I gave up on chasing sd/es. If I put 5 shots into the same hole at 100 yards I'll take that anyday over sd/es in the single digits. My best groups are with high sd/es. Go figure.

That's all fine and good. But when you start shooting further and further it starts making a big difference. I don't deem a load good before my 10rd sample is below 15 ES.

As long as you are only shooting to say 300, this may hold up. But as you start reaching out to 1000, ES will start making a difference in verticals distribution.

I ran a test once on my 300 Win Mag along the same lines... I loaded 40 rounds, 10 in each group... Unbrushed, no lube. Unbrushed with lube. Brushed, no lube. Brushed, with lube. The lube was simply Hornady Unique applied to the bearing surface of the projectiles. I remember seeing a difference in ES/SD... But I don't remember if group size was significantly impacted. Unfortunately, I lost my notes on the test and can't recall which prep regimen yielded the best results. Getting ready to load some more ammo. May have to repeat the test.

Just for science I gave this a try on a cheap 308 reload altough I used a little drop of silicon oil on a Q-tip instead of that graphite suspension which is totally unobtainable in this part of the world. Seating felt extremely consistent and chronograph results were stunning, that particular load went from SD 12 and ES 46 on 10 rounds down to SD 7 and ES 23, still on 10 rounds. I'll probably ditch the silicon oil for the next batch because I don't know what may happen in the barrel on the long run, but at least I'm sold on the idea of lubing the inside of the necks prior to bullet seating.

Dude I have watched some your videos, and what I will say: nice tests and reviews BUT you need good accurate rifle where we will see better RESULTS and differences. Watch @Brian Zolnikov, and u will see the differences in results. With crappy $500 walmart rifle you are wasting yours and our time & components. No matter what kind of lube/neck tension/seating force you are testing, you groups still 1 moa. Hope this make sense.

Looks great, but not sure why the Redding Imperial dry lube in media wouldn’t do the same thing. (?) I already dunk the neck in that before running a mandrel before bullet seating, so know there’s still a residue inside the case neck. Numbers don’t lie, so I’m sure you’re onto something, but the dry lube might offer the same benefit. P.S. I see this was addressed further down in the comments. I’ll have to consider how adding the neolube to the dry media inside the necks will work in practice, but it sounds promising.

@@therangersbulldogs6350 Thanks for the fast response. Are there any sites you can link with this info? Barrel life is a finnicky thing to predict are there sites/forums with empirical evidence showing longer barrel life? There's often graphite in smokeless powder. So at what amount is the abrasion higher than the base powder? The humidity has been much higher than usual this year for me. I'd love to see some side by side tests. Which would be better for abrasion to put the product on the interior of the case neck or on the outside of the bullet? Which results in more consistent seating pressure and release?

@DracoOmnia
@DracoOmnia Жыл бұрын
Graphite is a dry lubricant, putting it in a suspension of alcohol allows you to apply a very thin, reasonably consistent layer of the graphite across the intended surface and alcohol evaporates pretty quickly at room temperatures (also called flashing off).
@clays7741
@clays7741 Жыл бұрын
@@DracoOmnia You answered the operation of it. Thank you. But why does this work? Why is graphite in the neck helpful? It seems it would be similar to using a larger mandrel and decreasing neck tension.
@DracoOmnia
@DracoOmnia Жыл бұрын
@@clays7741 ah, it reduces the amount of force you need to insert the projectile, the current groupthink is that the less pressure you can consistently get to (key caveat, whilst maintaining neck tension) the better for accuracy. If you watch the video he references in this one he's got a load sensor in his press and measures the the pressure it takes for various neck lube versions and this stuff provided the most consistent spread on a graph, with the least pressure spike.

@clays7741 Жыл бұрын

@mab0852
@mab0852 Жыл бұрын
@@clays7741 It would also reduce the potential for neck weld. As a bullet sits gripped in the case the brass and copper bond over time which creates another variable in the release pressure of the bullet. That's one reason F-class guys seat long for transport and then seat to length the night before the match. It breaks any weld, resets the baseline release pressure, and they know seating depth didn't get knocked out while travelling.
