I have a spade tune from you all and I gotta say the truck feels like a two stroke dirt bike. If easy on the throttle the truck takes off nice and smooth but smash on the go pedal and it feels like a power band kicking in and that thing takes off. Next to do on my list is buy a built tranny from you all to go in it. I like the quality, precision and pride you put into your products.

Posted this question to Duramax Forum, but will ask here too. Loud, metallic bang under the hood and although engine idles and operates nominally, no turbo boost on gauge. EGT's climb quickly under heavy accel, but truck runs ok at small throttle. What's up?

Would you guys recommend or not recommend installing an aftermarket compressor wheel such as the batmowheel or the wicked wheel on this turbo? Not looking for a huge gain in power would just like some more whistle to the turbo without going and buying an entire aftermarket turbo.

Hey Nick! Love watching Duramax tuner vids their always filled with good info. Do you know how many miles these usually last before needing a rebuild in stock form on a well maintained truck? I’m at 218k miles and don’t tow anything.

John V. Thanks for reaching out. You may want to check the turbo itself to determine the need for a rebuild or replacement. To do that - get access to the compressor wheel by removing the air inlet. Push in and out on the compressor wheel itself to see if there's any play. Take a flashlight and check the wheel blades for oil or other debris. Push the wheel up and down and you will find out if there's any contact with the compressor wheel. If any of these issues will indicate the need to rebuild the turbo. Now you need to decide if you're going to rebuild the charger or replace it. If you decide to rebuild, you will want to get the compressor wheel balanced. This is an extra cost and combined with the removal of the charger and rebuild kit may put within range of a replacement stock charger or upgrade. Sounds like you take really good care of your truck. If the compressor wheel feels solid, then no worries - put the air inlet back on and keep on trucking! If you have any questions - give us a call 815-568-7920.

If I swap in a 64mm compressor that utilizes the stock exhaust housing , do I need to purchase an adjustable wastegate ?

Does the turbo have anything to do with loss of power and smell of raw diesel and blue smoke at idle clears when accelerated

It sounds more like a fuel system issue.

I have a turbo overboost code (p0234) on my 2003 lb7. Could it just be a bad boost sensor or bad wastegate?

It could be, more likely cause would be a boost leak.

Never having driven another LB7, or any other diesel pu, I have no frame of reference in regard to turbo-lag. My stock truck jumps off the line and boost rises to 22# but not until a count of 2-3 seconds. Normal? I need to find another turbo diesel to drive.

yes, diesel engines depend on the turbo for the jump in power, while petrols are small scale engines that can go on their own much faster without a turbo. Plus boost lag is fun to play with anyways.
