In a recent video I used AI to recreate Kermit the Frog’s original voice from 1955 in HD. Something quite a few people wanted to see was the technology used on another of Henson’s works from the same time period - being the earliest Muppet commercials for Wilkins Coffee...

This was a very interesting video to watch. I think using AI in this restorative way is perhaps one of the BEST uses that people can use it for. I also actually didn’t know that Kermit existed at the same time as Wilkins did, so that was pretty fun to learn about as well!

I get that people are freaking out over AI (I'm an artist myself and I do have concerns) but honestly Jim himself would probably at least tinker with it himself if he were here. It would just be another tool in the toolbox to him really, which is how it should be (although realistically I don't quite see that happening)

New technology will always be both scary and interesting. And sure, it might have worse applications down the line the line, but that does not mean the technology is inherently wrong. "Restorations" like this, are a good means to make people realize the technology exists and make them think and talk about it.

The Sam and Friends footage is from kinescope, a TV screen recorded with film, while most Wilkins ads were shot straight to film. If you do attempt this again, you should try the Wilkins ads done to kinescope

I tried using the software to hear how Frank Sinatra sounded in his prime. It both worked, and didn't work. The music messed up the audio file hardcore, but the voice still stuck out somewhat.
