You can’t just say “he’ll figure it out in a few years” we never know and with his play style I doubt it he swings super hard to hit more homers and he throws super hard and makes more errors

@@Baseballify he will figure out the balance of swinging hard and throwing hard. The plays he makes are spectacular, and if he has an Error every couple games its alright

Hes already top 25 for sure Dudes over 5 war. And positive dwar Nobody's even been in his ATMOSPHERE when it comes to electricity- the legs and the arm When he's mid-late twenties, he could be an all timer. Think Bonds at short (minus the roids and walks, plus on speed)

I wouldn't call Elly one of the best, nor one of the worst defenders. Even taking into account errors charged to him on difficult plays where his incredible range allowed him to even attempt, or ones most shortstops wouldn't have even had a play on. The amount of routine plays he botches does hold a lot of weight, no matter what kind of advanced analytics you choose to look at. He's not one of the best defenders, but he does have probably the highest skill ceiling potential due to his stature, range, speed, and arm strength. He's made some incredible plays that probably only he could make. But when you look at the amount of outs/runs that's saved vs the outs/runs that his routine errors have created, he definitely comes up negative. You're putting waaaayyy too much weight on his run/hit saving plays to argue he somehow comes out ahead in that equation.

war this war that, errors as a SS can kill not only innings but games, series and even seasons, good luck proving the war stats of de la cruz when they're in a game 7 and he gives the home team a run thanks to a routine catch error. its not hard to say that he's very very very prone to errors even at his age and since he have a very high ceiling in fielding he should adress that soon, not "hey de la cruz is really good even when he's bad"

Error percentage does account for range. Guys without range may get fewer plays, but they have fewer made plays so it's a wash in percentage. Most of those errors you showed were errors. I'm not arguing that his range helps a lot, just that your argument needs to be tightened up there. I'm in the "he's a great defender" camp and would rather have a defender like him than say, Jeter. WIth his speed I think maybe swinging for less power and putting the ball in play more could help. Trade 10 HRs per season for 70 points of batting average and a chance to wreak havoc. For a slow player hitting HRs is more important. With his kind of speed though...

How good is Zach Neto compared to Eli? Neto has BWAR of 4.7 compared to Eli's 5.1.would Mookie Betts have a higher WAR if the Dodgers kept him at shortstop instead of moving him to rightfield? The Dodgers must think they're a better team with him in RF, but if you have a higher WAR a lot of people assume that makes you better. A lot of people want to vote for MVP based only on WAR. There's 18 shortstops with over 3 WAR compared to just 4 first basemanand 2 DH

for those who hate on Elly, get a fuckin life. He's going to get MVP votes at 22 years old, everyone else has higher strikeout rates but he's only person people notice, many of those errors are from the beginning of the year and he's gotten so much better since then, and he leads the reds in just about every stat
@wyssmaster
@wyssmaster 2 күн бұрын
Everyone notices his strikeouts because he's tied for the second highest strikeout rate in the league, and is one of only five players with a K rate above 30%. And no one cares about him leading the Reds in basically every stat, given the fact the the Reds are a team of garbage players and one legitimately good player.

You can use numbers to favor an argument for or against a player. The eye test is often the best way to judge a player. Elly is someone I’d pay money to watch play. There’s only a handful of those players in the league.
