The Dutch That Fought Against the Western Allies in World War II - Landstorm Nederland

Landstorm Nederland was a collaborating Dutch Waffen-SS unit established in March 1943 during WWII in the Netherlands. Contrary to the Wiking Division and the Dutch Volunteer Legion, this unit did not fight on the Eastern Front. They did see action during the Liberation of Belgium and Operation Market Garden. Later it was re-named into SS-Grenadier-Brigade Landstorm Nederland (1944) and after that re-named: 34. SS-Grenadier-Division Landstorm Nederland (1945). Some of its men served as camp guard in Camp Erika and Hollandscheveld. After the war these men - Erik Pattist, Dirk Hoogendam, Herbertus Bikker and Toon Soetebier - escaped either to Spain and Germany. Learn more about the forgotten stories of WW2 in the Netherlands.

Thank you so much for this amazing channel. In The U.S., the extent of our education of the Dutch experience in WWII is being quickly (it actually wasn't quick at all) overrun by the Nazis and the collapse of the Dutch in the far east. Obviously, none of this comes close to giving the full, rich picture of the Dutch in all theatres of the war. A channel like this really deserves a million subscribers. I'd just like to make one suggestion - I know you made a brief reference to the Dutch Famine of 1944-45 in an earlier video, but I think that chapter deserves a deeper dive video. I imagine the vast majority of people outside of the Netherlands has no idea that terrible famine killed tens of thousands in a Western European nation in the 20th century, and may have contributed to the actress Audrey Hepburn's lifelong health problems.

I'm one of the non-vast minority who does know. My parents had a book about an Australian airman who "food-bombed" the Netherlands. There were people on the ground waving at his plane, so he also threw out a piece of paper with his name and address on it. A Dutch girl found it and they ended up write to each other. They eventually met something like fifty years later. The book is called, "The Flying Grocer".

Greetings from here in the UK. My father served with the free Dutch forces based in England during WW2 in the Princess Irene Brigade. My father was born in London and my grandparents were Dutch immigrants to the USA and lived in Detroit in Michigan. When Germany invaded Holland my father went to Canada to enlist in the free Dutch forces and was sent to Willenhall near Wolverhampton in England and became a mechanised driver with the Princess Irene Brigade were they were based. My father went to Normandy in the 3rd wave after D Day with the regiment along with Canadian forces and fought through Europe to liberate Holland. The Princess Irene Brigade was the first Dutch unit in. My father remained with the Brigade after WW2 and was posted back to England and ended his service in London in 1953 and settled in Lytham St Anne's in Lancashire with my mother and my elder brother. My mother served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force in WW2 and she married my father in 1942 in Wolverhampton. There is a cemetery in Wolverhampton which has many soldiers of the Princess Irene Brigade buried there and every year on 10th November a full military remembrance service is held there with representatives of the regiment coming over from Holland present as well as members of the Royal Air Force and British Army. I went to one of the remembrance parades in 2016 and my father's commanding officer from the Princess Irene Brigade was present. I have a photo of myself with two officers from the present day Brigade which is now a guards regiment in the Royal Netherlands Army. I am former Royal Air Force but also served in the Royal Navy and British Army. Thank you for posting this very interesting video and I have subscribed to your channel.

The area known most by locals is "De bommen koeter" which is local dialect for " de bommen kuilen" which were formed through extensive bombing of the Hasselt train station by the alies.

Again a great video! Holland is almost never mentioned in Hollywood movies about WW2,and its role in WW2 is similarly overlooked here in the U.S. (and I expect elsewhere) generally. I'm also a collector of military miniatures ("toy soldiers") and I can assure you that the Dutch army in WW2 is simply NOT available from any company as far as I know; it's as if they never existed (and this despite the fact that the toy soldier business is currently enjoying an explosive boom period globally). Its far and few that history channels show not only the allied axis and resistance but als the history on the darker pages of a nation. As sadly ever nation does have collaborators but its never talked about. no history can be complete if not all events and roles and sides are reviewed . A verry well done series and objective view. @@HistoryHustle Its more the political side of the dutch defenses of dutch east indies. Also between de admirals and generals of different nations of abda having their own views. Iam personaly some one that likes to read up on all aspects to get total picture political. , industrial , thechnological inovations . arms industry etc etc. And i can say something interesting is going on in the 1910s between the dutch german goverments shipyards and companys. something that could and would have consequences for imperial germany if war didnt start in 1914. and weimar republic/3rd reich rearmaments. and Dutch reamament plans.

Another Dutch unit that fought the Western Allies was SS-Wachbataillon 'Nordwest'. Just like Landstorm, the requirements were very low, and the men had barely any discipline / motivation to fight. Their first, and in some ways their last, fight was during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The men had to fight against the elite British paratroopers, they didn't stand a chance. While some kept on fighting, most fled from the battlefield with the fact they didn't want to fight against the Western Allies, others were captured. Only ⅓ remained of Nordwest after Market Garden.

As you say the quality of the Landstorm varied. Elements of the Landstorm are reported as fighting the Canadians in March/April 1945 and a some even held out for a few days after the war ended

Some people may be wondering why the German invasion of the Netherlands wasn’t added to the list of war crimes during the Nuremberg Trials? Because the Germans simply weren’t the first to violate Dutch Neutrality. The Venlo Incident of November 1939, in which British Intelligence officers were captured by members of the Nazi Sicherheitsdienst, could be argued as one such violation (although there are military missions in all neutral countries whose job is to gather intelligence against the enemy as standard operating procedures). The indisputable violation of Dutch neutrality occurred when armed bombers of the RAF flew directly over Dutch territory to carry out missions over Germany. Many were propaganda missions, but neither the Germans nor the Dutch were given any details as to what the aircraft were actually carrying. Many missions were reconnaissance, an undeniable act of war at any rate. Then, in March 1940, the RAF launched a full fledged bombing mission on German territory, with their aircraft again violating Dutch airspace. The Dutch government protested of course, but clearly did not satisfy the Germans. The expectation was that Germany would likely violate Dutch airspace in kind. They of course took it to another level when they invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, but in this instance at least, it did not constitute a war crime.

Before, the RAF only attacked Nazi ports such as Wilhelmshaven, Cuxhaven, Heligoland ... not flying over The Netherlands... The biggest crime of war ... is the starting of it. And Nazi-Germany started the war against neutral & peacefull countries such as The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Luxemburg, Yuogaslavia, Greece, Czechoslowakia ... always with an excuse (Heute Morgen haben wir zurück geschossen") , apparently still believed by people like you ... ps: ever heard about the "Vucht Incident"? A Luftwaffe Messchesmidt plane crashed in Belgium (yep, another neutral country) on January 10th 1940. The Nazi-soldiers inside had detailled plans about an invasion in Belgium and The Netherlands. They tried to destroy them, in vain ... Neutrality? Not really a German word...

@@KR-jt4ut you really don’t know your history do you? Dutch airspace was repeatedly violated by the RAF in order to conduct both reconnaissance and propaganda missions prior to May 10 1940. The RAF started dropping bombs on March 19th of that year. Bombs or not, the airspace was violated by the Allies first, meaning no war crime was committed when the Germans responded in kind ...including a ground invasion. Prior to that there was the Venlo incident. As a declared neutral nation, it was the responsibility of the Dutch security forces NOT to allow either warring nation to allow intelligence operations to be conducted from their soil. Least of all to cooperate with those foreign agencies. When Nazi agents lured the British agents to the Dutch border and captured them, it proved the Dutch were not adhering to their own stated position of neutrality. Since British agents were already on Dutch soil, German agents capturing them was not unlike capturing an enemy soldier on neutral territory that had already been violated. Do you understand now? Hi history hustle great video as always could you review ww2 movies and give your opinion on what is accurate and what isn't. I watched 1917 the movie and a couple of things weren't accurate which most people had overlooked such as northern France having waterfalls and stormy rivers and the scene were the protagonist suddenly came across a British unit listening to a song when in reality such a thing would be impossible because they would have guards on duty everywhere. Very interesting, my grandfather was an NSBer then joined the WSS who moved to Germany after the wars end and then to South Africa. :D I was 5 years in the SADF in the 1980s upto to 1992 (South African Army Inteligence). @@HistoryHustle He was a member of the NSB WA, my grandmother saw the NSB as being a Dutch patriotic movement, he was not pro monarchy, My fathers parents both believed in the idea of the Greater Netherlands, a union with Flanders not with Germany. They were from Eindhoven, Northern Brabant, the Catholic South of the Netherlands & after the war they moved to Aachen over the German border. He was not pro or anti-Jewish, he said some Jews were ok, others were not. He said he often felt sorry for how the Dutch people were treated by the Germans as a Dutchman he wanted the Germans to go home. My feeling is he was swept along with things and felt powerless as he still supported the ideals of the NSB, but less so the German Nazis and had said he hoped that after the German victory things would return to normal and the Germans would start to leave the Netherlands and return home , but he said that even with a German Victory, the Dutch people would not have easily forgiven the NSB for its role in supporting the German occupation. The only problems he said he had with Anton Mussert was he felt he allowed himself to be too much a puppet of Hitler, and he was married to his own Aunt. :D His time with the W-SS. He often said they did as they were ordered, but would turn a blind eye to small transgressions when they could, but he also said things were far worse in the North of the Netherlands durring the German occupation for Dutch people and said many Dutch children starved and he felt regret that he could not have done more to protect them and how this was totally against the ideas of the NSB. What was once a movement of Patriots became little more than a movement of German collaborators. :( I would say very few NSB members wanted to become traitors who worked for the Germans rather than the good of the Dutch people, it just ended up that way. He liked the Germans as Germanic brothers & friends, but didnt want them as masters!!!

I don't know where you found that members of the 'Landstorm Nederland' served as guards in Kamp Erika in Ommen, but this wasn't the case; I'm sorry. The other way around is more likely; men that served as guards in the Kontroll Kommando in Ommen, went on to serve in the SS-Wachbataillon 'Nordwest' (or later, the SS-Wachbataillon 3). The remnants of the Wachbatallion would become part of the 'Landstorm Nederland' during the later stages of the war, and performed terribly (for example at Arnhem) from a military standpoint. By this time, Kamp Erika was under the control of the Ordnungspolizei. Bikker was a member of the original Kontroll Kommando and later of the Wachgruppe Ommen. It was in this capacity that he 'earned' his nickname. His military career in the Waffen SS was short-lived (there are clues that he made it up) and was way before his time as a guard in Ommen. His case isn't probably the best example, but it shows how former Waffen SS men ended up in the repressive camp-system, but also how former camp-guards ended up as front line soldiers in the Waffen SS. It is true that members of 'Landstorm Nederland' served as an ad-hoc 'police unit', 'fighting' the resistance behind the front line. This late war drama took place in the northern provinces. It kinda depends on how you look at it. Does "fighting for" equals the Dutch were all in favor of? I don't think so. If you compare the Dutch Waffen-SS volunteers (25,000) with the Princess Irene Brigade (1200 - 3500) then you're right. What about the Dutch soldiers that were moblized in May 1940 and saw action against the Germans? I'm aware some of these later joined the Waffen-SS. What about the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (BS), Ordedienst (OD), Landelijke Knokploegen (LKP) and Raad van Verzet in het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (RVV)?

It’s known as the Fuhrer-erlas if I’m correct. In 1943 hitler signed a law that men who fought for the German army they could apply for German citizenship (or which they would automatically receive for their service) I don’t know if this only extends for the Germanic volunteers, or for all volunteers.

You forgot to mention II./SS.Rgt. Landstorm Nederland and was first deployed at Woensdrecht area under 719.ID, then south towards Antwerp and eastward. I./SS.Rgt.Landstorm was deployed south of Beringen(BE) area under 85.ID. and against Beringen itself later on. III./SS.Rgt.Landstorm was deployed at the Arnhem area under 9.SS.Hohenstaufen.Div. Some of Landstorm volunteered for MEK40, the German equivalent of the British Royal Marines Commandos. The first deployment of MEK40'Golla' in the night of 24 to 25th of Nov.1944 on Colijnsplaat turned into a debacle. Their Commander Cpt.Golla was KIA and Lt.I.Havelaar of the Prinses Irene Brigade too. Almost the entire German unit was taken prisoner. Later MEK40 in the Scheldt delta were however very successful. My Granddad belonged to the Orde Dienst-Tholen that became part of 9.Coy.Netherlands Interior Forces, Commando Brabant who had to face raids of them for 130 days. The pillbox complex next to theirs was raided at Stavenisse on March 5 1945. Al but 2 managed not to be captured, but one of the captured either died of wounds later on, or was executed. The other one was sent to a concentration camp at Hamburg, but was liberated 2 months later when the war ended. 2 or 4 former Dutch SS men Landstorm were KIA during the German MEK40 raid at the St. Philipsland Peninsula against 245.Bty.,RA. , 10.Coy./Netherl.Int.Forces,Cdo. Brabant en units of 1.Polish.Arm.Div. on 22 Jan. 1945. And 6 German Marines, 2 British (ao. the CO), 2 Poles (ao. the CO), 1 Dutch Storm trooper and one civilian too. 2 British and 1 Dutch Storm trooper were captured. The German report mentioned another POW, but Allied reports only mention 3. The location of graves of the found German Commandos (incl. the former SS men) are unknown. ( The bloke "standing guard" holding the strap of his rifle with his right hand, wearing gloves. Having a "Wolfhaken" on his collar.) The man lost his life at Arnhem.

On one hand, I admire the Dutch people that wanted a united Europe, on the other hand I despise a lot of them for their blatant crimes against humanity. My grandfather moved to Germany since his dad became a truck driver there. He had a really rough time when he had to walk back to the Netherlands with his mother and brother after they were "liberated". His father died in Germany due to a crash. He ended up in camp Westerbork with his mom and brother. when he was old we went there with the family, and he cried. I couldn't understand why since why would he be there during the war? We weren't Jews? Years later I found out he was there because he was considered a traitor. In the end Nazi Germany was horrible, but my great grandfather did what he thought was best for his family at the time. My grandfather later joined the Dutch navy, I think partially out of guilt and also because people knew his family were traitors. I know there where a lot of issues when he married my grandfather. In hindsight probably because his family had a reputation. I'm thankful that I never lived during those times, he must have had a tough time growing up and raising his family. My father found out years later, he never knew anything about this. He doesn't know I know and he is deeply ashamed that his father used to be a Nazi (Hitlerjugend).

Hitler recruited based on their atrocities perpetuated in Birkenau, will try to abduct him in Belgium to have him tortured to death. To be able to do so his driver was poisoned and he will pass away in my arms in Mechelen were I lived at that time ( I was about 2.5 years old and still wearing diapers) . Prince Bernhard drove himself into safety while avoiding the check points set up to catch him, with the deceased driver in the boot of his car.

In fact hundreds of thousands of people with mixed Polish and German roots were forcefully conscripted into the Wehrmacht. Many defected to the Western allies after capture. Especially in the territories that belonged to the Russian and the Austro-Hungarian empire before 1917/18 ethnicities werent that clear cut and separated like in western europe. German names were all over the place among high ranking Polish military personnel in WW2 and the other way arround.

Not all, the popularity of the royals was and is great. Although a lot of SS’er were probably done with the monarchy after they fled to the UK in 1940. Biggest reason to join the Westland or Dutch voluntary legion was anti communism and/or believe in the national socialist cause.
