The DUMBEST TRADE REQUEST in New Orleans Saints HISTORY

During the 1973 NFL offseason, New Orleans Saints quarterback Edd Hargett demanded a trade, as he wanted more playing time since he was riding the bench behind Archie Manning. On the surface, that seems like an incredibly valid reason to request a trade. But when you dig deeper, and realize the moment that led to the request, and why he was upset about his lack of playing time in particular, it devolves into a situation that truly makes no sense whatsoever

Fun Fact: Former Saints QB(since we're on Saints' QB's) Billy Kilmer was involved in 2 of the most memorable games in NFL history. First, as a member of the 49ers, he caught a pass on the 49er 34 yard line but was hit and fumbled and Jim Marshall picked it up and ran 66 yards the wrong way. Then as the QB of the Saints on 11/8/70, he got the Saints in position for Tom Dempsey to kick his then record setting 63 yard FG.
@gluserty
@gluserty 2 жыл бұрын
@Matt Joseph I agree, Kilmer was a battler who did well for himself, like a Joe Kapp-type of QB but with more staying power. Kilmer was so mentally strong, he not only shared time with the legendary Sonny Jurgensen, they became friends (I think that says a lot about both men). I feel that Kilmer was very likeable (great leader) and very good (more often than not Kilmer would find a way).
@shackdaddy7106
@shackdaddy7106 2 жыл бұрын
@@gluserty Kilmer was like Joe Kapp in terms of leadership. But Billy Kilmer was a far better player than Joe Kapp. With one exception. This could be a story for JAGMAN. The one game in 1969 where Joe Kapp tied a NFL record by throwing seven touchdown passes in one game for the Minnesota Vikings versus the defending NFL champion Baltimore Colts. The Colts were apparently still staggered by their Super Bowl III loss to the Jets. It was Don Shula’s last year as head coach of the Baltimore Colts. If I remember correctly he was actually traded to the Miami Dolphins for some draft picks. If I’m wrong I know somebody will correct me on that. That trade would be another worthy video for the JAGMAN.
@gluserty
@gluserty 2 жыл бұрын
@@shackdaddy7106 I believe you're right about the draft picks for Shula,which was compensation for losing him (from what I understand, Carroll Rosenblum was not at all happy that Shula went to the Dolphins without consulting him). Oh yeah, Kilmer was a much better player, but I think they had a similar attitude😤.
@shackdaddy7106
@shackdaddy7106 2 жыл бұрын
@@gluserty So the bottom line is that in effect Don Shula was traded for draft picks. Certainly helped the Dolphins in the long run. And his departure certainly did not hurt the Colts in 1970. The Colts win in Super Bowl V in the one of the most boring close games ever played. It came down to a last second field goal by Jim O’Brien which gave the Colts a 16-13 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The game was so bad that it is the only time in Super Bowl history that the Super Bowl MVP was given to a player on the losing team. Linebacker Chuck Howley of the Dallas Cowboys.
@gluserty
@gluserty 2 жыл бұрын
@@shackdaddy7106 Yeah, "The under Bowl"😁: thing is, both Cowboys Super Bowl wins were sloppy affairs, but Dallas played better in the second win (Roger Staubach was too efficient to let things get out of hand...Craig Morton certainly didn't enjoy his starts in the big game though!). Definitely, both the Dolphins & Colts did well with the Shula swap, and if Robert Irsay didn't become Colts owner, maybe they don't slip into irrelevance.

@gluserty
@gluserty 2 жыл бұрын
@@elijahpatterson2596 Brees had a better time with it all (I'm sure Archie would've been thrilled with that 10-6 2006 Saints season, when the NFC as a whole was weak and the Saints were only kind of good. Archie's Saints apex was 1978-'79, when the team went 15-17. Reminds me of the Jeff Blake-led 1995-'96 Bengals, exciting skill players but still too many holes), but I feel the comparison is justified. I feel Archie Manning deserved a lot better than being on the winning end of 35 NFL games, but Brees should have no less than 3 championships. But as QB's and as individuals, I consider both of them champions.

Landry has already been mentioned as rotating QBs, but that was more out of indecision between Staubach and Morton, rather than by design. The most successful QB platoon system were the late 40's/early 50's Rams, with Bob Waterfield and JG9 favorite, Norm Van Brocklin. Those teams were among the most explosive, ever. Even by today's standards. The 1950 Rams averaged nearly 40 points per game, still a record, I believe. Between them they won two championships and appeared in two others. Granted, it helped that both QBs ended up in the Hall of Fame.

"Kookie" was a hip, cool, wisecracking parking lot attendant, an early "Fonzie" type. He and his comb were so inseparable that Byrnes and Connie Stevens recorded a hit single, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb," which charted #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1959. I coached a baseball player who was an "effort" guy so I gave him a spot despite low talent. He bitched about backing up a 3 time All Star. Finally got his shot one day. Walked 4 times. Picked off 4 times. 4 defensive errors. Next game blew a gasket when he was not in the starting lineup. He told me should be on a MLB team, in particular the A's for some reason in 2003. After 2 years as a backup he got his first hit on the last game of the season and demanded guaranteed everyday starter hitting cleanup or he'd test the market. He's still testing the market 20 years later.

The Saints did rotate Ed Hargett and Billy Kilmer during the 1970 season. The O line was so bad they had to play two quarterbacks to keep at least one reasonably healthy. I’m gonna put in a word of support for ol’ Edd Hargett. In 1971, Hargett was platooning with Manning all year up to week 13 - the Cleveland game. That’s when Archie seems to have solidified his hold on the starting job. Hargett had led the Saints to an impressive victory against the 49ers (week 9) where he threw 3 TD passes. So, he was splitting time as the starter up to the last game of the season. If you look at the Saints box scores from 1971, you see that both QBs often played in the same game. The following year, 1972, with Manning playing every down, the Saints actually had a worse team by far. Hargett felt he should’ve gotten more playing time as he did in ‘71 when the Saints won more games.
