The people where positive because it was in the city centre of The Hague, an area with high income residents who all vote progressive. Try it in the ''Schilderswijk'' or in ''Duindorp'' or in on of the surrounding villages and you might get different responses.

Next year, I will move to the Netherlands to continue my study. At first I was pretty anxious to move there since I had absolutely zero clue about life in the Netherlands: the culture, the social life, the tolerance, the economics, the health care etc. But after watching this video, it makes me quite relieved since almost all of the comments are very positive. Oh wat fijn om een keer te horen (via de Sociale Media) dat er positieve reacties zijn over ons land. Kritisch zijn mag zeker en niet alles is goed in Nederland. Maar belangrijk is wel om te relativeren en dat doen ook nog gelukkig genoeg mensen. I'm glad to hear these positive comments about our country. To be honest, not everything is perfect in the Netherlands. Some things need to change. But keep putting things into perspective, that's really important.

I hate to be *that* guy, but the answers to this question of course rely heavily on where you're going to make this video and who you're going to interview. If I'm not mistaken, this is the center of The Hague, our political capital. You'd probably get different answers if you would go to for example Schilderswijk, neighborhood of The Hague with much more poverty and crime, or interview people from more diverse backgrounds. The people interviewed here seem to marginalize problems like discrimination, social injustice and wealth inequality which makes sense if you don't suffer from it ("well, you have those problems anywhere and it's not so bad here as in other places"), but if that's your daily reality, you would probably give a different answer.

This is in the city centre, which is not just rich people, everyone goes to the city centre. Also I don't know if you'd get that different response in poor neighborhoods, I mean yeah, they of course don't have everything they might want, but even they tend to realise that life is still really good here. In Germany or Belgium it's quite similar, and in lots of places further away it's way worse. In very few countries the lower class has a higher standard of living than in the Netherlands, and I'm by no means rich myself (I don't come close to modal income). Maybe you'd find a higher standard of living in Norway or Sweden or something, but that's about it. There's problems obviously, but if you look holistically at the question, we don't really have anything to complain about. Life is better than it has ever been and better than in almost every place in the world. I'm glad I'm born in the Netherlands and not in Russia for example.

Ik ben 66 en heb ongeveer de helft van mijn leven in Nederland gewoond. 12 jaar in Spanje en nu alweer 20 jaar in Duitsland, zoals ook 3 jaar in de jaren 70. Nederland is uitstekend georganiseerd. Wiegel zei ooit dat het land gewoon door kan funtioneren als de 2e kamer en de regering er niet zouden zijn. Dat komt door de doorgeorganiseerde ambtelijke structuur van het land. De gezondheidszorg is op een hoog niveau, al vind ik de marktwerking in die zorg volstrekt onbegrijpelijk. Dat heeft de prijzen onnodig naar bovem gestuwd. Transport is prima, innovatie op allerlei gebieden ook uitstekend. Landbouw, chemie, muziek, sport, de wegen....te veel om op te noemen. Slecht vind ik het altijd opgeheven Nederlandse leraren vingertje en de prijzen in restaurants zijn vaak veel te hoog. Als er 3 euro wordt gevraagd voor een glas water, of 4 euro voor een bakje patat, dan is er iets fors mis met die Horeca prijzen. In Duitsland eet ik voor de de helft en nog goedkoper. Maar respect, waar respect thuishoort. Nederland is een topland.

The Netherlands has become overpopulated and its still getting worse. It used to be perfect. Thats the reason im worried for the future. Will the Netherlands still be liveable? We have a major housing shortage as it is. Where do our children have to live? I just hope the governement keeps it in check. Its all about balance. Everything is all about growth these days but nothing can grow forever, especially a tiny country as the Netherlands.

Would love to a see video of what they think of certain areas becoming more diversified in cultures and what their experience has been if any. I know foreigners especially Americans are more open minded than the typical Dutch person. My girl visited me in California and was shocked when so many people greet " Good Morning " she even got several compliments on her dress at the mall by strangers whereas that's never happened to her in her own country before.

It depends where you live in The Netherlands. In the south or east part of the Netherlands it's more comment to greet people with "Good Morning" or give them a smiley. I think in the States it's the same. It depends where you live. This is actually quite similar.

Americans are proactively friendly and outgoing for the most part. Every nationality and race lives there. I can understand the rise in nationalist parties in Europe though because the countries are smaller, there aren't enough opportunities for everyone, crime rises naturally with more people, and some immigrants simply choose not to integrate which causes tension. It is an unfortunate situation for all, but we have to question why many countries in the middle east, Asia, and Africa don't take in as many refugees as North American and European countries.

I love Den Haag, I think it is cooler than Amsterdam even. I think it's fascinating that while Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, The Hague is where the actual government is. Like the Hofvijver (and Mauritshuis too, of course) in the background of the shots of this video, then the Parliament is like RIGHT there. I'm pretty sure I saw a brief glimpse of the Binnenhof early in this video but not close enough to see the Ridderzaal proper. Dank je wel!

Nederland wordt duurder, maar uurloon blijft nog hetzelfde,tja dat gebeurt overal. Ik vind het heel goed dat jij krijgt hetzelfde rechts, rechts om te kiezen wat je denkt is goed. Het eten (nederlands eten is niet zo bijzonder) Patat en frikandel of Chinese eten kan ophalen dat zou lekker kunnen. "We have enough social safety." Me, living in a poorer environment than The Hague, having seen 3 or 4 residents struggle and become manic-psychotic because the GGZ didn't have time or money to help them; 'Sure..."

"We have enough social safety." does not mean that everyone is catered for from the cradle to the grave. In any society there will be people who will struggle with all kinds of issues. Some people manage to overcome them by themselves, others don't even overcome them with the help of 1000 professionals taking care of every tiny thing, paving the roads and opening every door for them. "We have enough social security." means that people do not become homeless because they lose their job or get sick. It means that people still can buy food, despite the fact that they are not working. If you compare the Dutch welfare system with other countries you'll understand that we indeed have enough social safety.

There are plenty of people that become homeless because they told the UWV that they were working, but the paper got lost, arrived 3 weeks late and the paycheck was already paid and they needed to hire lawyers to avoid becoming homeless. Arjen Lubach has a bit about Social Advocates, that deal with those issues. The government is actively trying to discourage people to go to lawyers and is shortening their time to work on things because `if the advocate doesn´t get much time to help the person, the defense won´t be much either` and that´s how they win their cases. @@williamgeardener2509 Also, I might want to add that I spoke about people on the waitinglist, that didn't get any help, not people that simply struggled on their own and got 1000 professionals for every tiny thing, paving the roads. We're talking people that started off with small troubles and then they snowballed into depression, psychosis, suicide and selfharm. 3 of them are still in severe care now, which I think wouldn't have been necessary, had they been helped sooner. The neighbourhood warned the GGZ each time that they were carried off to the ambulance, with the blood gushing on the street. Don't suggest these are people that want every door opened for them and are whining about small things in life. You are being derogative.

Sadly the Dutch society has turned into a society of whining people who expect help and support as soon as they have some minor problem. It's also never their fault that they couldn't fix the small problems they created themselves. I've hit rock bottom when I was young and got up again without any help. But than, I also didn't get PTSD from staying at home because of Covid.

So weird hearing that dutch people are more oriented toward themselves and not opened towards other people. I have a lot of dutch tourists where I'm working and they are always fun to talking to. Of course not with everyone of them, but the majority.

This is just my personal impression, but I noticed that people are like you described when they're involved in futile and quick human interactions, but they tend to neglect the deeper human connections or just have a few because they spend a lot of their life time in things like studies, career and related things. You said it yourself: tourists. It's not shocking that people tend to be more open when they're tourists visiting some place for some time. They have to in order to find connections etc. Try dealing with them in the Netherlands and you'll see whether they're actually friendly and open.

Regrettably, over the past 20 years and continuing, the social welfare system is being dismantled bit by tiny bit. Even though the Netherlands still has a decent support system for the lowest income households compared to neighboring countries, it is no longer enough for a humane livelihood in this country. Much of this is because neither special compensations(tegemoetkoming) nor structural allowances(toeslag) grow proportionately to the expenses, nor does the actual monthly welfare(uitkering). It''s linked to the minimum wage, which is very low in the Netherlands. Below €10 per hour. The gap between rich and poor is growing, the gap between poor and the traditional middle class is fading. I love the Netherlands, but the government hasn't been there for the people in a long time.

Absolutely. The country itself is great, the people are great and the government-systems absolutely suck and need to change. I have Autism and I have waited about 12 months to recieve some help for it at the GGZ, then the person that was supposed to help me, got pregnant and I waited a bit longer. I wasn't suicidal, that also meant I had to wait longer to recieve help. Suidicals wait 8-9 months, others about a year. Currently my city is (appareantely) shitpoor and has 'fused' with Amsterdam. Therefore, the rules of Amsterdam are now our rules too. The garbage-expenses have tripled, the moneycost for events has gone from paying 4000 to paying 22.000 (that means we no longer will have any local celebrations) and the company that currently supports me with my Autism, "does not work for Amsterdam" so in all likelyhood, I will not have any support after July 2022. We are currently asking if Amsterdam is willing to accept the twice-a-month Autism-Art-company that I visit and my mental-health-hotline, and they're still thinking about it. But they are very much in controll and get to decide if I can go or not. Any extra financial help that people would recieve here (mantelzorgtoeslag) is gone now, because Amsterdam doesn't do that shit and the little yearly gift has been removed as well. Not that I care, I never recieved it, but the thought of removing such a small token for the exhausted people taking up extra time to help the sick neighbour out of their clothes and into their bed, is just a very petty move. In return, we get to rent 15 books from the library for free and you can go swimming for free if you're on the bottom of the paychecks.

@@Widdekuu91 I understand, here in the east of the country(Twente), it is not much different. With municipalities being made responsible for essentially everything without being properly compensated by the national government, funding for every little thing is weighed extra carefully and often declined, I'm talking about "bijzondere bijstand," "WMO" and others. Even if it was just because the municipal government does not yet know if the specific expense is something they can afford with the available funds before it running out at the end of the year. A clear example is the one time 800 euro energy allowance for low income households. Coincidentally, today the government announced that they will increase the funding for that initiative. But local governments are still not distributing it, because the national government simply is not allocating enough money. Even with today's little boost, it is not enough for local governments to pay everyone that has the legal right to it, especially since most cities are on the brink of bankruptcy already. And even if they distributed it fairly, only people with a net income of 1250 euro per month or less would get it. If you receive social security income from the government directly(UWV), for instance for having a handicap like autism, your income might be 1260 euros per month and you would not have any right to that 800 supplemental income. It's a disgrace. The minimum wage, and every type of income linked to it, needs to increase by about 100% for the lowest income households, whether they work, can work, or not, to live with any form of dignity in this country. The disturbing thing is that the government can continue doing this without electoral consequences, because they keep the group that suffers small enough to not have enough votes to change anything, and they keep the "middle class" afraid of losing privileges and drop down into poverty enough for many of them to vote for parties that are not in their interest, like VVD, CDA and D66. It's depressing.

@@janman Thanks for your words, I agree it's a disgrace. I also hate the fear you keep feeling whenever it's about the UWV or other government-companies, whenever you do something that you fear _could_ be having an impact on your benefits or your right to it. I am not poor, and I won't suggest that I have the same fear as people that are in severe debts and are victims of the Kindertoeslag-affaire, because I am not even close. But a few years ago, someone asked me if I could help out (voluntarily) in their shop, to decorate the shoppingwindow, just 3 times on a big day (because I studied to become a Shoppingwindow-decorator) and I said yes. I immediately had to get forms, call the UWV, explain what was going on and declare that I would notbe working illegally, only helping out 3 times. Problem is that the shop nééded to legally pay me 4 euro's per month. The fact that I would use it to buy materials with, in mainly their store (and therefore not benefit one single penny, although I was allowed to keep some of the decorations afterwards) didn't matter, it was still payment. We spend evenings checking all the rules on their website and clarifying what kind of things I would be doing, those upcoming 3 days in that year. I mean, I enjoyed crafting and helping the store out, but in hindsight, it might not have been worth the stress. And explaining all of that to every idiot on the street or in earshot that coïncidentally hears about my benefits and calls me a lazy goodfornothing that needs to get a job, is really difficult. That reminds me, I had a conversation with a doctor from the UWV, a few years ago. I won't repeat the whole 2 hours, but let's just say, she was só intrusive about my life that the colour of my urine was one of her normal questions. (She wanted to make sure that I wouldn't go on to claim an illness that I didn't have and kept reminding me about her right to physically examine me, which felt *very* uncomfortable.) Either way, she asked me something about jobs, payments or lottery-winnings. I didn't have any. She asked me if people in the street sometimes "gave me stuff and helped me out." I happily answered; 'Yes!" My mom panicked and said; 'No..no, they don't! Widdekuu, you don't understand the question!" The woman said; 'Silence!' to my mom and asked me; 'How much do they give you?' I replied; 'Well, my downstairs-neighbour gave me 2 jars of glitter, a few weeks ago. And Jan gave me 2 packs of stroopwafels, to say 'thankyou' for the pictures of his now-deceased cat. Another has helped me download a song and remix it for me. And I sometimes trade things with the neighbour on the first floor, like fabrics or coloured paper, for crafts." She sank back (visibly dissapointed) and said; 'That's not what I meant ofcourse!!!" I genuienly didn't understand and my mom whispered; 'She meant money." I said; 'Why would they give me money?' and the lady continued her questionlist. My mom and I later spoke about what happened and I said; 'I genuienly thought that she felt bad for me, when she heard I didn't have any lotterywinnings or extra income...and that therefore she wanted to make sure that the neighbourhood was at least nice to me?' And my mom said; 'That's lovely sweetie, but that's a bit naive. She doesn't care in the slightest about your life, honey, she was trying to find out if you were a fraud.' And I said; 'Oh, well..I thought, maybe she realized how harsh she was sounding and tried to be friendlier.' My mom said; 'No, sweetie, that's not the case.' I don't know, sorry if I've overshared, I tend to do that. But obviously, this is still not 'the worst' or anything, it could be much worse, for others in this country it is. I mean, I know people with wheelchairs that have to crawl up the stairs to show they 'really need a wheelchair' and that sortof heartless things. I know a girl that has PTSD and she had to recall the whole trauma and explain her nightmares to the UWV, who didn't have a shred of sympathy ofcourse. It's awful.

Your story, as well as the kindertoeslag-affaire you mentioned, are examples of how bureaucracy and governance with a certain agenda(neoliberal), as well as the perceived lack of an opposite(social) alternative, can turn any country in the American Dream....I mean, Hellscape! Heel interessant deze video. Maar hij komt overeen met wat ik zelf heb ervaren. Ik vind het leven in Nederland in het algemeen goed, maar er zijn ook problemen. Ik heb de indruk dat de Nederlanders vaak deze problemen gewoon “negeren” en ze worden boos of voelen zich beledigd als iemand naar die aanwijst. Het is een soort “geloof”. Daarom denk ik dat Nederlanders impliciet wel nationalistisch zijn. Ik kan twee voorbeelden geven: studeren is (in theorie) gratis in Duitsland, Frankrijk en Denemarken en de gezondheidszorg is gratis in Engeland. Dezelfde dingen zijn super duur in Nederland. Maar de snelwegen en infrastructuur zijn inderdaad goed in Nederland. En ik vind Nederlanders ook tolerant. Daar ben ik mee eens.

Nederlanders zijn niet tolerant maar onverschillig. Ok, altijd nog beter dan de discriminerende houding tov zaken van de bulk van immigranten. Studeren is duur ? Hmm 🤔. Collegegeld is maar 10% van wat een studie kost. Misschien de boeken etc. ?

Vroeger vond ik dat altijd een stom statement, maar inmiddels is het wel zo, als je niet meerekend dat er vooral door de hoge heren wordt besloten welke woningen te koop aangeboden worden en welke een Air-bnb worden (wordt sowieso altijd een Air-BNB.)

@@Widdekuu91 begrijpelijk dat je het eerst stom vond. Het eerste waar de meeste mensen aan denken is natuurlijk dat het egoïstisch is. Echter is dat het juist niet. Te veel mensen op een klein stuk land zorgt ervoor dat de levenskwaliteit van dat kleine stukje land naar beneden gaat. Uiteraard wil je andere mensen nog helpen, maar je kan ze alleen niet meer naar dat kleine stukje land halen.

nice video, but allow me to give a counter opinion. I'm a Dutchy, lived in The Netherlands (mostly Haagse Region, where this video is made) for 35 years, but decided that it wasnt the country for me or my kids to grow up in. We moved to Canada 6 years ago and do see the differences. Going here, we thought The Netherlands/Holland, was too crowded/ cramped, both physically and mentally space (for us) was being restricted. Everything is 'over' regulated. I understand there have to be rules (i worked for MinJus and for Defensie, so understand the concept of rules and having to follow those), but to us there was too much regulation. 'Keurslijf' / 'Kop niet boven maailveld steken' are a good statements about being Dutch. And the physical space... well there is plenty of that here in Canuck land. My house and car are much bigger than anything I could ve/did own in The Netherlands. Streets are wider, no bicycles, parking is much easier, shops are more accessible (more malls); general pay is higher, minimum wage is around C$15 and that feeling of having a little more self regulation (although with the current political way, that has shrunk quit a bit, compared to what it was say 15 years ago, when we made the decision to move to Canada). Good things about Dutchyland: (in comparison to this side of the pond): definitely health care and education. We are surely lacking behind here!! and prices for groceries are much cheaper in The Netherlands and basic living expenses in general are higher here (see higher minimum wage). We still have the Dutch mentality and are able to save a decent amount of money each year, if we didnt then we would not have excelled as we did so far. We're finally able to visit our family and friends this year in Holland, so we'll see what has happened in the past few years, since we left. All in all, we made the right decision for us to leave, and others hopefully make the right decision for them to go/stay in the Netherlands.

Bedankt voor jouw opmerking. Dit is echter geen reportage, maar een filmpje dat toont wat bepaalde mensen die wij toevallig op straat tegenkwamen over het leven in Nederland denken. Dit wil niet zeggen dat iedereen in Nederland hetzelfde denkt of dat er niets meer te zeggen valt. Daarnaast maken wij deze filmpjes om leer- en oefenmateriaal in het Nederlands kosteloos ter beschikking te stellen. Ook begrijp ik niet waarom dit een "selectie van geïnterviewden" zou moeten zijn. Wij spreken gewoon de mensen aan die op straat zijn en hebben geen invloed daarop wat zij antwoorden. :) - Mario

@@EasyDutch Er is al enkele jaren en vooral in 2021 een run aan de gang van Nederlanders die niet meer in Nederland willen wonen. Iedere dag vertrekken er tussen de 400 en 500 Nederlanders uit het land. (CBS) Verder: de Nederlandse bevolking groeide in 2021 met 115 979 personen. Door de internationale migratie groeide de bevolking met 108 275 personen. Jonge Nederlanders wonen gedwongen bij hun ouders in, met of zonder een partner. De woningen in Nederland gaan beleidsmatig op macro niveau eerst naar de asielzoeker. Het aantal wachtenden op een woning, de asielzoeker dus, is 38.000. De jonge goed tot zeer goed opgeleide Nederlander heeft het nakijken en gaat dus weg. Vorig voorjaar heeft het UWV een opdracht gegeven aan het NIDI, om te onderzoeken waarom er opeens zoveel senioren Nederland definitief verlaten. Er is mij toegezegd dat ik een kopie van dat rapport zou krijgen. Het onderzoeksrapport is door het NIDI opgemaakt maar het wordt publiekelijk niet gepubliceerd.

@@manygor2687 You discount all Nederlanders that are mensen van kleur. Where have you been the last 500 years? 'Kleur' includes all variations from Africa through Asia and the America's. Are you not aware that we are and have been a seafaring people, that have been travelling all over the world and also that in Europe people have been migrating since all times. And consequently that the term Nederlanders comprises all of those people. Just open those eyes when being outside and you will recognise what I say.
