The Dutch West India Company (WIC) - The History of Slave Trade during the Dutch Golden Age

The Dutch West India Company (WIC) was important in Dutch history. The WIC transported many African slaves across the Atlantic Ocean in the so-called transatlantic slave trade. In the history of the Netherlands the Golden Age is a vital time for the rise of the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. The Dutch Golden Age (Gouden Eeuw) commensed when the Dutch provinces led by Holland were revolting against Spain in the so-called Dutch Revolt. In the Dutch history this revolt is also know as the Eighty Years' War (Tachtigjarige Oorlog) and took place in the Low Countries. In 1588 the Dutch Republic (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden) was established.
In 1602 the Dutch East India Company (VOC - Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) was set up. In 1621 the Dutch West India Company (WIC - West-Indische Compagnie) was established and brought great wealth to the Dutch Republic. Yet, many people suffered. The WIC ran several colonies: New Netherlands (with capital city of New Amsterdam), the Dutch Caribbean (Dutch Antilles) and Dutch Brazil.

The Dutch and the British West and East Indias Companies were who truelly transformed slavery into a mega industry and yet, there are still people who elogiate them for the money they made and at the same time criticize other countries who never achieved their gigantic numbers of traffic! This has to end, each one must assume its own responsability, or they will pass the guilt, racism and lies to the next generations...

Piet Hein's capture of the treasure/silver fleet also made the Dutch start an offensive towards the south. It basically established Dutch control over the regions now known as North Brabant and Zealandic Flanders, as well as a great number of exclaves in the area around Maastricht. Because nearly all inhabitants were Catholic due to the war, they never got any regional autonomy and the churches were taken. These are interesting things about history with globalization, and how one short event on the other side of the world has so much effect on the history of an area on the other side of the world.

In Brazil, this company is known for two things: The construction of infrastructure in what is now known as the northeast, mainly in Recife, capital of the new Netherlands. And also for the slave trade, when they invaded the city of Luanda in Angola to be able to bring slaves to the new Netherlands (Brazil).

spent a year in Recife Olinda in 2015 and i read the local pernambuco history books.. and they were facinating..the history revolves around the sugar plantations and the jewish money lenders, ( hundreds of historic references to Masonic involvement in politics and business) ,, plus the whole amazing history of Palmares,, a city in the thick forest hills made by tens of thousands of african people who had escaped plantations and organized themselves.. they traded with the native tribes by then only living in the interior.. like arco verde ,, where they still use an ayahuasca like DMT plant called Jurema. Then there werre the cangeceiros ,, wild cowboys gangss who roamed the dry lands.. called SERTAO ,, the most famous of them is Lampiao .. and his wife Maria bello.. .. hollywood does not know what its missing.. the history here is insane.. just pernambuco alone.. which was created by the dutch.. Recife built by Marucio de Nassau.. and then all this chaos happened because the french and portuguese started competing for the region.. which allowed the enslaved people,, and the natives and crazy cowbosys to let loose.. and live free for about a hundred years until the portuguese won out and order was estabilished.. ,, another amazing town.. centuries later.. is Canudos.. not in pernambuco.. but a socialist soiecity.. utiopian and successful.. until they printed their own currency and then the army went up and wiped them out.. eventually.. after all out guerillawar fare .. .. crazy....success story that exzemplifies the power of alt currencies.

According to native Americans Dutch intercepted their trade by selling them liquir which influenced "way of life." Which refers to their spiritual traditions. Great video btw. Once I found out there was a wealthy merchant Dutch trader with the name of Samuel Blommaert who became one of the directors of the WIC. Do you know anything about that?

Don't know how it is today, but I never learned this in Dutch school. I was amazed when I first read about this. I get that secondary schools can't cover everything, but this is a pretty sad omission. What I didn't know until I read your comment is that this heritage is still celebrated in Recife. I will have to go there some day.

I mean its not celebrated as a popular party or something, but every history teacher i had, said that it was the best age of the northeast of brazil, which nowadays is of the pourest parts in our Country. Maurício de nassau built a sewer system , and observatorium, improved the water system, declarated freedom of religion and so many other things I think he stayed as the representative of the WIC from 1644-1654 and he was removed from the charge due to some internal crisis with the company and i due to some financerial crisis from the 30 years war and due to the governament from Oliver Cromwell who dissalowed foreign boats to merchandise in england ( and the dutchs were good sailors and had a huge profit in trading) Well, good to talk to u Piece 👍

But dont get me wrong, the brazilian northeast is definitely one of the most beautiful placês in the world. I suggest you seach for João Pessoa, the capital city of Paraiba( brazilian state) and Fernando de Noronha (Brazilian caribe, literaly) and so many others

You'll likely find simply using "(the) enslaved (people)" rather than "slave-made-people" easier to say and appropriate to communicate understanding of the horror of that crime and holocaust 👍Our convenience in a case like this does not serve us in the end Maintaining vigilance in or clarity of thought would go a long way to keeping us from repeating acts & periods of horrendous inhumanity

That is actually a very good question I haven't thought of. I think there was not one capital of the Dutch West Indies. Because I believe the trade was different. The VOC traded mostly spices that came from all over the East Indies (even products from China and Japan) that it needed a central hub which became Batavia (now Jakarta). As for the West Indies it did a lot of slave trading that had its base on Curaçao with its main city of Willemstad. It is very interesting to dive into the different styles of colonization carried out by the VOC and WIC and comparing them. It requires me further reading and thinking. If I have some more concrete anwers I'll get back to this question. Thanks for posting!

As far as I know, the only population of then Dutch East Indies being shipped to outside of what is today Indonesia were only islanders from Rote Island to Madagascar. Correct me if I'm wrong. Edit: I only found this out, Rote to Madagascar because I found out about Valiha. Madagascar musical instrument that is strikingly similar to East Nusa Tenggara's Sasando, without the resonance box.
