"You are not in the stands, you are on the bleachers. Boot up," is a HELL of a quote! Like, I know it's meant as a callout, but it still gets me fired up. I'm aware of the fact that I'm not at the level of top talent, but to be even included in their demographic (as fellow players) inspires me to keep playing, because it puts into perspective that anyone can crawl their way into that upper circle with enough time. If I just keep playing and having fun, I will maybe be good enough one day to challenge the people who inspire me. SO PUT ME IN, COACH. AND THEN PUT ME IN AGAIN. I WAS BORN READY.

The first one, maybe, but part 2 veered too far away from several aspects of the novel that were important for the trajectory of the story and the characters for what you said to be true. I've read the books, and yes, they look great, but the story suffered in part 2 and makes me even more skeptical about Messiah.
@The_carrot_man

@@Sky-Strider I think it's good that part 2 seperated from the novel, cutting out a lot of things average movie viewers wouldn't understand or get confused by for better flow is a good decision. though messiah is gonna be a hit or miss imo, not a lot of "exciting" stuff happens in that book so i don't know how well it'll translate to screen

Why bring up Fellowship of the Ring as a counter example? It’s very similar. Frodo and Sam head off to Mordor. Paul and Jessica join the Fremen and head off into the desert. Both are setting up a grander story.
@GumshoeClassic
@GumshoeClassic 2 күн бұрын
It's the pacing. FOTR ends on them splitting up, but this is immediately preceded by multiple key events and action scenes. Boromir dies, the fellowship splits for good, Merry and Pippin get kidnapped. And you have the moment where Sam shows how far he's willing to go for Frodo, he almost drowns himself because of how comitted he is to the cause. A lot of people were simply bored during the final parts of Dune, so the ending was less "I want to know where it goes from here" and more "finally it's over". Imagine if Fellowship simply kept going for 30 more Minutes of Sam and Frodo climbing a mountain and ended on meeting Gollum.
@CptPilgrim
@CptPilgrim 2 күн бұрын
@ To me the climactic scene of Part One is the duel with Jamis. Without showing Paul and Jessica joining the Fremen the movie would be pointless and lacking any kind of conclusion. Of course it is setting up Part Two but it does stand on its own, Paul is going to achieve “desert power” which the movie circled around the whole time. If the movie ended after the Battle of Arrakeen it would have a lot of loose ends/unresolved plot lines: what role do the Fremen play, why learn how to survive and maneuver in the desert if it’s not used, what about these visions/prophecies, etc. If anything the movie could have been longer, but if staying truthful to the books there won’t be anything more climactic than the duel for quite a while and would require even more characters -> dune part two does start on quite a slow pace To everyone their own of course. I just want to point out that both views are rather subjective.

It really doesn't bother me since I understand that many people wouldn't be able to sit through for both part 1 & 2. I guess people like Brian are OK with leaving it on a cliffhanger rather than a "nothing" end to the first part.

To the point made at the end, my favorite example of people looking at successful people and thinking that their success deflects from their being a person is Brian Scalabrine, a guy who played in the NBA for 12 years, and in that 12 years he averaged about 3 points a game in 520 games played during his career, he averaged about 13 minutes on the court per game, he'd attempt one 3 pointer on average per game and would hit that 3 pointer 30% of the time, I don't know if he's the worst NBA player of all time, but his record is definitely absolutely miserable. This got many people shit talking him and saying that they'd mop the floor with him because he's so terrible, so he started this series called The Scallenge where he would play people in 1 on 1 and just effortlessly destroy them in such a way that it would look like they've never played basketball in their life before. Brian Scalabrine might have been a terrible NBA player, but being a terrible NBA player puts him leagues above the average idiot who never got close.

I'm a big proponent of movies with big budgets/plots being normally 3 hours long. I'd rather have more content in the thing I'm interested in than me left wanting more. On that note I was fine with the Dune 1 ending because they had already said it was going to have multiple parts. If the other parts weren't confirmed and it just died there, it already did it's job in getting me invested in the Dune world so I'd just go read the books afterwards. If the other 2 LotR movies didn't get made people would still definitely have been mad even if Fellowship ended on a more solid note than Dune 1.

I loved Dune. It’s an excellent movie that is remarkably faithful to its source material, both literally adhering to the story and spiritually with how the world is portrayed. I love the book and the movie both, and I completely agree that the place they chose to end the first movie was wack. I wonder if it would have been better suited to 3 shorter movies instead, especially since the novel is split into 3 sections.

my problem with the dune films is that they were probably better if you had already read the book and had a frame of reference for what you were watching. in a vacuum, the movies were compelling, but the plot itself, at least in part one, left something to be desired because of how sparse it felt in terms of its themes and ideology when compared to the book. after the first movie, i felt as though i had watched a very well-made moodboard of dune rather than a film that i could enjoy in its own right. dune as a series is about the genealogy of its ideas rather than the actual moment-to-moment plot, but that concept doesn’t translate well into a film, especially for the uninitiated. i enjoyed the second part more because of its evocative storytelling and its increase in spectacle, but i still think that the films as a whole somewhat misrepresent the story and themes of dune in order to make the source material more palatable for the general audience. regardless, i think both films have cemented themselves in the canon of modern cinema, and they stand out in terms of craftsmanship and spectacle in a sea of largely uninspired contemporaries.

Dune would have definitely benefitted from being a television series, as far as pacing goes. The movies are beautifully filmed and all that, but they fumbled the story in part 2 (coming from someone who has read the books). Messiah (the second book) is even better than the first book, and part 2 really stunted the parts of Dune's story that are crucial moving into Messiah for no good reason. That ruins it for me, personally. Not sure what the writers will have to cobble together to get Messiah done right.

I'm curious what you didn't like in part 2? I think the Chani turn to give her more agency in the movie was cool BUT it now hinges on how the writing brings them back together in messiah as I do not know how you'd do that story without them in love. If messiah's movie suffers as a result of part 2's story beats, it would be a tragedy as that is the best book of the series that I've read so far
@Sky-Strider
@Sky-Strider Күн бұрын
@@TheJavy1999 That's a large part of what I didn't like about it, actually. You hit the nail on the head. I don't think that the only way to give Chani more agency was to botch her and Paul's relationship like that. I'm also not a fan of how the movie handled the presence of doubts among the Fremen about Paul. I know that the Fremen might not be uniform in their beliefs across an entire planet, but I also think that it was necessary for the writers to make a whole character to sit next to Chani and symbolize it. Doubts could've been handled when Paul gives his speech (that part was cool), and it also could've been handled during the timeskip that the novel graciously left open for the movie adaptation to use. The mishandling/removal of the timeskip is another mark against part 2 imo. They decided to truncate the span of the plot when they could've used the timeskip. Now it feels weird for Paul to so quickly unite the entire planet, and he and Chani's relationship is nowhere near as deep.

Its funny because i agree with his take about movies needing a conclusion, especially if they dont advertise it being a franchise ahead of time, i just dont agree that Dune was part of the problem. Spiderman across the spider verse having no ending and the latest fast and furious movie was way worse than dunes ending in my eyes. I think i knew dune was a multi book series so i never expected it to be a stand alone movie and maybe thats the difference. The animated spiderman is an original story so there was no way i could expect a cliffhanger and i think movies meed to stop doing that.

I didn''t feel as pissed as Brian after I had watched the first movie, but was definitely a bit underwhelmed and felt it had quite some lengths that didn't need to be there. After watching part 2, which I thought was way more dynamic and had a much better flow to it, I read up on the production and only then found out that Dune 1 is the way it is (if I remember correctly) because they were planning to shoot both part 1 & 2 in one go, but somehow they unexpectedly only got the budget for part 1 and that's why they had to compromise on the whole flow of the first movie, given they didn't know for sure if there even would be a second one.

My impression was always that this was a passion project of the director's, and the studios went along with making two parts because they had some trust in Villeneuve, as opposed to something like the Hobbit movies which (to my understanding) were the studios trying to squeeze more money out of the franchise with more movies. That could all be marketing hype though :p

Oh Brian. Yes, Dune part1 is just part of the story (wasn’t it titled like that? Maybe I just followed the production too closely), but it ended in a logical place. You are focused on the plot instead of the story. The story is about Paul’s decent into becoming Kwisatz Haderach, and him taking a life, having visions shown throughout the first film fulfilled, and joining fremen is a big breaking point in the journey. Setting wise it also makes sense, splitting Paul’s identity as a Duke’s son and his life with fremen into seperate pictures. From all the unnecessary multi-part films, I don’t think Dune is one of them. Both films are already long, and they make so many cuts and shortcuts. If anything my complain would be stuff the movies left unexplained and lack of worldbuilding, but it’s a creative choice, rather than a straight up weakness. I am more let down by Dune part2, which I hope will dive deeper into those things, now when a lot of plot was dealt with in the first film, but it chose to wramp up spectacle. Quite a feast for the senses in an IMAX, but it’s not a film I feel I need to see the 2nd time. Your complain isn’t uncommon one, and appears with every multipart film - it was the same with Empire Strikes back, it was the same with Lord of the Rings. It will disappear as the film trilogy gets completed, and the viewer can continue the story at his or her own leisure. I do agree though film studios are too eager to create multipart films, and stopped creating lengthy multi hour epics with intermission, like Lawrence of Arabia or 7 Samurai or Space Oddysey. Reasons for it are obvious - longer film, less screening per day = less money for studios and theatres.

Eh, most movies aren't explicitly titled "part 1". The movie made it clear from the word go that the end of the movie is not the end of the story, it's part 1. When the movie starts, the title isn't Dune, it's Dune part 1. When Star Wars came out in theaters, it wasn't Star Wars part 1. Hell, not even Lord of the Rings came out and released as Lord of the Rings part 1, it was Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Dune gets a pass because it never pretends to be something it's not. If you don't like it, you don't like it, but I think framing it as being a trick is disingenuous

I agree generally, make the movie finish the movie, but I think specifically you can find out about the chopped movie thing before you go pretty easily. You gotta actively avoid knowing it almost😂 Like I’m not on socials and barely watch previews and I know these things lol, if it’s based on a book post-Hobbit.. And I’m hard out on subtitles; if you need em go at it, but they objectively detract. I’m in my 30s too, but: oooollllllldd🤣

I'll die on this hill: The movie is fine as a Hollywood movie, but also a terrible adaptation of the novel. If someone hasn't read it, they'll probably really like it. If they have, they will probably hate it. Both can be true.

You are almost certainly right that Dune would adapt better as a mini-series, but this is the one time I have to disagree with you. Movie is titled Dune: Part One. I know you don't care about the novelization, but anyone saying it ended where it did due to studio meddling is wrong. Part one of the novel ends exactly where part one of the movie ends. It is a remarkably faithful adaptaion overall. It also has a part 2. To imply that Dune doesn't have a message and has no value on its own is a bit wild.... and again... it is titled Part One.

absolute W take. If I didn't see dune 1 almost immediately before watching dune 2, I would've been just as mad. Dune 1 is absolutely way better if it's instantly preceded by dune 2. I would've hated waiting years for the sequel

So the first book had two parts to it. Part 1 ends right after Paul and Jessica escape into the desert, the natural breaking point as Brian called out. I haven't seen the movies, I don't plan to, can only assume they have too much emphasis on combat. Let me know when we get to God Emperor and then i might be interested.

It was not only a attempt to gather engagement for a possible series of movies but doing Dune right in just one go would end up being awful. It had to be a series of movies. For something like Wicked it's stupid but Dune and even The Hobbit needed that time. Same kinda deal happened with Kill Bill too even though that wasn't based on anything in particular.

Can't agree with Brian more tbh. I found the whole movie to also be kinda dull but the ending thing definitely got me.

Why can't they just make a series? We've seen how books can implemented very well like GoT (not counting when they went off-script). It's just better to wait 6 years until the whole trilogy is out before watching the first movie with this shit

5:01 Nah, if you're trying to do Wicked justice, meaning trying to make it as good and entertaining as the musical while still being its own thing, it needs to be 4+ hours long, which requires 2 movies, full stop. That means giving more time to include things from the book or flesh more things out. Plus, the big emotional moment before the end of part one needs time to breathe. That's where the intermission is in the musical, so it's a great place to take a break. Defying Gravity is emotionally weighty and exhausting, so ending on that crescendo is perfect for a part one.

Dune 1 ending was not good. It just ended and just because its a part 1 doesnt mean there shouldnt be a conclusion to that journey that leads into another. Also from a financial perspective, if the first one flopped they weren't going to do a 2. Nothing is guaranteed in that town. So make the movie like its going to be the only one. Overall it was entertaining and looked incredible but ending fell hella flat. Not a hot take at all. Whether you read the books or its a part 1, gotta have some conclusion.

What? Lord of The Rings don't stand on it's own. You can't just watch just one. and be content. With Star Wars it's a bit different because it is way more action driven movie. Like you can watch any fast and furious movie on it's own. But with stories as deep as Dune or LotR's, you can't condense it to one movie, but, you will surely have to watch all of it. I think your complain is really a non complain and you might just not like Dune.
