I have religously changed the air filter at 12,000 miles and the oil at 5000. 2006 Durmax at 560K miles. Bone stock. No "performance" upgrades. Truck regularly tows 10K pounds. Original turbo, tansmission, water pump and oil pump.

Jiffy lube opened my air filter to check it. 5000 miles later I made the mistake of returning again. The technician came to say who ever installed your air filter installed it upside down. Don't use Jiffy lube if your vehicle means anything to you.

Ryans a great guy, and hes totally right. I gernaded a turbo, cause was a hole in my intercooler, a boost leak. He got me fixed up and sure enough i did a boost leak check and do anytime i pull a charge pipe. I made one with a pvc pipe end cap and air line fitting. Regulator in line with it. Cost me $5. Saved me thousands.

There are 2 basic causes of turbo failure are both lack of oil issues. Don't jump on it when you first fire it up, wait until you've got oil pressure established. Don't come nailing the throttle up to a stop and shut the engine off. If the engine is off then you have no oil to the turbo shaft bearing (bushing).

Last June (2021), I went to the Lower Keys from Northern Illinois pulling a 7,500 lb trailer full of construction tools. Just North of Cairo, Illinois, we lost an intercooler. Powerstoke specialist in the area said he "never saw that happen before". After replacing it (on a Sunday morning at 7 am), our diesel ran great and has several thousand miles since we returned in July.

most common reason a turbo fails is because you keep upgrading stuff. I've had mine 230k miles with zero issues other than water pump on truck... LLY and bulletproof, bought it 3 yrs old, 2nd owner has mods and tunes but basic stuff stuff replaced... you don't need all this and that for a street truck that tows and is ready for work on the daily

Idling the engine before Shutting it off gives the turbo a chance to cool. Oil flow is what lubricants and dissipates heat in the turbo bearings. If you stop oil flow when it's to hot oil will burn and carbon up the bearings. My 07lbz takes about 90 seconds to cool down to 300 degrees. If your pulling a load and it would take a little longer. I have a an 01 cummins it takes about 45 seconds to reach 300 degrees. A gauge is your best friend then you know.

Ryan: Great Video! Lots of information. I don't own a Turbo'd vehicle currently, but I do want a Turbo-diesel vehicle on our next purchase. Two Questions: I've considered having a separate oiling system 4 the Turbo with 2 Frantz Oil systems---4 both engine oil & Turbo oil. Kits available 4 common diesels. They filter down to 2 microns, & it removes carbon from the oil (see Frantz's video on this). It's expensive---do U think it's worth it? What about a Vacuum Pump on venting the crankcase to remove the blowby that will occur?

Great video, I learned some good tips, you didn't mention about cool down for the turbo after heavy loads/high EGT. Shutdown a truck soon as you stop pulling a loaded trailer will bring early failure. I like to idle a few minutes even empty to cool down turbo.
@ToadHoleOntario
@ToadHoleOntario 2 жыл бұрын
Your turbo would have to glowing red to cause the engine oil to burn up. If your turbo is getting that hot that you need to cool it down then think about metal and how is expands and contracts when it cools and remember you manifold will probably crack and leak first.
@GrandPrix46

I like to drive easy the last few miles before I get to where I'm going to let it cool down. Usually let it idle for ~30 seconds before I shut it down as I'm getting stuff ready before I get out of the truck. This has worked well for every turbo vehicle I've had.
@ToadHoleOntario
@ToadHoleOntario 2 жыл бұрын
@@GrandPrix46 if you bastardized your truck and need to watch the turbo temps just remember real Diesel engines have cylinder liners not parent bores. If your turbo is hot then your piston is hot and polished the top cross hairs in the cylinder till she has a little to much blow by. Real working trucks have air brakes to stop bigger loads. Transport trucks use gear on gear transmissions and no chains in the 4x4( yes you can get a class 8 4x4 Western star truck) it’s just epic stupid truck guys. If you put a turbo on that Godzilla Ford engine it would smoke all Diesel engine power trucks.

@@charlesarmstrong3536 , I am a transport truck mechanic and am a certified Cummins and certified Detroit G2 training. Diesel engines were practical with a mechanical diesel pump and a na diesel is the most reliable thing on the earth. As soon as you increase the cylinder pressure your loosing the only thing a diesel has. Long term reliability. All it takes is the cylinder walls to loose the honing marks and now you have used up most of the engines “prime running conditions” build a turbo gasser and you’ll have some crazy obnoxious monster truck build that could possible lift the wheels off the ground
