I have to come back here, I just had amazing info. My grandpa, who served in the French navy, when he was 28, was a radar operator and air support coordinator aboard the Tartu during this very incident. He told me that they had been deviated from their original course of patrol around Africa, left from Dakar towards Brazil with barely enough fuel to make the whole trip. They had to ration the fuel, so once arrived in Brazilian waters, they just completely shut down the Tartu’s engines. My grandpa recorded seeing several planes on his radar, flying patrols far from their position, looking for the Tartu but not finding anything. Eventually when the Brazilian bombers flew overhead, the anti air crews fired warning shots from the 127 mm and 47 mm guns without clear authorisation from their hierarchy. Hearing this, they were then ordered to cease fire immediately. At one point, the Brazilian bomber flew so close to the Tartu that the sailors on board could see that they had opened their bomb bays. Tension was pretty high at that point since the commander ordered the AA crews to lead the aerial targets constantly. Fortunately one of the spotters noted that the bomb bays of the Brazilian planes were empty, and so the alert for an attack was cancelled. However, the most terrible part of this little adventure was, according to my grandpa, the ship being stopped since they had so little fuel. The currents and waves were pretty strong, and the ship was rocking like crazy because it was no longer sailing, many of the sailors ended up sea sick and some of the living quarters just stank so bad from all the puking that the commander had to put back the engines on, for obvious sanitary reasons. By then they already had available reinforcements coming up, and the Tartu was able to return to Dakar. Also, about the feared French fleet near Africa, my grandpa said that “the Brazilian could never sink it because their navy was too poorly trained”. Turns out the Brazilians did manage to sink a French ship, because of their inability to maintain the “Foch” aircraft carrier they had bought from France. They had to sink it because it had become too old, full of toxic waste, and breaking down from everywhere. So the Brazilian navy did manage to sink a French ship after all !

Here in Norway, we have a Supreme Court case about snow crabs, and whether they're a sedentary species or not. Basically if they live in the ocean, or if they live on the ocean floor. It's regarded as one of the most important supreme court cases in modern Norwegian legal history, illustrated by the fact that the hearing was attended by all SC judges, instead of the usual five SC judges in an ordinary SC hearing.
@berg5714 Жыл бұрын
The reason for its importance is because it deals with the Svalbard Treaty, which gives Norway sovereignty over Svalbard with the condition that any other treaty party (country) can conduct activities there on equal terms as Norway. This case decided whether this condition of equal terms also applies to the resources in the continental shelf, including oil and minerals. If the snow crab is a sedentary species, the court would have to give an interpretation of the Svalbard Treaty. If snow crab isn't, then the court could leave the question of who has the rights to the continental shelf ambiguous

@@chheinrich8486 he wasnt much different to the UK really. France joined the EU and NATO but constantly bickered with their NATO allies and often went ahead and did their own thing and were pretty mistrustful of the US. The US and other NATO members during the Cold War focused more on integration of their forces and producing complementary equipment whereas France, especially under DeGaulle, focused more on their own military and producing most of their own gear and their nuclear policy was pretty divergent with the rest of NATO. They even essentially left NATO withdrawing from the command structure because they feel France is special and shouldnt be beholden to any of their allies; they want the protection that NATO provides but dont want to have to actually put in the work that NATO demands if they dont want to.

Great video! When I saw the teaser on Discord I thought that you were going to talk about the time the Brazilian navy attacked a group of dolphins thinking they were German submarines during WW1. Brazil was always great in diplomacy. During WW2 the US wanted to Brazil to join the Allies using Hollywood but instead Brazil used the opportunity to make Brazilian propaganda to the US. Carmem Miranda was international hit and Disney created Joe Carioca and made 2 movies with him showing Brazil (Saludos Amigos and The three Caballeros, both are great)
