this was the biggest blunder, it was somehow worse than trying to steal home on a 3-0 count.

Everyone's talking about the player but nobody is talking about how uncommon this very specific situation is and how this should be a dead play unless he started running towards home. He dodged a bat, he struck out, the plays over unless he started running home. This is an MLB issue. Lay off the player.

There are definitely some players in the league today that need to be transported back to the 70s for an entire season and learn the "hard" way how to play the game like a serious professional. These flippant attitudes wouldn't last 10 seconds, either on the field, or in the clubhouse.

I appreciate that you are being tactful with this because I think the very general baseball fan would not see or agree with what you’re saying. But I have been thinking this same thing and even mentioned to my wife on multiple occasions that the way some of these guys play now is very frustrating to watch. You said it very well and I couldn’t agree more. I would take it a step further and say, in my opinion a lot of the fundamentals of the game have gone or diminished in favor of the “show”, the entertainment factor. I watch guys like Randy throw the bat so many times, that along with his other antics tells me that’s just him thinking there are no consequences for those actions. I see our guys getting hit all the time and is there ever any retaliation? No. I need just a little old school mentality brought back into the game to mix with the new school thinking and it can still be entertaining. As someone who played baseball through college and wished I could have made it where these guys are, it frustrates the hell out of me to watch them laugh and high five the other team when we are losing or playing really poor baseball. I’ve invested a lot of real money into this team because I love baseball and I believe they have the ability to go far. They get paid more than I will ever see in my lifetime. And to watch this.. it truly hurts. I want better for my baseball team

They paid him too early. Proof is in the stats. I notice his unfocused attitude pretty much every time I watch him play. He actually didn't belong in the All Star game a few years ago. MLB wanted him there because it was in Seattle and they wanted to showcase a young "star". He ended up having a great 2nd half but didn't deserve the nod. It's a shame because he's a super talented, five tool player. He needs to get his head out of his *ss
@justadudeintheworldman.1204 күн бұрын
I get trying to recollect yourself after a bat comes flying at you so I think he does deserve a little leeway for that. With that being said, to have your star players have the bat flying out of their hands every other AB and your other star chasing butterflies…let’s just say that ain’t it. I look at it from an owner or GM perspective, I sign hundreds of thousands of dollars in checks each month to these guys. That is what draws the line. Not paying you to talk to your friends or smell the grass in center field. You can have fun of course, but you need to win. Win and have all the fun you want.

By the way, I think your comments on Julio Rodriguez is spot on. There was a game earlier in which the Astros' outfielder Trey Cabbage robbed him of a homerun, then did a tuned-down version of his own "no flyzone" gesture. As Rodriguez stopped rounding the bases after he saw Cabbage caught the ball and did that gesture, he was laughing so hard, at first I couldn't understand why would someone be so happy after making an out and getting mocked on. But now I know, thanks to your analysis. I think it's okay to have someone on your team with that kind of "it's just a game, let's have fun" attitude. But if that player is your leader, then your team has a problem. The Mariners have made Rodriguez as the face of their franchise, and they will have to live with the consequences.

Julios not all there. He got a megadeal as like a 21 year old, without having to prove himself at all, got some hot athlete gf, spends all his time posting vacations and fancy clothes on IG. He seems more interested in being a flashy star with his diamond cleats and his various elbow sleeves than really focusing on baseball. Unfortunately weve seen this before in seattle: Griffey was so naturally gifted he never had to try hard, so near the end of his career he just got fat and got worse, and Russell Wilson getting high off his own farts so bad it alienated his fans and teammates

Thanks for addressing the Julio problem. He plays like a commodity instead of an athlete because he's encouraged by interests who believe it will profit them. What we've been witnessing this entire season is what that strategy really achieves: systemic failure and collapse, and perhaps the destruction of a genuine talent, a young man in need of real mentors, not thieves.

I don’t understand his mentality. Yes he got paid but they paid him to live up to his potential. I think if you get paid an unbelievable amount of money you honestly show the type of disconnect like Julio does you should owe that money back. There was a guy in every childhood street ball group who was so talented that he tried to make every single play look cool and who got away with it because of talent and charm. That's Julio so far. He's baseball id - pure impulsivity + the desire to look good at all times, which is frustrating after three years when he should be maturing and developing. To make matters worse, his corporate team and local media never call him on his shit, and the M's have gotten rid of the stable leadership vets like Geno Suarez who balance out the butterfly personalities. Instead, they added more impulse guys who try to steal home on a 3-0 count, chase bad balls, step out of the box, etc. Cal Raleigh is one of the few adults in the room now, and in the overhead video of this debacle of a play you can see him standing on first base with his hands on his helmet like a frustrated dad. Perfectly encapsulates this current team.

Signing Julio foot 10 years was a marketing move. It was about money not winning. They thought they had a super star for a bargain basement price who they made the face of the franchise. He was an unproven rookie who occasionally had a month long hot streak. The Julio we’ve seen over this season seems to be the norm. I’m waiting and hoping for him to prove me wrong, but I’ve yet to see him as an intelligent player. He’s pure emotion. He wants to be the hero which leads him to try and murder every pitch he sees rather than putting an appropriate swing on the pitch he’s given. I’m in my 70’s and have reached the unfortunate conclusion that I may never see a World Series in Seattle in my life time. I guess I’m a slow learner…

Bro I say this with no ill intent but that little league story was waaaayyy longer than it needed to be. When you’re gonna tell an anecdote and tie it to something else, you need to tell that story a little quicker. It could have just been “it reminds me of a little league game I had when I was pitching, and a kid made contact to right field, and I turned around and the right fielder was completely not paying attention and was chasing a butterfly. I learned that not everyone views the game the same way.” All that background stuff about the bases being loaded and you lobbing the ball, it just was irrelevant to the point and could cause some to tune out

Think you’re on point regarding Julio. Don’t really understand he took the foul ball territory to avoid the baseball bat projectile. The trajectory of the flying bat definitely pushing him further away from third base than when he would have chosen the infield territory to avoid the flying lumber. And where I do agree on the butterfly aspect of Julio’s strolling even further, it all started with Arozarena who apparently can’t keep a baseball bat in his darn hands when hitting or missing.

I'll preface my comments by saying I'm a Tigers fan who lives out in Seattle so while the Tigers are absolutely who I root for I care about the Mariners but from an outside perspective. I think you're 100% on the money when it comes to Julio and how he approaches the game. There are lots of guys with similar attitudes to Julio, he's certainly not alone but you also just don't see the true 'gamers' ever make mental errors that frequently (or costly). From the outside looking in I didn't think the Mariners had a chance in hell to be an impactful playoff team this season, you can't win games with regularity with that kind roster of position players no matter how talented that young staff is. It's a shame such a pitching staff was wasted and I don't see much offensive help in the system for the future, DiPoto's gotta go.

I heard a bat make contact but it happened almost at the same time that the batter on the other side of the fence hit a foul, so I kept watching, but then I noticed...oh everyone on my team is turned towards me and yelling something. So I'm looking at them confused and then hear the unmistakable sound of a popfly landing in the grass a mere 10 feet away from me... But our season was almost over, we'd only won one game (by forfeit), and I wasn't being paid millions per season.

Shouldn't that be a dead ball? Would anyone really want him called out for a baserunner specifically dodging a baseball bat? Depending on where it hit him it could have done some serious damage. You hit the nail on the head, there's always going to be the type of players to play lose and the type of players to play extremely serious (sometimes almost too serious as taking being overly seriously can ruin your mindset especially when you're struggling), but every player needs to have have some situational aweness .... while this is hands down the stupidest thing I have ever seen on a baseball diamond, had this happened in game 24 at the end of April then whatever, let's laugh it off at how stupid it is and move on, but come the end of September with roughly two weeks left in the season you need to be situationally aware that it's time to lock it down and stay focused .... hell even if this happened in the first inning of the game then maybe we can just laugh it off but when you're the tying run in extra innings it's absolutely inexcusable that you aren't locked in and focused on the game. Julio was 100% chasing butterflies and I hope that teams refuse to give that big dollar long term contract now knowing that he has zero situational awareness

I actually love this as a mariners baseball fan.. this is peak mariners baseball and I'm here for it.

I just keep trying to tell myself that he’s only 23 and has been leaned on since he was 20. But at some point he has to grow up. I hope this is his “ah ha” moment.

I didnt watch the game, but listened to it, it was frusterating to hear the call over the radio, but once you saw it, it was ABSOLUTELY THE WORST MISTAKE I've seen in baseball! Even growing up playing ball, the rule is and will always be Eyes on the ball! While Juilo could of taken a few steps to the right, we still would of tied the game (Likely not winning it), would of been fine! He also wasnt calling time or looking for time from the umps! SO DAMN STUPID! Now they are 2.0 (3.0 Tiebreaker) back in the wildcard and 4 or 5 from the AL West. This cost them to now only need to sweep TEX & HOU but maybe needing to go out with a 10-0 record to finish (I think) but it wont happen!

For this to happen 2 games in a row? Coaches need to take a serious account of themselves.

Did you watch today’s game, 8th inning, runner on 2nd made a blunder trying to advance to third on a ground ball towards the shortstop. They bunted him over to try to add an insurance run only to get called out. Luckily the closer held it down and mariners still won

Its real simple... I guarantee Julio's brain told him that it was a baseball off the hitters bat coming at him not a bat because anyone thats played the game knows when you're leading off 3rd base a line drive hitting you is always in the back of your mind. People that played the game will understand this...couch potatoes not so much. The real dummy is the guy who threw the bat which means he was trying to pull the ball..when he should've been looking to drive the other way... terrible at bat

The way I see it is Julio saw a projectile flying right next to him, he gets out of the way, no duh he forget about the situation, that could've broken his bones or injured him bad.

Here's a serious question. With how Julio is mentally. Is it only a matter of time before he gets in trouble off the field?

Don't worry, Seattle will play that 1995 win against the Yanks all off-season like they have done since, well, 95.
@m.t.v.79342 күн бұрын
Yea this was a sloppy series for Seattle. The Yankees have been lucky over the past 10 games, they have not been good but other teams have just been worse. J-Rod plays baseball sometimes like he is high as a kite. Just about as bad as the Martian missing routine flyballs in the outfield. Damn Kids!! LOL

I think you could have easily got your point across in more like 3-4 minutes -vs- 13 minutes. Talk about long-winded!

The front office and ownership created this mess with Julio when they gave him a franchise contract in year 1. They rewarded him and told him never to change when he was promoted to the big leagues. They marketed him as a franchise player. If he was in a reputable organization he never would have received a franchise contract in year 1 and would have had veterans around to teach him how to play the game the right way while he was still making the league minimum and earning his worth like the majority of players have to do until they hit free agency. I have had a problem with the way Julio carries himself on the field all season. Often times he would look as if he is staring into space. And I understand the need to smile but smiling when you swing and miss at a pitch is just infuriating. For me Julio and the Mariners front office that enabled him is the biggest disappointment not just this season but in my 35 years of being a Mariners fan. I'm not sure Julio is the type of person who will change or this is the organization that would demand it.

I swear the Mariners are intentionally throwing games. They know their bats are garbage, and that would make them look foolish in the postseason, so why bother trying?

@@Triton63 yeah but if the coaches are coaching terribly on purpose so they lose wouldnt that be throwing games

Julio ... not a fan of him nor ichiro..I'm a Griffey,Martinez, buhner, big unit, all the old school players fan ... competitive and seriousness.. can't stand "no fly zone " gesture...but assist opposing team a home-run..how's that a no fly zone.. Griffey was unbelievable and amazing to watch in the outfield..
